2012 F150 Ecoboost Supercrew Max Tow
Awesome product so far! Got 87,89,91 performance/tow tunes and 87,89 economy tunes. Canned tunes already on the device are pretty decent as well. With performance/tow, the torque converter locks up earlier and doesn't open up as much. Stock, it seemed like the converter would stay open 90% of the time in city driving. Shift points are more positive and slightly firmer and quicker, but not rough or harsh. Big increase in torque from idle to redline, with a decent increase in horsepower too. It is possible no get improved MPG on performance/towing tunes from what I've seen, but if you drive even a little bit aggressive, you will lose some economy. For towing an 8000lb trailer, it is about USABLE power, as in what you can get in the 1800-2500RPM range, where the truck tends to run without downshifting as often. The gains in that lower end are HUGE. Economy tune seems to try to keep the engine in a vacuum state(zero boost) during most driving and even under mild to moderate acceleration. It also goes for higher gears a bit sooner. The truck is perfectly drivable, but it feels like the gas pedal is very dampened, with slower and less twitchy response compared to performance/towing. For stop-and-go traffic, the gain is 5-6MPG. Highway at 75MPH, maybe 1MPG.

I have to say I love this tuner. I did however make the mistake of running the 93 max performance tune first, then running my 87 economy tune. The tuner on 93 performance brings the beast out of the truck. My ecoboost is stock except for the tuner. And on 87 economy I gained some good mpg. Before the tuner I averaged about 12.5 mpg on 35 nitto m/ts, on the performance I got 14 mpg and on economy I got 16.9 mpg in the city with very little highway. The only thing is getting used to scrolling through the tuners menus. A bit touchy.

This is one very powerful device. But to really appreciate its full potential the tunes from 5 star are a must! I purchased this with an afe stage 2 intake, charge pipe and stainlessworks s-tube exhaust. I had quite high expectations in pushing my ecoboost. When i first loaded the caned 91 perf tune i was a very disappointed. The power i expected was not there, the shifting was extremely harsh and the 1-2 often made me think it would hurt my truck long term. When i received my tunes ( very quickly might i add ) i loaded the 5star 93 perf tune. The second i pulled out of the driveway i was instantly satisfied with the smooth but firm shifting and abundant amount of torque! The truck pulls like a sports car and is overall very fun to drive. I've never been a fan of automatic transmissions but this tune does a great job at controlling the 6speed. It really always seems to be in the right gear and shifts in a nice firm but smooth way. Very satisfied with this device and the tunes from 5star.

Great product and addition to the truck! Super easy to use and navigate. Has tons of features, and you monitor so many things on the truck. Highly recommend this product to anyone that's looking for more power, better fuel economy, and likes to see live feedback for many different areas of your truck ranging from boost, coolant temps, volts, iat temps and so on. Very cool and smart tuner. Then you add the custom tuning ability and how many files it stores with great customer service from stage3 its a no brainer to get this tuner!

Love it, really made the truck alive.. I'm running a canned 91 octane tune right now on it and I can't wait to take the other aftermarket parts into account. I love the display and how customizable it is. It reads everything you need to know about your truck and its super simple to add tunes from the computer even for the technically challenged. I plugged it into the computer the screen turned on but no image was displayed and it looked like white noise... Scared me. The screen would make beeping sounds if you would click where the buttons should be.. I simply unplugged it and tried a different USB port and that worked... But still... Maybe future problem I hope not

This programmer is absolutely sick! After installing the new Iridium spark plugs gapped at.030 , and an AFE twin cold air intake, this truck runs like a scalded dog! What a BEAST!! My 0-60 times have dropped substantially... 7.70 sec to 5.99!! So, as of now, I have tunes for the 87 octane both Economy and performance, 91 octane for performance and here in Michigan, we have 93 octane fuel, which I have tunes for economy as well as performance. I installed the software on the tuner and installed the tuner to the truck. Turn it up, full tilt boogie and the smile on your face will be as big as the truck!! It will literally throw you back into the seat when you stab the throttle! Awesome product guys!! I may even add a few more go fast goodies in the near future. I know I have over 500 lbs. torque at the crank and at least 450 hp. Still trying to get Johnny Law away from the area where I can do a 1/4 mile test.

This tuner is the best out there! 5 Star Tuning creates great custom tunes that won't put too much strain on your Engine or Tranny. Very pleased with the results. My truck gets after it off the line and adds great acceleration while passing vehicles on the highway. This day and age a touch screen is a must have as you can change settings anytime you want. One of the great features of this tuner is that it has several options of gauges to monitor your trucks performance. Thanks Lou and Stage 3!

Shipping: Stage3 had my order shipped out the same day, very prompt service on their part. Package arrived one day late due to issues with USPS. I would suggest offering other shipping methods in addition to USPS. I cringe anytime I have to rely on the USPS for an important package such as this one. Support: Upon providing the specific details of my vehicle my custom tunes were delivered the same day. Very quick turnaround on this. Instillation: Windows 7 laptop - no issues. Windows 8 laptop - I had to locate and manually install the drivers in order for the laptop to communicate with the unit. This was resolved in about 5 minutes. The instructions provided for all aspects of downloading and installing the tunes to my truck were spot on and very easy to follow. Performance: The first tune I ran was the 93 octane performance tune. My truck is completely stock aside from this tuner, once the tune was applied it was like I was driving a different vehicle. The increased responsiveness and increased power were evident even before I got out of my neighborhood and onto the highway. Once I got out on the open road it was amazing how much more powerful the truck felt, my right foot is very appreciative of this purchase. Bottom line: This product in my opinion is well worth the cost for the immediate performance gains for such a simple install. If you are on the fence about getting one don't be, get it you will not be disappointed.

As someone who has done my own tuning on previous vehicles, I was looking for a way adjust the stock Ford calibration to improve drivability and fuel economy. As there are not easily accessible options to tune my truck myself, the SCT Livewire TS+ with the 5-Star tunes was the next best option. Installation was simple and fast. I used the SCT preloaded tunes for a few days until my 5-Star tunes arrived. The SCT tunes were decent, but shifted harshly. I bought the 5-Star 87 octane tow tune, 91 tow, 91 performance, and 93 performance. My initial impressions were that with the 5-Star tunes, the truck drove the way it should have from the factory. The AFR is leaner than stock, saving fuel with more power. On the 91 tow tune, the boost is about 15.5psi vs 11psi stock. When I'm conservative with my driving, I gain about 2mpg over stock. It's a different story when the pedal goes down though. The shifting is smooth and you can tell the torque converter locks up more quickly Everything that bothered me with the stock calibration has been ironed out by 5-Star. I feel the 5-Star tunes are a good compromise between power, economy, and reliability. I highly recommend the SCT unit and these tunes.

I'll start by saying I didn't know much about my truck other than I wanted it to be faster and more powerful. i called Noah @ Stage 3 and we had several conversations about different products and what they could do for the truck. At no time did I feel like I was being oversold on products I didn't need. So customer service and education is a 5 star hands down. We narrowed it down to a 3 piece upgrade. Cold air intake, which I had, the livewire along without the custom tunes offered by Stage 3, and the Stainless works down pipe. Installation of the SCT Livewire was a breeze, and keep in mind I have no knowledge about what goes on under the hood:-) While I waited on the custom tunes to arrive I loaded a tune that ships with the Livewire. The tune was a very noticeable difference! Now, once the custom tunes arrived, I uploaded them to the Livewire (easily) filled up with 93 and switched to the performance tune. I cannot believe the difference in the way my truck performs! Can't wait to put the downpipe on next! Thanks guys! Livewire + Custom Tunes= AMAZING!!

Warning - Before buying this item, take your truck to the dealer and have the strategy code updated. Failure to do this will cause you nothing but grief and you may not be able to return the unit. You're going to get grief trying to get the strategy code updated anyway. Ford is not happy doing this if it isn't their idea. I've had mine for 2 months and it looks like it will be several more months before I can get a Ford dealership to upgrade the strategy code. The tuner makes an attractive paper weight in the mean time.

When I first received it I used the preloaded tunes and they gave me instant power but the shifting was a little rough. Once I loaded the 5 Star tunes the rough shifting went away and the instant power came. I have used both the 87 Tow/Performance and the 93 Performance and both are great but the 93 Performance you def spin tires a lot and it throws you back in your seat. It is a must for your vehicle!

If you have windows 8 or Windows 10, READ! I had quite the learning curve. Also make sure your trucks PCM has been updated, i plugged my tuner in, Stage 3 said my truck was 3 strategy codes behind, took me 2 days to get worked into Ford, and 95$ later, all was fixed. You will have to go to SCTFLASH.COM and download a special driver for this tuner. It can get confusing, call them and they can guide you through it. (I learned this the hard way) I got upset when i couldn't figure it out, pressed the WIFI button on the tuner, messed everything up. Thought I fixed my driver issues, downloaded everything, turns out the tuner messes up that way, lost my stock tune, had to send the whole tuner into SCT. My mistake. However the guy on the phone did tell me it is complicated, so I didn't feel like a complete moron. I'm stuck right now with the 93 P/T on my truck. I'm super excited for when i get it back and can do the 93 PT, however the 93 P/T is a new truck itself. I also purchased the Edge Dash Pod for this and made it work for this tuner. Read my review on it and I will tell you how.

I put a leveling kit along with bigger tires (34s) on my truck and lost power and fuel economy. I bought this tuner along with 5* tunes. Unless you put higher octane fuel in normally, I would stick with the 3 tunes it comes with. I've run the canned tune (awesome), the 5* 87 economy tune (not a lot of power but the mpgs come back), and currently run the 5* 87 tow/perf tune (more power than stock, mpgs almost back to stock). I never buy high octane fuel but ended up getting the 5* 87 trans, 89 tow/perf, 93 perf tunes along with the 2 mentioned above. Great tuner. The gauges are worthless to me, I have no idea what most of them are for. I wish you could monitor EGTs, but I haven't figured out how to do this. I would buy this tuner again!

I ordered the SCT livewire TS tuner and with in a few days I received it with in a few days. I sent in my vehicle info and modifications to 5star though the Stage3 website which stage3 makes very easy. I received my custom tunes in less than 24 hours which I was pleasantly surprised in. I added the tunes to my livewire ( thanks to the tutorial videos and instructions on the SCT website and videos on both Stage3 and SCT which helped making operating and customizing the programmer easy. I loaded in the 91 octane Performance/tow tune in to my truck which took maybe 15 minuets ( probably not even that long ) and drove my truck. Wow, its like driving a completely different truck, instantly there is more throttle response. Day to day driving is more pleasurable with the increase in throttle response it shifts nice and smooth during normal driving but when you hammer down on the throttle it pulls quite nicely through the whole RPM band until it shifts which when on the throttle it does have a quick / firm shift. Before the tune the top end felt like it leveled off and left you feeling like there should be more power there. I'm very pleased with how easy Stage3 makes the whole process of ordering and getting you custom tunes for your vehicle. The livewire touch screen and gauge customizability is pretty awesome. The only only thing I wish I could do which I understand why you cant. is to actually be able to shift on the fly. other than that I personally think this Tuner with the 5 star tunes are the best thing you could get..

So far so good. Was a little bit of a trick to download and load the tunes to the tuner. Had to plug the tuner into the truck, then update the tuner, then download the tunes, then transfer one at a time to the tuner. Each tune/retune is about a five minute event. So far I have tried all the tunes, performance/towing/eco. Performance tune is great at part(low) and full throttle. At mid throttle you can tell they are keeping the turbos spooled and bleeding the boost with the blow off as the truck gets a noticeable stumble. At a normal accel or full throttle it shifts and runs spectacularly. Towing tune like others have noted is just fantastic. Spool up is great, power is wonderfully balanced, and the shifts are much better than stock. Eco tune is very well balanced, but expectedly boring. Press the throttle to the floor however, and it will come alive. All in all a great mod.

As others have stated in previous reviews, the out-of-the-box tune shipped with the Livewire TS+ doesn't compare to the custom tunes you'll get from 5 Star. Spend the extra money and get the custom tunes! Aside from the performance gains, removing the speed limiter (for dyno runs) and setting the appropriate tire size are both very nice features this tuner supports. I haven't used the economy tune yet but getting 14.5 MPG with 93 performance tune.

Install 1 hour, but simple. 2012 F150 ecoboost. By far the best upgrade for power. Installed today. Still havnt recieved 5 star tunes, but the canned tunes are still pretty awesome. I can inly imagine once i get 5 star tunes. The boost vuage is priceless. All the other diagnostics like air intake temp are priceless as well. I have an air raid and i was wondering if ir really gers cold air the whole time ive had it... It does, only a few degrees over outside temp. Super customizable. No brainer purchase. Heard complaints about shifting with canned tunes. Not seeing it at all honestly. Cant wait for 5 star

Unbelievable difference between stock and just an 89 performance/tow tune. I am currently running the 91 performance tune in it. When stock I was getting between 12.5 mpg and 13 mpg. After putting the tuner on with the custom tunes the 89 performance/tow tune didn’t gain me any mpg but you could definitely feel a difference in performance. After switching to the 91 performance tune I can definitely feel a difference in performance between the 89 and 91 tune but I went from 12.4 mpg to 18.9 mpg. The only thing I have done to my truck other than the tuner is an AFE cold air intake and a MBRP 4” cat back exhaust. I installed the tuner before I had my custom tunes uploaded to it but I didn’t try to run the preloaded tunes that come on it, I used it for gauges. I forgot to go into the settings and change the weight of my truck before I ran my first performance test on I so it calculated my estimated HP and TQ wrong, but my quarter mile, 0-60, and 0-30 are all accurate ( pictures should be uploaded but I don’t know where they will show up ) . After I got my tunes I did it all again except this time I changed the weight of my truck. Both runs that I did were both in the same place with the same weather conditions and the temperatures were within 5° of each other. Also the 91 performance tune pushed my truck from a top end of 15psi of boost (stock) to 21psi of boost

Holy cow... I loaded my eco tune for my truck with the banks ram air system. My city milage went from 16.3 to 18.2 for the last couple of weeks. I have not played with my performance tunes yet. If this is the performance increase of eco I cant even imagine what will happen with performance tunes. I also will be upgrading a couple more things which will have a large impact on the performance, I like the fact I can retune anytime.

My girlfriend got me this for Christmas. I debated back and forth on getting a tuner or not. I decided on the livewire ts+ a few of my friends have it and I can tell you I am not disappointed. I have an afe cold air intake and catless down pipes along with the tuner. I got the 87 octane economy, 89 performance and tow, and 93 performance tunes. With the economy tune I've seen any where from 1.5 to 2 mpg increase in fuel consumption and the performance tune is insane the throttle response is great can light up the tires when I want. Haven't used the tow tune yet as it's not summer and I can't pull my boat. I highly recommend well worth the money.

Customer Question I'm interested in the sct livewire ts, I have minor upgrades to my truck, can stage 3 load the best tune options for my upgrades?

Asked by: Jason - 8/8/2020
Customer Answer 5-Star's tunes will not be preloaded on the device. Unfortunately, due to the numerous updates and strategy changes that Ford has done over the years, you will need to use the tuner to pull your vehicle's strategy code so that the tunes can then be written and emailed to you.

Asked by: Tre - 7/18/2019
Customer Answer 5-Star's gasoline tuning for the 2011-2014 F150s hasn't changed that much over the years. They are doing a bit more with e30 and e50 blends these days. That being said, if you believe your truck has a lost a step, we can possibly walk you through a datalog to see if there are any tweaks to be made.

Asked by: Justin Correll - 6/12/2018
Customer Answer 5-Star's custom tuning already overhauls throttle sensitivity, response, and tip-in, and you generally don't need a further pedal module after a tune.

Asked by: Sean - 3/7/2018

Asked by: BoostedDoc - 2/27/2018
Customer Answer You can still use your Pedal Commander with 5-Star's tunes, though the custom tunes themselves do adjust pedal sensitivity, tip-in, and response to a large extent. Question: I would like to run a post cat exhaust cutout. So I can get loud when i want, and quiet when i need. How would exhaust cutouts after cat effect the tune/performance? I am also planning on adding full-race CAI and their intercooler relocate kit. Thank you for your time!

Asked by: BoostedDoc - 2/22/2018
Customer Answer You would not need a retune for larger tires on non-warrantied tunes. The Livewire allows you to adjust your own tire size whenever you need, though you will need to know your truck's revs per mile. If you're planning on doing after-cat cutouts, you would not need a tune, and any performance benefit would be fairly marginal. The Full-Race Intercooler Kit doesn't technically require a tune, though a retune can be helpful when it comes to maximizing power and torque.

Answer provided by: Jason@Stage3 (2/23/2018)

Customer Question I just bought a 2014 3.5L Ecoboost. In general I already love the way the truck drives; it's another world better than the old 98 4.6 F150 I used to drive. My only complaint is during rural driving it seems like it goes into 6th gear way too soon and you have to push the pedal down more than if it would just drop back into 5th. Watching the instant economy, dropping into 5th would probably provide better fuel mileage (and drivability) at these lower speeds. Other than this, the stock truck has plenty of power for me, and I'm averaging 17-18 mpg with a mix of mostly rural and highway driving (I don't drive aggressively). I also have a 3000lb trailer that I will occasionally tow long distances (400-600 miles). Question 1: Do you recommend the performance tune or the performance/tow tune. Longevity, drivability (fixing the shift pattern), and fuel economy are my biggest objectives but I want to be fine occassionally towing the trailer. Question 2: I thought you were supposed to use the Tow/Haul mode everytime you tow a trailer to protect overdrive in the transmission. Is that different with the Performance/Tow tune? I read an answer that you guys posted that said you wouldn't need to use it as often with the PT tune. Thanks!

Asked by: Mike Lemke - 2/19/2018
Customer Answer 1). If your main goal is fuel economy and drivability, then stick with the Performance/Tow tunes. The Performance/Tow tunes get better fuel economy during highway and rural driving, and don't have as harsh of shifting as the outright Performance tunes. 2). While that's what Ford recommends, it's most due to the fact that stock tuning is geared for fuel economy which makes the truck get to sixth gear as soon as possibly can. 5-Star's Performance/Tow tunes adjust shifting for more gear holding under all conditions, which means the transmission shifts less anyway. That being said, the Tow/Haul mode will still work just fine in conjunction with 5-Star's tunes, so if you like using Tow/Haul when you're loaded, you absolutely can.

After you submit the tune form, a Google Drive link with your tunes will be sent to you via email in roughly 1-2 business days.

Customer Question How much power gains can you expect to see with a 93 performance tune on a bone stock truck?

Asked by: Kyle Rea - 1/18/2018
Customer Answer Power gains and dyno results can vary greatly based on ambient conditions, tire size, gear ratio, and other factors. That being said, 5-Star has a dyno graph of a stock 2014 Tremor that hit 445lb-ft of torque and 320 peak horsepower at the wheels versus the stock run at 310lb-ft of torque and 250 peak horsepower at the wheels.

Customer Answer As long as your truck has the stock downpipes and isn't throwing a CEL, then you should be able to pass emissions without any issues. However, it is a good idea to get a full drive cycle on your truck (around 100 miles of driving) after tuning so that your truck doesn't have problems with readiness checks.

Customer Question I see you also sell the X4 and Bully Dog BDX Tuner, what is the advantage of the Livewire TS+ tuner? Also can you change the tune on the fly with any of these tuners, or does each tuner only hold one tune? Also you said 3 tunes are included in the price, are those three of the five I select when I order it?

Asked by: EcoBoosted - 2/26/2017
Customer Answer The principle advantages of the Livewire over the X4 and BDX are that it has a larger screen than either of them, and it's a gull touchscreen display which makes it an easier to use and effective monitoring device. The BDX and X4 just have button interfaces which makes it a bit more tedious to change display settings and gauges while driving. Not SCT/Bully Dog device can currently tune on the fly on Ford gas-powered vehicles. All of the devices can hold up to 10 custom tunes, though only a single tune can be uploaded at a time. The device comes with three tunes as standard. 4th and 5th tunes are available at an additional cost of $10 a piece.

Asked by: Salvador - 10/31/2016
Customer Answer Even when returning your vehicle to stock, there's still the possibility that your dealer or Ford itself could discover that your truck was tuned and refuse to cover any potential powertrain-related repairs under the terms of your factory warranty. Customer Answer Yep. The tune itself is uploaded and stored on your truck's ECU, and the tuner only has to stay in if you're interested in its monitoring functions. That being said, if you aren't interested in monitoring your truck, you'd probably be better off with the SCT X4 with 5-Star Tunes which offers the same tuning functionality at a lower price.

Asked by: Bryan - 4/3/2016
Customer Answer I believe the Livewire can function fine in temperatures approaching near or even below 0° Fahrenheit, but for longevity of the device, I would keep it indoors if the temperatures are going to drop into the 0° range.

Customer Question Hello, I have a 2012 ford f150 ecoboost. I currently blend 10 gallons of e85 with 15 gallons of 91 octane gasoline. Is there a tune that would work with my fuel?

Customer Answer 5-Star can tune for E30 or E40 blends, but your best bet would be to call us directly at 1-877-578-2433 so we can get more specific about what you're doing and whether or not that 91 octane fuel has 10% ethanol.

Customer Question What tunes would get me the best fuel mileage? I drive a 2011 v6 ecoboost. It is a daily driver and I don't haul stuff very often but I still want to have the option to switch to a towing or performance tune and get feel the power difference.

Asked by: vance - 2/27/2016
Customer Answer It depends on the kind of driving you're doing. If you're mostly highway or rural roads, then 5-Star's Performance/Tow tunes will get you the most fuel economy gains in that type of driving. For urban driving or stop-and-go traffic, 5-Star's Economy tunes will be your better bet. Frankly, I don't generally recommend 5-Star's Economy tunes, because they force the truck to drive very conservatively, which can be very unnatural.

Asked by: Brad - 1/2/2016
Customer Answer You don't "need" a custom tune for 4.10 gears, as rear-end gears are a user-adjustable option on a standard X4. However, custom tuning will net you better gains and drivability than a standard canned tune.

Asked by: Kevin - 12/4/2015
Customer Answer The device will store tunes until the point you delete them, and any tune you upload into your truck is stored in your F150's PCM until you change tunes or return the truck to stock. Still, it's a good idea to keep backups of your custom tunes and stock tune on your home PC.

Customer Question How easily is this tuner reset to factory settings for when I go to the dealership for service work? Do they ever need updating from my PC or once I upload them to the tuner they are set and can be switched "on the fly"? Also, how potent are these tunes? Running them constantly, will it wear more on my engine? Say if I only run a 91 octane performance/tow tune?

Asked by: Derek Russell - 11/20/2015
Customer Answer The tuner easily reuploads your stock tune with just a few button presses, though returning to stock isn't a guarantee that your dealer or service center won't discover your truck has been tuned. The Livewire TS+ does not have shift on the fly ability for gas motors. Despite their extra power, the tunes do not cause any excess wear on engines that are well maintained with regular oil changes and all maintenance and TSB items taken care of.

Customer Question Hey I'm highly considering getting the sct tuner for my 2014 f150. I have a few questions... I'm from Canada and Petro Canada gas station offers ultra 94 gas. Will this work with the octane 93 tunes? Also, if I were to add a aftermarket intercooler would I need to get new tunes?

Asked by: Derek - 11/16/2015
Customer Answer As long long as that 94 octane fuel is rated using standard US/Canda (R+M)/2 octane ratings, and not EU/Asia RON ratings, then you can use 5-Star's 93 octane tuning without an issue. If it's 94 RON fuel (or if you're unsure), then your best bet would be to call us directly at 1-877-578-2433 so we can have 5-Star get you the correct tuning.

I currently have a cat back exhaust and a intake system. Asked by: Russ - 11/16/2015
Customer Answer Under the terms of our Stage 3 Powertrain Warranty, all of the modifications you have in mind would be covered, though you would need to use catted downpipes, as off-road systems are not covered. Please keep in mind that this warranty is from us at Stage 3 and only cover's 5-Star's custom tunes, and will not cover SCT's canned tunes.

Customer Question My truck has 52k miles on it is there any restrictions on the power warranty as far as the mileage goes?

Asked by: Brandon clark - 11/12/2015
Customer Answer The warranties are restricted by the total mileage of your truck. The 5-year/60,000 mile warranty will only cover your truck up to 60,000 miles on its odometer, so you'd really only be covered for 8000 miles, if your truck has 52,000 miles already. The 6-year/100,000 mile warranty would cover you for 48,000 miles.

Asked by: 2014EcoBoost373 - 9/15/2015
Customer Answer If you're doing mostly highway driving, then you'll want a Performance/Tow tune. If you're doing mostly street driving or a lot of stop and go driving, then you'll want an Economy tune. Frankly, I don't really recommend getting the Economy tunes, as they force the truck to drive a certain way that most folks don't like very much. Unless you're real desperate to eek out as much fuel economy as you can, I'd suggest sticking with the Performance/Tow tunes.

Customer Question Can you download multiple times for different vehicles on the same programmer?

Asked by: Stephen - 8/28/2015
Customer Answer You technically could, however, everytime you marry/unmarry the tuner from two different vehicles, it takes away from the total unlock count present in the device every time you marry the tuner to a car, regardless if it's the same two vehicles. That means you can burn through those 5 unlocks that SCT gives you extremely fast, and we don't really recommend it. Call us directly at 1-877-578-2433 if you have further questions.

Customer Question Question concerning tune options related to octane rating. When using this tuner with custom it is obvious that you should be using the related fuel octane level based in the tune your using, ie- 91 performance/tow you will be using 91 octane fuel to prevent any possibly engine damage, however is this backwards capable? For instance can you run a 87 tune while using a higher octane? Say a 87 tune with 91 octane? I couldnt imagine this would cause an issue due to the fact that the fuel trims and spark advance setting, etc will be tuned for a lower octane fuel to prevent pinging, spark knock, etc, so running a higher octane fuel wouldn't cause any issues due to its ability to resist pinging naturaly? Thanks for the help!

Asked by: Nathan Carlson - 8/14/2015
Customer Answer You can always run a higher octane fuel than what you're tuned for. So, you example of using an 87 octane tune with 91 octane fuel will be totally fine. However, you can't do the opposite of running a 91 octane tune with 87 octane fuel, as the timing and spark advance changes from the tune can't cope with the lower fuel octane, and you'll get pinging, knock, and possible damage.

Customer Question I have a 2014 f150 eco boost 4x4 lariat with the stage 3 motorsports cold air intake. I am not planning to tow anything. So if I want a range of 5 star programs for 87 to 93 octane what would you recommend? Do I need to change the spark plugs, or just the gap to 0.030". What should be my best expected hp and torque increases with this Chip and cold air intake system? Could you tell me the pros and cons for upgrading the down pipe? Would the down pipe addition give me a lot of bang for the buck? Thank you, Craig J

Asked by: Craigj - 8/13/2015
Customer Answer It's really going to depend on what you're using your truck for, your locally available fuel octanes, and what your future plans for the truck are. In general, I usually recommend getting a 93 Performance Tune (if 93 octane is available in your area, otherwise just a 91 octane Performance tune), a 91 octane Performance/Tow tune, and an 87 octane Performance/Tow tune. That way you can run around throwing down power, but also be covered if you travel somewhere that only has lower-tier gasoline. On the 2014 F150s, you should already have SP-534s installed, but they will likely need to be regapped down to .030" to avoid rough running and misfires. Just be very careful when gapping them down, as their iridium tips are extremely brittle. You may want to consider getting a new set of plugs if you have a decent amount of miles on your truck. Depending on the tune you're running, ambient conditions, and your truck's drivetrain configuration, you could see around 100 extra lb-ft of torque and 75 horsepower to the ground. The pros of running a downpipe are the fact that they're probably the best bang-for-your-buck upgrade, and they'll help you make a ton of power and torque. The cons are increased drone, and even rasp if you go with off-road downpipes, and the fact that you'll likely not be able to pass emissions testing, depending on your area.

Customer Question How do the stock tunes compare to say the 87/89/91 octane Perf/Tow or Performance tunes? Does it make sense to get custom tuning or stick with the pre-loaded tunes if you don't plan on heavily modding the vehicle? Light mods include intake and possible exhaust.

Asked by: Tom - 8/12/2015
Customer Answer There really is no comparison between the factory tunes and 5-Star's tunes. 5-Star's custom tuning really stacks on the power and provides muck more efficient and effective transmission shifting (if a bit firmer than stock). Granted the 87 octane Performance/Tow tunes won't have quite as much power as their higher-octane cousins, but that's to be expected. While you can just stick with a standard Livewire with SCT's tunes, if you're not going o mod heavily, the canned tunes tend to make a bit less power, the shifting isn't quite as refined with a custom tune, and you'll be kind of out of luck if you change your plans and want to do a more aggressive build down the road.

Customer Question I'm living in Canada so I wanna know how the warranty works?

Asked by: Bear - 7/27/2015
Customer Answer It would work as if you're in the United States, essentially. If you purchase the warranty, we'll cover Powertrain repairs if your local dealership refuses to do them due to the presence of 5-Star's custom tuning or the presence of performance parts, as long as you're within the mileage and year terms of the warranty, and you've obeyed all of the fine print of our warranty terms. The only thing Canadian customers need to keep in mind is that all payout limits are in USD and not CAD. If you have any further questions, please call us directly at 1-877-578-2433.

Customer Question What is the difference between the performance tune and the performance/tow tune? I assume the first is for max HP and the other is max torque?

Asked by: Brian - 5/17/2015
Customer Answer You're kind of on the right track, though the shifting of the truck is also different between the two tunes. The pure Performance tunes make more power than their equivalent Performance/Tow tunes, but the shifting of the transmission is extremely fast and firm, and the shift points are designed to keep your truck in an optimal power band for fast acceleration and horsepower. The Performance/Tow tunes come packing less overall power, but shifting is not as harsh and firm as the Performance Only tunes and keep your truck in a better position for low-end torque.

Customer Question what tunes would be the best to get with the programmer for better MPG then which one for towing then which one for better MPG and towing?

Asked by: 2011 ecoboost - 4/27/2015
Customer Answer Any gain in MPG is going to largely depend on how you drive. In general, the Economy tunes (especially 91 octane or higher) will get you the biggest gain in fuel economy, with some people seeing a full 2 extra mpg over the stock tune. However, the Economy tunes do force your truck to run in a very conservative manner, and we generally don't recommend grabbing them. The next best tunes for fuel economy are the Performance/Tow tunes, which are also the ones you'd want t use for towing, and most folks see up to 1.5mpg over stock, assuming no change in driving style.

Customer Question whats the difference in the 91 performance/tow and the 91 trans tune? is this included in the perf/tow tune or is it a trans tune that runs with all the other tunes, for example: 91 performance tune and the trans tune running together at same time? my question is how does the trans tune work if I'm running a performance tune or do they work together at the same time?

Asked by: MIKE - 4/20/2015
Customer Answer The "Trans Only" tune and the "Performance/Tow" tune do not run at the same time. They're two separate tunes. The Transmission only tune keeps your truck at its factory power levels and merely adjusts your F150's shift patterns for improved drivability. The Performance/Tow tune also adjusts your truck's shift patterns, but it also adds a bunch of horsepower and torque to your truck's output.

Customer Question Can larger wheel and tire sizes be included (along with added performance parts) in the custom tunes for this programmer?

Asked by: Groundhawg - 4/14/2015
Customer Answer We send you a tune sheet after you order, and one of the things we require to know is wheel and tire size. 5-Star will then use the information on the tune sheet to create your custom tunes.

Customer Question I'm looking to purchase the #5015 ecoboost live wire tuner for my 2011 F150. My question is if I order that tuner does it come ready to plug into my trucks computer and input what ever tune I want to run out of the box, or do I have to use my laptop to activate and update the programmer first? I'm not verygood with techi things and stuff of that nature.LOL:) Next question is do you accept pay pal ?

Asked by: MIKE - 4/10/2015
Customer Answer The tuner will not actually arrive with any custom tunes loaded onto it. We need you to use the tuner to get the "Strategy Code" and other information off of your truck, before we can have 5-Star write your tunes. Once the tunes are written, they'll be emailed to you, and you'll hook your tuner into your home computer to put them on the device, which you can then put into your truck. We do take PayPal as a form of payment. Call us at 1-877-578-2433 for more information.

Asked by: Paul Williams - 4/8/2015
Customer Answer We're planning on carrying SCT's new Livewire TS+ once they become more readily available in sufficient quantities, and they'll likely just supersede the older Livewires as part of our packages.

Customer Question Are there significant differences between the performance/tow and straight performance tunes? What's the benefit of having the straight performance tune over the performance/tow tune?

Asked by: Jay - 4/3/2015
Customer Answer I wouldn't say significant, but there is noticeable differences. The Performance Tune only has a bit more power and torque than the Performance/Tow tunes, but the pure Performance Tunes have much harder, faster, and aggressive shifting that makes it accelerate faster and feel more powerful, at the expense of some ride quality.

Customer Question Hi, I have several questions. I have a 2013 F150 3.5L ecoboost. I am looking at the Livewire TS tuner. 1.) For the 93 performance tune I see it says for use on modified trucks. Can it be used on a stock truck safely? Or what is considered a modified truck (i.e engine work, trans work, etc.)? 2.) Is the trans tune just to sharpen shift points with no horsepower gains?

Asked by: Jordan - 3/23/2015
Customer Answer The 93 octane performance tune is fine to use on bone-stock F150s. That was merely an example of why you may want to choose one tune over another. The transmission tune is exactly that. It's an improvement in shifting and its shift points, but doesn't actually add any power or torque.

Customer Question can you see your boost gauge on the tuner ?

Asked by: brendan - 3/17/2015
Customer Answer Yup. The Livewire can read boost pressure is psi, as that information is output through the OBD-II on the EcoBoost F150s.

Customer Question I have a Superchip for my 3.5 Ecoboost. HP gain is good but shift time delay makes me redline constantly. Does this programmer allow manual adjustment to shift points and timing?

Asked by: GrinderGuy - 3/13/2015
Customer Answer The 5-Star custom tuning included with this tuner already adjusts shift points much more effectively than SuperChips tuning and are tailored to whichever tune you choose to run. Shift pressures are adjustable to some extent on non-warrantied tunes, however.

Customer Question Any concerns with running these tunes at higher elevations? Or in colder winter climates?

Asked by: chris - 3/7/2015
Customer Answer It kind of depends on the elevation, but if you live in an area that's greater than 5,000ft, you may want to consider giving us a call directly so we can have 5-star make some purpose-built high elevation tunes for same measure.

Customer Question Does the Livewire TS backup the existing factory tune before making any changes or have the means to do that and restore it if necessary?

Asked by: Perry Moon - 2/23/2015
Customer Answer It absolutely does. As part of the process of uploading your first tune, the Livewire downloads and saves your factory tune file and has an easy to use "return to stock"function.

Customer Question I was wondering about adding tunes to this at a later date. My truck is completely stock at the moment. I want to get three tunes for it now. However, I plan on adding cold air intake and exhaust down the road. If I wanted to get custom tunes to accommodate these add ons, how would I go about ordering those? Also could you please give me an idea of how much each extra tune would cost me? Thank you

Asked by: Joe - 2/20/2015
Customer Answer Once you order tunes, you become part of our Lifetime Tunes Program, where you receive free tunes for life on tunable products that you purchase from Stage 3. In your case, basic bolt-ons like a cat-back system wouldn't require retuning, since they don't alter airflow enough. If you were to grab a set of downpipes or other hardware that did require tune, we would retune your truck for free, as long as you bought those parts from Stage 3 Motorsports.

Customer Answer We absolutely would, though to save time, you may want to consider giving us a call directly at 1-877-578-2433 and specifying that you need specialized elevation tunes for your truck. That way, we can limit the amount of times that you may need to datalog or get your tunes revised from the get-go.

Asked by: Tyson - 2/15/2015
Customer Answer It can't switch on-the-fly on the EcoBoost F150s or gasoline trucks, unfortunately. You would need to stop and go through the whole tuning process in order to get a new tune running.

Customer Question Will this programmer put things back to stock, without a dealer knowing if anything was plugged into the computer if something happens that warranty has to cover?

Asked by: Taylor Dengel - 2/5/2015

If you're concerned about your vehicle's factory Powertrain Warranty, give us a call directly at 1-877-578-2433.

Customer Question If i purchase the tuner will it void my factory warranty???

Asked by: David Finkler - 12/28/2014
Customer Answer Any aftermarket tuning has the chance of potential powertrain failures to not be covered by the factory warranty, de facto voiding it out. Still, all warranty decisions are up to individual dealerships, and its best to get a formal answer from your service advisor in writing.

Customer Question with the custom tunes can I adjust transmission shift points and firmness, like if I had 91octane performance/tow tune or is that option only in you have trans tune only? Also can I have custom tunes made for mods that I have on truck, I have Gibson 3inch cat back exhaust, afe CAI, afe bladerunner charge pipe? Also if I was to buy could you ship tuner with the custom tunes installed on it ? little worried might not download tunes on programmer correctly.

Asked by: Brian - 11/5/2014
Customer Answer All of 5-Star's tunes adjust the shifting of your truck, but don't leave those options open for custom adjustments. If you do want your transmission to shift a certain way, you can always contact us, and we'll see about getting you revised tunes. The custom tunes will take into account your other modifications. We can't load the tunes onto the device for you, because we actually need to send you the tuner in order to verify your truck's PCM strategy code.

Customer Question Does this tunner let you adjust for larger tires? Does it remove the rev limiter?

Asked by: Jeremy - 10/8/2014
Customer Answer The tuner will allow you to adjust for larger tires. The custom tunes do not allow for the removal or adjustment of the rev limiter. Given that the EcoBoost trucks make peak power early in the RPM range, adjusting or removing the limiter is fairly pointless and can end up hurting your engine.

Customer Question I have a 2014 Ecoboost I'm thinking about ordering one of your liverwire ts tuners with tunes for. I can only get 92 octane fuel here in Wa. Should I order the 91 octane tunes or 93 octane tunes for the biggest gains (safely)? I want to get the most out of the tuner that I can. Also, with a stock truck, do you typically see MPG gains over the factory tune?

Asked by: Bob - 9/20/2014
Customer Answer Your best bet would be to use 91 octane tunes with the 92 octane fuel to give you a better margin of safety. It's generally not a great idea to use lower octane fuel than what your truck is tuned for. You will see an MPG increase after tuning, even if your truck is stock. However, that does require you to maintain your currently driving habits. A lot of people actually see a loss in fuel economy after tuning, because they're punching the throttle all the time to feel that extra power. As long you drive for economy, you'll see better economy than stock.

Customer Question I've purchased all of my performance ugrades through your company - including the AFE Cold air intake, cover, charge pipe, and solo exhaust...I want to purchase the livewire tuner next and probably the warranty as I like the peace of mind w/ the potential for the voided factory warranty. Can the warranty be purchased after the fact? Also- if I buy the 60k can iI purchase the 100k later and pay the difference?

Asked by: Jon - 8/19/2014
Customer Answer The warranty can be purchased later, however, we will need to send you a new tune that has a specific file format and locks out certain user-adjustable functions in order for us to know what tune was in your truck if anything were to happen. Unfortunately, you cannot split the difference between the two warranties. One must be chosen up front.

Customer Question Looking at the AFR it looks like it is running beyond rich. I get they want to keep the motor cool, but what about the fuel burning in the cat? Have you had anyone saying its blowing cats out and getting a code for the rear 02?

Asked by: Mike - 8/15/2014
Customer Answer Keep in mind that the dyno graph you're looking at is for an 87 octane tune, which generally needs to run on the richer side to prevent pre-detonation, especially given that not all 87 octane are created equals with additives and whatever else further degrading its octane. Anyway, we have never had an issue with the cats or rear O2 sensors with one of 5-Stars tunes.

Customer Question Can you adjust speedo/odometer for tire size with this tuner?

Asked by: Dwayne - 8/7/2014
Customer Answer You wouldn't be able to adjust tire size with a custom tune, mostly because we only warranty up to 35" tires on the EcoBoosts. However, we'll always be more than happy to adjust tire size, gear ratio, and anything else you need via a revised tune.

Customer Question How do I purchase tunes only, to my existing sct x4 unit? Also, I have tried other custom tunes from other tuners but unhappy with ping/detonation issues and/or power gain is minimal. What do you recommend?

Asked by: arnan zulic - 7/22/2014
Customer Answer Tunes can be purchased alone in either as single tunes, a pair of tunes, or a bundle of three tunes. The most important thing you can do is make sure you're using the proper octane fuel that matches your choice of tunes. If you're still having a problems, then you'd be more than welcome to contact us directly so we could have you run a datalog and get your tunes adjusted from there.

Customer Question 2012 F-150 EB Max Tow. I tow an 8000lb trailer, and plan to run the 87 or 91 towing tune. Would installing a 170° thermostat be a good idea as well? Engine longevity and performance is more important than fuel economy. I tow mostly in the southern US, so heat is a concern. Can the tuner adjust the fans, etc for the 170 t-stat?

Asked by: Keith 2012 F150 EB - 4/29/2014
Customer Answer 5-Star can absolutely tune for a 170° thermostat, and if your truck is solely your towing vehicle, then a lower temperature thermostat isn't a bad idea. However, 5-Star doesn't recommend 170° thermostats for trucks that see more daily driving than anything else, due to the fact that the engine does need to run through it's factory-specified heat cycles for reliability and longevity.

Customer Question why cant you get a 87 octane performance tune??

Asked by: Chris 2012 f150 - 10/28/2013
Customer Answer You actually can get an 87 octane performance tune. You just need to call us directly at 1-877-578-2433. The reason we don't have a drop-down option for an 87 octane performance is because 5-Star strongly recommends using 91+ octane performance tunes on modified trucks. An 87 octane performance tune is available for vehicles that are basically stock.
