Powerful Sound in a Simple Kit

No one knows audios systems like Kicker, and when it comes time to make your 2009 to 2014 F150 Super Crew blast your tunes, they have one of the best systems on the market. Meet the Kicker VSS (Vehicle Specific Solution) SubStage powered subwoofer kit. This complete system is designed for trucks that missed out on the Sony HD Audio upgrade package from the factory and need a bigger bass boom at a lower price and without any other gimmicks. The VSS SubStage kit even uses the wiring meant for the Sony kit and requires only minor splicing.

Complete System with Enclosure

The kit comes complete with a 10" subwoofer (2" larger than the Sony HD kit) that's powered by a 200-watt amplifier that's all integrated into a single enclosure that fits right under your Super Crew's rear seats. The amp and subwoofer easily wire into your truck's audio system and bolt into place using the holes that would usually be used for the optional Sony subwoofer. The kit can be installed minimal amounts of wiring, making for a clean and classy kit that has a near-OE look. Each system comes with installation hardware, connectors, and installation instructions.

Fitment this kit will only fit Super Crew models and is not compatible with the Sony HD Audio System on 2009 to 2010 F150s. If you're installing this kit on a 2011 to 2014 F150, the Sony 8" subwoofer will need to be removed. A version for Super Cabs is also available.

2014 FX4 with Sony HD & Nav
This piece works fantastic! I have a 2014 FX4 Supercrew with the 402A pkg. I have the Sony HD system that has the Sony "700W" subwoofer under the small section of the back seat. This replaces the stock Sony sub and man does it make a HUGE difference! Install took me about 2 hours taking my time and actually rereading and following the directions hahaha. The most difficult part of the whole install for me was getting the power wire through the firewall grommet, the rest is very straight forward. You just have to tap into the right front door speaker wires with the supplied wire taps (no cutting or splicing required). The right front speaker wires are easy to find and are under the right front kick panel near the bottom (right next to where your right foot would be if you were in the front passenger seat). You don't use any of the wires that go to the stock Sony sub. Just tuck them under the carpet through the factory hole and run the supplied harness back out the same hole in the carpet. Everything else is literally plug and play. Its really easy and everything you need is supplied in the kit. If you have the all weather floor mat like I do, you will have to trim it a little otherwise the driver will hit it. Just trace around the edge of the enclosure with a sharpie and cut the mat with a pair of heavy duty scissors. The mat is soft and cuts very easily. As for the sound, I set the Bass at minus 4 and it still shakes the rearview mirror and doesn't distort at high volume levels. Set like this you also wont hear the volume pull back at loud volume levels like it does with the factory sub(the Sony DSP pulls back the bass when you turn it up to protect the speakers). By the way, the pictures that show this as being rectangular in shape are NOT this piece...that's the one for the supercab.

2013, F150
First off you need to know that I never write reviews on products. However, in this case I felt that I needed too. Stage 3 was great with the questions that I had concerning the purchase of this SoundGate. As always they answered all my questions and I did not think I was getting a sales pitch from a used car salesman. I have a 2013 F150 with the Sony HD stereo. After much research I decided to purchase the SubStage Powered Subwoofer kit for my Super Crew. So, I kept the Sony head unit and Sony speakers in the doors. I figured if it sounded bad that I would upgrade down the road. No need b/c it sounds great. My end state was to have a deep rich bass sound that was significantly better than the Sony sub. YES, I got it… the Kicker SoundGate delivers and I would recommend it to anyone that is asking. To put this into perspective for your; with the Sony sub I had the bass level at +4 with the Kicker sub I have the bass level at -1 and it still hits harder than the Sony. Great purchase! I have not installed a stereo in my vehicles in over 15 years. The instructions were easy to follow and I completed the install in one hour and fifteen minutes. The most difficult part was running the power supply through the rubber grommet from the engine to the passenger floorboard. Everything else was very simple…. just read the instructions. The only complaint that I have is that I wish the directions had color photos. Lastly, I have a rubber floor mat in the rear cabin. You will need to cut around the Kicker sub to ensure the floor mat lays flat. Hope this helps answer any questions about the SoundGate with a Sony HD unit in a 2013 F150.

Great Sub for my 2012 Ecoboost F-150
This sub fits perfectly out of sight under the back seat. The install was pretty easy - everything you need is included in the package - no adding wires or making any modifications. The bass really adds some oomph to the sound of the truck as the music plays. I also added Kicker door speakers as well and now my truck turns heads as I roll around with the windows down - nothing that I could have done with the factory speakers. Great addition to the enhancement of my truck.

2013 F150 5.0 with sony system
Pics aren't 100% right. It is just a little larger than the stock sony. Fits on same side in place. Stage 3 is awesome and this sub probably hits at least twice as hard as the stock. Totally worth the money if you are trying to stay as stock as possible.

The truck came with the upgraded sony sound system with a sony subwoofer . My jeep wrangler unlimited sounded better. I installed the kicker sub and there was a big improvement. But when I installed the kicker door speakers with it. Wow it rocks. You have to buy the door speakers with the subwoofer . It will be the best two bucks you spend.

The absolute best sound upgrade for my truck. My truck came with the Sony upgrade and when I compared it to my Wife's acadia I was completely frustrated with Ford for their lack of effort in making a good audio system even with the Sony name. Great truck, bad audio. I did the kicker door speaker up grade first and it did fairly well relative to the stock Sony speakers, but the low end still needed help. This SubStage system did wonders. I used to have to turn the bass all the way up to get it to sound okay but now I have the bass at -2 on a normal basis and +3 when I really want to turn up the music. Overall, after the $200 for the door speakers and $700 for the sub, I am well pleased.

I had the sony 700watt system prior to installing the substage which was very simple todo. The sound was way more than I expected. I also changed out the door speakers with the kicker ks68 and the pairing is unbelievable. Very satisfied with the price being a plug and play. Super fast shipment.

Although advertised as "in stock " my product didn't ship until a full week later not 24 to 48 hours after I ordered it at the beginning of the week. The product itself is awesome and hands down way better than stock and worth every penny. Although I don't agree with the questionable advertising they use ,overall I am happy with my purchase from stage 3.

Sooo much better than the 700w Sony. Bought the Door Speakers also. SOunds Great. Sub install was easy except Step 15, 16, 17. My wires were not located as the picture shows. That wire bundle on my truck is actually behind the fuse panel toward the firewall. I had to access the wires at the junction of the passenger kick panel and passenger step plate as they head toward the rear Supercrew cab door speaker. Impossible to get to the wire bundle as shown. The Rubber grommet is not easy, it is double sided. I just went around it using some plastic wire insulation to protect the wire. The Door skin removal you tube video made the door speaker install a piece of cake.

Don't let none of the negative reviews persuade you. If you have the Sony Nav system, this subwoofer and kicker speakers are a worthwhile investment. Great sound! Easy to install.

If you're expecting the overkill rattle that would be equivalent of 2-10" in a custom box, you're in the wrong place.... but this factory replacement is a fantastic option if you want good bass to fill the inside of the cab. Even turned to -2 or -1, it rattles the rear view mirror. Good quality lows, and sounds good even on Sirius bandwidth (even though you may have to turn it up on the head unit to 0 or +1). I have seen this unit go for less elsewhere about a year or two ago, but I'd gladly pay the current MSRP price for what you get. I filled the box with poly fill first, and it sounds great. Not sure what it sounds like without, of course, so my review was based on my particular outcome. Solid construction, great factory fit. Only "complaint" is that it takes up a bit of space under the 60 side of the back seat.... which means that gun cases no longer fit perfectly under it. Not a huge deal, but just something to consider. I think it sticks out maybe 3-4" more inches. Just enough to have to trim the factory rubber mat, as well. Easy to do with basic household scissors. Install was easy enough, did it myself with basic wiring knowledge. Pictures on the instructions are a little small, so get a magnifying glass or a microscope. Hardest part was feeding the power wire through the firewall grommet, as it is double-paned. Good luck, and enjoy! Customer service by both Lou and Rey R. was fantastic, they got me squared away with everything.

Instructions are garbage. Two days and still not installed. Find the wires that are? All other reviews speak of how easy this is. Finding the items described in the two pages of instructions incredibly difficult and referenced videos skip important steps in an effort to be brief.

The sub woofer makes a very big difference in the addition of base sound. I also have the Kicker door speakers and tweeters and the clarity of the whole system is much better than stock. For me though, I need more power. I need to feel the punch of John Bonham's drums, so I called Kicker to find out how to add additional power to the system. The guy there was very knowledgable but said I would need to add a number of other components, including replacing the sub woofer I just installed. The cost would easily be a couple of thousand dollars more and a wasted $700 (on this sub). The Kicker components are great, it's just the Sony 700w system is underpowered. It would be great if I could just add another power amp or a new power amp, but that's not the case without spending big bucks. The stock stereo in my 2008 Super Duty gave way more of a punch.

Well worth the money. I am impressed with the amount of punch this little unit packs. I am not one who likes to have the fillings rattled out of my head, so I keep the stock head unit bass level at around -2. Still, if you're having one of those days and need to be acoustically beaten, it will deliver. The install went relatively smoothly. For the wire splicing under the kick panel, look for the green adapter; this is where you'll find the two wires you need. The two wires in question connect to the front passenger door speaker. There will be additional length of the plug wire, but it tucks nicely under the carpet. I have Weathertech Floor Liners, so there was some custom adjustments to make in order to mount the sub to the frame. It's nothing major. Install took about an hour and a half with the adjustments, and the whole system, tweeters, 6x8s and this Substage make for an excellent listening experience in everything from classical to death metal.
