Tuning is the best performance upgrade for your 2011 to 2014 5.0L F150

The engine and powertrain management computers that Ford and just about every other manufacturer throw in their cars and trucks these days are advanced pieces of equipment that can adapt to a variety of climates, altitudes, and even the performance parts that you throw on you truck. The PCM in your 2011 to 2013 F150 5.0L is not any different and it really does take a custom PCM tune to get the most out of your F150's 5.0L Coyote V8 engine. Basic mods like cold air intakes and cat-back exhaust kits just don't really cut it anymore, and PCM tuning is your truck's best bet for making big power.

That being said, combining a few F150 performance parts with PCM tuning is going to get your truck the best results. Our "Phased" performance packages are a perfect example, and we have even have dyno results from testing our F150 Phase 1 and Phase 2 kits on our 2012 FX4 Project Truck. Our Phase 1 kit includes an aFe Stage 2 Cold Air Intake, aFe Cat-Back Exhaust Kit, and an SCT Livewire Tuner and Dash monitor with SCT's "canned" performance tunes. The Phase 1 kit added 18 horsepower and 8lb-ft of torque to our truck's crankshaft on low-grade 91 octane gasoline.

While the Phase 1 kit was decent, we needed to give our project truck some more kick, so we got our Phase 2 package installed as quick as we could. Our Phase 2 package comes with same intake and cat-back as our Phase 1 kit, but also comes with a 2011 to 2014 F150 5.0L BBK 85mm throttle body and a Livewire tuner that's pre-loaded with custom tunes from 5-Star Tuning. On our truck's dyno run with the Phase 2 kit, gained 31 horsepower and 19lb-ft of torque on low-grade 91 octane gas. While the BBK throttle body probably helped, 5-Star's custom tune did the grunt work and got our truck most of its gains, not to mention improved drivability thanks to alterations in the transmission software.
