1996 Mustang Information & Specifications

1996 Mustang Overview:

Ford gave the engine compartment of the Mustang a full overhaul between the 1995 and 1996 model years by replacing the legendary 302cid Windsor with a new 2V 4.6L SOHC V8 modular engine. Though the engine had a smaller displacement, it was still capable of producing the exact same 215 horsepower and 285ft/lbs of torque of the old 5.0L. The V6 retained the now-standard 3.8L Essex V6. The Cobra also began using a modular engine in the form of a 4.6L DOHC V8. Along with the vast power train makeovers, the exterior received a few minor changes including the addition of vertical tri-bar taillights as an homage to first generation Mustangs. Despite the changes and the loss of the long-running Windsor engine, we here at Stage 3 Motorsports provide very easy ways to add massive horsepower gains with aftermarket performance parts without the need for forced-induction systems.

The first bolt-on enhancements that most of our customers go for involve the intake system. A functional cold air intake adds about 10 horsepower onto the Mustang's engine in a fairly simple installation. Most CAI systems for SN95s are routed into the fender well to provide the coolest air possible to the Mustang's engine to deliver more power. Even more power can be gained from further optimizing engine airflow with an aftermarket throttle body. Performance throttle bodies are usually larger than stock and allow larger amounts of charge air into the intake manifold. Mustang throttle bodies can produce gains of up to 10hp to 12hp depending on its size and design. More horsepower can be added through the use of underdrive pulleys. Underdrive pulleys are smaller and lighter than the cast iron factory pulleys and give the Mustang's engine back 10 horsepower by slowing down the speeds of belt-driven accessories which lowers overall drag on the belt itself.

1996 Mustang aftermarket exhaust upgrades:

A whopping 30 to 50 horsepower can be found by freeing up your SN95's exhaust system from the massive amount of back pressure present in its stock configuration along with a huge improvement in exhaust tone. Starting on the Mustang's aft section, Stage 3's cat-back exhausts provide your Mustang with a loud, classic sound at fairly low prices. Cat-backs replace all of the exhaust parts aft of the catalytic converters and feature either uniquely designed mufflers or muffler deletes that give impressive sound gains. Mandrel-bent kickovers and new tips eliminate a small amount of back pressure and can give meager horsepower and torque gains. Increases of 10 to 20 horsepower can be found by replacing the inefficient factory mid-pipe with an aftermarket h-pipe or x-pipe. New mid-pipes have a variety of different designs, but can give the 4.6L V8 a varying amount of horsepower depending on whether or not the mid-pipe has high-flow catalytic converters or catalysts deletes for better exhaust flow. The stock exhaust manifold generates a lot of back pressure, but can be substituted with a pair of shorty headers or complete long tube headers. Short tube ''shorty'' headers are direct replacements for the stock manifolds and can reuse the factory mid-pipe. Shorty headers have more efficient tubing and can add up to ten extra horsepower and torque. Long tube headers can boost total engine output by 30 horsepower and have massive tubing that runs underneath the Mustang to a shorty mid-pipe that eliminates back pressure and improves exhaust scavenging. Please note that some mid-pipes and headers may not meet emissions requirements in your area. Check your local emissions guidelines before ordering.

1996 Mustang exterior upgrades:

Many SN95s suffer from exterior accessories that may not be in the greatest shape, but we here at Stage 3 Motorsports carry the components you need to get your 1996 Mustang back to a tip-top appearance. One of the most common replacement items are the Mustang's headlights and taillights. Headlights, in particular, are a popular item and an aftermarket set chock full of the latest in automotive lighting technologies are available, along with OE-like designs. Some of our headlights feature projector lenses that can be used with most HID kits and come standard with LEDs and integrated CCFL halos. Often, the wheels of the older-generation Mustangs have begun to fade a bit, but our wide selection of wheels from OE Wheels and Wheel Replicas can provide you with a solution. Our wheels feature traditional five-spoke designs or extremely unique styles that can fit any exterior theme. Along with wheels, a set of Nitto NT555 tires allows your Mustang to be a contender on the street, track or drag strip. The NT555 gives the SN95 excellent handling and traction without generating overly-large levels of noise, vibration or harshness. Contact Stage 3 Motorsports for the latest tire pricing and size availability.
