2006 Mustang GT Project Dark Horse

Back in 2009, Saleen unveiled their limited edition Dark Horse Mustang. Only 25 would be built with a price tag of over $90,000. Equipped with a 4.6L V8 stroked out to 302 cubic inches and topped off with Saleen's legendary Super Shaker supercharger system, the Dark Horse was capable of throwing down 620 horsepower and 600lb-ft of torque. To keep it on the road, the dark horse came fully-equipped with a Saleen suspension kit that included their awesome watts-link kit, springs, dampers, and other gear. The Dark Horse came decked out with a full suite of both exterior and interior styling upgrades to make it even more unique.

But it just wasn't meant to be. Only eight of the 25 Dark Horses planned were ever built, and the utter circus involving control of Saleen, Inc, its assets, and production rights, not to mention its revolving door of CEOs, meant that the rest of the Dark Horse and other specialty Saleen Mustang lines would never resurface or see the light of day at all.

That didn't quite sit right with us, so we decided to put together a one of a kind Saleen Dark Horse clone that was every bit as fun as the original Saleen Dark Horse, if maybe not as powerful. We started off with a black stock 2006 Mustang GT, and worked it up to look and almost feel like a Saleen Dark Horse Mustang. The car started off with a full exhaust upgrade courtesy of our neighbors over at Pacesetter Performance Exhaust that included long tube headers, H-pipe, and axle-back exhaust kit. The crown jewel of our Dark Horse Project was the first aftermarket Saleen Supershaker Supercharger kit that we promptly fitted with a smaller pulley and some aggressive custom tuning to bring it's flywheel horsepower to nearly 550hp.

Our Dark Horse Project was then decked with a whole host interior and exterior styling upgrades, some of which were genuine Saleen Dark Horse pieces that were meant for the aborted #9 Dark Horse Mustang. For handling, our Dark Horse was equipped with a full watt's link kit and a set of Eibach Pro-Kit lowering springs that also gave it an awesome new look on top of superior suspension performance.
