The Interesting Dilemma of 2015+ Mustang 2.3L EcoBoost Tuning

Just like basically any factory turbocharged vehicle out there, the 2015-2023 Mustangs with the 2.3L EcoBoost can make massive gains in the torque department, but peak horsepower leaves a lot to be desired. The reason is heat soak, pure and simple, which we found out the hard way on our 2015 Mustang EcoBoost Project Car when we did a dyno run while using a COBB Tuning 91 Octane OTS Tune via a COBB Accessport V3 Tuner. Our car managed to pick up a pretty staggering 50lb-ft of torque at the tires, which came on earlier in the power band than the stock tune, making the car really jump off the line and get going in a much bigger hurry. However, we also managed to lose 15 peak horsepower in the process. Because the COBB tune greatly increased boost pressure earlier in the power band, the very tiny stock intercooler just wasn't able to keep up with the amount of heat being generated. Now, we'd take a massive gain in low-end torque over a piddling loss of high-end power that we'd rarely see, but it was a bit disconcerting. Luckily, custom tuning doesn't suffer quite as bad, and aftermarket intercoolers are now available to mitigate the problem.
