While the 5.4L Triton V8 under the hood of our 2004 F150 4WD XLT Project Truck is still running strong with 170,000 miles on the clock, the vehicle it happened to be in is very tired. No where was that more evident than in the rear shocks. Now, that truck had it's 6" Pro Comp lift kit on when we first picked it up. We don't know how long it had been on there, but given that the Pro Comp ES9000s weren't doing much of anything but taking up space, we're guessing that kit was installed fairly early in its very long life. In any case, it was time for a change just to get back a decent street ride, so we stuck with Pro Comp and grabbed a set of their 2004 to 2008 Pro Runner Series Rear Shocks for 6" Lifted Applications. The Pro Runners are bit more heavy duty and durable than the baseline white-body ES9000s, so we were pretty pumped to get them installed and have our truck running clean and mean once again.

We brought our 2004 F150 along for the ride when we installed the Zone 4" Lift Kit on our 2005 F150 Project Truck hoping that the guys down at Dyno-Comp could find some time to squeeze it in for a little time on their lift. Luckily, they had a few minutes for us, and both Clay and Matt got our 2004 F150 up on the lift and ready to go.

The good news was that even with our trucks 35x12.50" Cooper Discoverer STTs, Clay was still able to reach both the bottom and top shock mounts without removing the wheels. He started by unbolting the current ES9000 from passenger side lower mount.

It did take a few whacks with a wrench to pop out the bolt due to both corrosion and mud buildup.

With the lower bolt removed, Clay removed the bolt for the upper mount and removed the shock from the truck.

Clay the removed the worn out ES9000 from the driver's side.

With both of the ES9000s removed, Clay started to install our new Pro Runners. However, the shock mounts on our truck had collapsed inward by a few millimeters, and Clay had to bend them back to their proper widths to fit on our new shocks.

Once he had all four mounts bent back into shape, Clay installed the new Pro Runner Shocks, starting with the upper mount on the driver's side.

Then he fit the bolt through the lower driver's side mount of the truck and the shock before tightening it down.

Clay then bolted in the passenger side shock and tightened down its mounting bolts.
