Ford Explorer Sport 2016
I was looking for a better sounding exhaust than the standard fit exhaust, and I am extremely happy with the Borla S-Type. At low RPM there is a low volume, low frequency drone, which is noticeable but subtle - enough to sound good when you start up, but not enough to annoy the neighbors when I am leaving for work in the morning. At mid RPM (3000 or so) the sound is wide and throaty - just awesome! Going up a hill sitting in a lower gear at this RPM is fun. Sounds like a V8, for sure. At high RPM (5000-6000), it sounds like a beast, but I'm not driving at that RPM except between gears, so it is a short-lived experience. There is definitely a 'sweet spot' sound for me in the mid-RPM range that is very satisfying, and makes this exhaust well worth the money. I had it professionally installed in under 2 hours, for $200. They told me that the install was straightforward being a cat-back system, but they had to cut the pipe after the catalytic convertor. The system fits with the existing exhaust tips, so there is no visual change. There are positive differences to power and fuel economy. I notice faster acceleration. I read somewhere that this system provides 10% more power, which would take the Explorer Sport from 365hp to 400hp. I don't know if that is true, but it does feel like it - putting my foot down I feel extra power and a roar. But the bigger impact is to fuel economy. I used to get 20-22mpg in an absolute best-case scenario on open freeway. Now I get 28mpg on the same road. I even managed to get 30mpg on a 40 mile stretch of LA freeway - amazing. In regular city driving I have not seen an difference in fuel economy. It appears to me that the reduced airflow resistance of the Borla S-type has the most impact on low RPM fuel economy when cruising. Super happy I made the switch to this exhaust. Best Explorer modification you can make!

Quality Catback
This was my first Borla system. This is my wifes daily driver. She has a professional job where she meets clients talks on her bluetooth etc. I was lookong for a system that would add an exhaust note which was subtle and elegant yet noticeable. Adding HP is definately a plus and reason #2. Lastly I wanted a quality system and didn't want to slap on a cheap system on a 40k car. This system fit the bill perfectly. I was very happy at how quick and smooth the install was (2hrs). One of the easiest exhaust I have ever assembled, everything seemed bent at correct angles etc. The quality is superb. The explorer had basically zero exhaust note, this system definitely wakes up the exhaust note. I concur with everything the previous reviewer posted (i.e. no drone at 2k rpm or less, and nice sound on startup, overall more aggressive) except to my ear it does not sound like a V8. It definitely has a hint of fart can ricer or whatever terminology you use, to be expected a bit with a turbo engine. With that being said I am still very impressed with it. One other thing after install the vehicle was noticeably slower (my wife was 1st to notice). Pulled the battery cable for a computer reset and relearn and it's much better now. I will be getting a tune soon to complement the exhaust and intake. MPG seems unchanged but she drives mainly city and has a heavy foot. Shipping from Stage 3 was lightening quick.

2016 explorer platinum
Easy install. Very good sound. Loud when you’re on it and want it to be. Quiet with no drone on the highway. Makes for a great all around performance exhaust.

Customer Question How does this differ from the 2015 unit? I'm curious as to what the differences are for each model year as both cars are the same.

Asked by: DC - 7/3/2020
Customer Answer The tailpipe exits are in different places on the 2015s vs 2016 Explorer Sports, which necessitated design changes. A version of this kit for 2012-2015 Explorer Sports is here.

Customer Question If this will not work on a 2017 Ford Explorer FWD 3.5L V6 with the sports package do I have any other options? Thank you

Asked by: Nauttika - 6/1/2018
Customer Answer This particular kit will not fit a naturally-aspirated Explorer at all. The only kit that potentially works on a FWD Explorer would be this Magnaflow System.

Customer Question I saw the answer to the last question, but the 2017 Sport is basically the same as the 2016 performance and design-wise. Would you recommend I wait or would this kit work for me?

Asked by: Justin Denman - 4/19/2017
Customer Answer Borla has confirmed fitment of this kit on the 2017 Explorers with a 3.5L EcoBoost V6. Our listing has been updated to reflect the change.
