The Ultimate Half-Ton Reliability Guide: How to Get 250,000+ Miles Out of Your Truck
The Ultimate Half-Ton Reliability Guide: How to Get 250,000+ Miles Out of Your Truck
Posted by Chris Groote on 4/18/2025 to
Informative Articles
When it comes to longevity, not all half-ton trucks are created equal. Some models have a well-earned reputation for hitting the 250,000-mile mark and beyond, while others struggle to make it past 150,000 miles without major repairs. If you’re driving a Toyota Tacoma, Ford F-150, Ford Ranger, or Ram 1500, your truck is already among the most durable options on the market.
Most of us think the weak links in long-term reliability are the drivetrain, but the truth is, rust, suspension, and even electrical issues kill a lot more trucks than a bad engine or a dead transmission. So, whether you're driving a Ford F-150, Toyota Tacoma, Ram 1500, or Ford Ranger, proper maintenance and smart upgrades can keep your truck running strong for decades. Here’s what you need to know:

How to Improve Gas Mileage in Your 2019-2024 Ram 1500 5.7 HEMI Without Killing Performance

Owning a
2019-2024 Ram 1500
with the
5.7L HEMI
means enjoying V8 power and capability, but it also means dealing with fuel economy that often lags behind its Ford F-150 and GM LS competitors. The HEMI’s performance is undeniable, but many owners find themselves looking for ways to stretch their fuel mileage without sacrificing the truck’s power. Fortunately, with the right upgrades and driving habits, you can improve gas mileage while keeping the performance you rely on.

Off-Roading on a Budget: Essential Mods for Your 3rd Gen Tacoma
Off-Roading on a Budget: Essential Mods for Your 3rd Gen Tacoma
Posted by Chris Groote on 4/11/2025 to
Top Mods
Taking your bare bones
2016-2023 Toyota Tacoma
off the pavement doesn’t mean you can’t get where everyone’s going, and it doesn’t mean you’ve got to spend a fortune on a TRD Pro. While high-end off-road Tacomas like the TRD Pro come with factory-built capabilities, they also come with a hefty price tag. Fortunately, with a few well-chosen upgrades, you can transform your base-model Tacoma into a trail-ready machine at a fraction of the cost.
One of the things that always strikes us as interesting is how seemingly modest builds can tackle tough terrain with ease. A few well-thought-out upgrades now can let you hit some great trails and gain the experience needed to know what “big” upgrades might be worth investing in later.
Take the factory limited-slip rear differential in many Tacomas—it’s helped countless trucks navigate rugged paths for years. Yes, a locking differential is an upgrade, but a smart driver with some experience can make a factory limited slip work in challenging terrain.
Your Dad’s 1983 solid axle SR-5 did it with open diffs!
For the budget-minded wheeler, there’s little need to dive into major drivetrain modifications just yet. Here are our top five upgrades to get your 3rd Gen Tacoma off the beaten path without emptying your wallet.

Bronco Upgrades, Day One: Off-Road Lighting for Your Bronco
Bronco Upgrades, Day One: Off-Road Lighting for Your Bronco
Posted by Chris Groote on 4/7/2025 to
There are a TON of things new owners plan to do to their rigs from the very first day they’ve got them, and the
Ford Bronco
offers a lot of potential in a reasonably priced package on the new and used market today. But where to start? No worries, we’ve been digging into Day One modification options in this series for Bronco owners, and this time? We’re talking about
off road lighting
.
Think about it: you’ve planned the perfect off-road adventure. The trail is mapped, the gear is packed, and your Bronco’s ready to roll. But as the sun dips below the horizon, your factory headlights or fogs fail to reveal the rocks, dips, and obstacles ahead. This is where off-road lighting becomes not just a luxury but a necessity.
When you take your Bronco off-road, the landscape can change dramatically with the time of day. Factory lighting, while functional for paved roads, falls short in the rugged environments where many Bronco owners thrive. Proper
off-road lighting
does more than illuminate the way—it enhances safety, improves navigation, and ensures that no obstacle goes unseen. Whether you’re crawling over rocks, wading through mud, or setting up camp in the dark, the right lights transform your experience.

owners might feel a bit left behind, given the redesigned front end and headlights on the newest models. The good news is now you can upgrade to
Morimoto’s XB Evo LED headlights

Ford F-150 Tremor: What’s Next? The Best Upgrades for Performance and Personalization
Posted by Chris Groote on 3/14/2025 to
Before you Go
The
Ford F-150 Tremor
is one of the most capable off-road trucks straight from the factory. Unlike standard F-150 models, the Tremor package includes off-road-tuned suspension, larger all-terrain tires, reinforced skid plates, a locking rear differential, and unique styling that sets it apart. It’s designed for adventure right out of the gate, and a LOT of the work of a “true” off road truck is already done when you pick it up at the dealership.
But if you own a Tremor, you might be wondering: What can I upgrade? The good news is that while Ford did a great job with the Tremor, there’s still plenty of room for customization. Whether you want more power, better off-road capability, or aesthetic upgrades, Stage 3 Motorsports has ALL the goods to help you take your Tremor to the next level.

Bronco Upgrades, Day One: Armor Up with Skid Plates and Rock Sliders
Bronco Upgrades, Day One: Armor Up with Skid Plates and Rock Sliders
Posted by Chris Groote on 3/7/2025 to
Informative Articles
Whether you’re hitting the trails in a brand-new
Ford Bronco
or a late-model classic, protecting your investment should be at the top of your priority list. Now, at Stage 3 Motorsports, we’ve been sharing some “Day One” mods every Bronco owner should consider, and adding some protection is high on that list. Off-road adventures can be unpredictable, with rocks, tree stumps, and debris waiting to wreak havoc on your Bronco’s undercarriage. That’s why skid plates and rock sliders are essential Day One upgrades for any Bronco owner. With the right armor, your Bronco will be ready to tackle rough terrain while keeping critical components safe and sound.
The Bronco is built tough, but even the most capable vehicles need extra protection when venturing off-road. Factory skid plates and steps offer decent coverage for light trails, but they often fall short for serious off-roading. Upgrading to aftermarket
Skid Plates
and
Rock Sliders
ensures your Bronco’s vital components are shielded from damage that could leave you stranded or facing costly repairs.

Maximizing the 2017-2020 Raptor with Tuners and Upgrades
Maximizing the 2017-2020 Raptor with Tuners and Upgrades
Posted by Chris Groote on 3/3/2025 to
Before you Buy
The
2017-2020 Ford F-150 Raptor
is an engineering marvel in the off-road world. Powered by a 3.5-liter high-output EcoBoost V6, this beast churns out 450 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque, mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. Designed for dominating dunes, trails, and highways alike, the Raptor also features advanced Fox Racing suspension, aluminum-intensive construction for reduced weight, and 35-inch all-terrain tires that enhance its capability. While its factory performance was unprecedented, and remains exceptional, enthusiasts looking to push boundaries can turn to aftermarket upgrades to unlock even more potential.
It’s worth remembering the Raptor’s EcoBoost engine provides impressive power delivery, a broad torque curve, and excellent fuel efficiency for its class. Paired with the 10-speed transmission, it offers smooth, rapid gear changes that adapt to a variety of driving conditions. Meanwhile, the truck’s advanced suspension system allows for 13 inches of front and 13.9 inches of rear travel, making it a leader in off-road capability. Despite its prowess, some Raptor owners seek to personalize and enhance their truck’s performance, and that’s where Stage 3 Motorsports comes in.

The Basics of DIY Maintenance and the Foundation of Every Build
The Basics of DIY Maintenance and the Foundation of Every Build
Posted by Chris Groote on 2/26/2025 to
Informative Articles
The simple fact is that whether you're looking at a big-budget SEMA build or the rustiest daily driver in Ohio, any car or truck is going to need maintenance. From a tired 5.4 powered F150 to the newest Ranger and a bumper to bumper warranty, there are plenty of DIY maintenance and upgrade projects you can tackle to ensure your truck is running at its best. Here’s a look at some practical and performance-oriented DIY tasks anyone can take on.
Now, obviously, a LOT of new cars and trucks come with extended maintenance packages for the buyer, but most of those are done for if you aren’t the first owner, or you’re past a certain number of miles. So even if you’ve got a “fresh” ride, you might want to begin taking care of basic maintenance yourself – it really is the cornerstone of keeping your truck in excellent condition. These tasks are manageable for most DIYers and save time and money compared to taking your vehicle to a shop.

Leveling Kit vs. Lift Kit: Choosing the Right Suspension Upgrade for Your Tacoma
Leveling Kit vs. Lift Kit: Choosing the Right Suspension Upgrade for Your Tacoma
Posted by Chris Groote on 2/11/2025 to
Informative Articles
The Toyota Tacoma is a powerhouse of reliability and versatility, whether you’re navigating daily commutes, hauling gear, or venturing off-road. For owners looking to enhance their truck’s capabilities and aesthetics, suspension upgrades are often the first modification considered. However, modern trucks like the Tacoma come with complexities that demand careful planning to ensure a successful upgrade.
When deciding between a leveling kit and a suspension lift kit, it’s essential to weigh the benefits of each option and consider the unique challenges of today’s independent front suspension (IFS) systems. Unlike the solid axle setups of older vehicles, such as the classic CJ-7 Jeep your dad may have tinkered with, modern suspension systems require precision and attention to detail. Let’s break down these options, discuss the challenges, and explore how to choose the right upgrade for your Tacoma.

Bronco Upgrades, Day One: Tires That Tame Every Terrain
Bronco Upgrades, Day One: Tires That Tame Every Terrain
Posted by Chris Groote on 2/3/2025 to
Informative Articles
There’s something magical about your first day with your Ford Bronco—whether it’s a brand-new model straight from the dealership or a late-model beauty you’ve been dreaming about for years. The fresh paint gleams under the sun, and the unmistakable hum of the engine invites adventure. But before you head out on your maiden voyage, there’s one upgrade that every Bronco owner should consider on Day One: tires. Swapping your Bronco’s factory or worn tires for a set tailored to your lifestyle and driving needs can transform your vehicle from capable to unstoppable.
Over the next few months, we’re going to explore some of the best mods for that first day, and while there are far more used Broncos on the market than new ones, we’re creating this series for any new Bronco owner.
So, why tires? Well, for starters, they’re your Bronco’s first and most essential point of contact with the world. They dictate everything from handling and comfort to traction and safety. Chances are, the tires on your “new” Bronco are fine, or have a bit of wear, but neither is optimized for specialized tasks like rock crawling, deep mudding, or snowy trails (Or, let’s be honest, giving you the stance you really want). Replacing them with aftermarket tires on Day One ensures your Bronco is equipped to tackle the challenges you’ll face and sets the foundation for all future modifications.

F150 Raptor and Raptor R – Is This Truck Worth $110K?
F150 Raptor and Raptor R – Is This Truck Worth $110K?
Posted by Chris Groote on 1/31/2025 to
Informative Articles
Since Ford introduced the
Raptor
as a high-end performance and off road package, it’s struggled with the “performance” side of things. Yes, it’s a 6,000-pound truck, and yes, it’s designed for off road capability, but the fact is, most Raptors (and most trucks) spend 99.9% of their lifetimes on pavement. More than a few Raptor owners have been reminded that “performance” on the trail and that on the street are very different.
So it was really only a matter of time before Ford decided to up the ante on the Raptor’s performance, and the Raptor R, with 700 horsepower to the wheels, is not only a great off road rig, it’s also truly fast truck.
0-60 times in the mid-three second range, and a quarter mile time in the low 12 seconds is serious performance in a straight line, and while that might not be a big deal for some, it’s noteworthy.
The Ford F-150 Raptor and Raptor R represent the pinnacle of off-road engineering, blending capability, performance, and rugged style in two incredible packages. But with the Raptor R commanding a premium of nearly $30,000 over the standard Raptor, many enthusiasts are left asking: is it worth the extra cost? Let’s break down the key differences between these two trucks and help you decide which is the better choice for your needs.

Breaking Down the F150 Tremor

The Ford F-150 Tremor: a name that conjures images of rugged trails, off-road challenges, and a truck that's ready to tackle it all. Here at Stage 3 Motorsports, we built one up a few years ago for overlanding, and we loved it. Well built, smartly designed, and it was obvious the engineers on the Tremor development team had done their homework to produce a great truck for off road adventures. But how does it stack up against a standard 4WD F-150? Is it worth the extra cost, or can you build a comparable off-road machine with the help of Stage 3 Motorsports? Let’s break it down and help you decide whether the Tremor package fits your needs or if building your own off-road rig makes more sense.

The Unsung Hero of Engine Performance: Air Oil Separators for EcoBoost and Coyote Engines
The Unsung Hero of Engine Performance: Air Oil Separators for EcoBoost and Coyote Engines
Posted by Chris Groote on 1/23/2025 to
In-Depth Review
When it comes to protecting your Ford engine and ensuring peak performance, the Air Oil Separator (AOS) often doesn’t get the attention it deserves. For turbocharged EcoBoost engines, an Air Oil Separator is almost a necessity. While naturally aspirated 5.0 and 5.2 Coyote motors may also see some benefits, the advantages are particularly pronounced for forced induction setups. Let’s explore why these small but mighty devices matter, focusing primarily on EcoBoost engines.

Building Your Overlanding Dream Rig
Building Your Overlanding Dream Rig
Posted by Chris Groote on 1/17/2025 to
In-Depth Review
Overlanding has surged in popularity, and enthusiasts are now discovering that nearly any truck can become the perfect platform for adventure—especially if you choose a truck with the right foundation. Enter our
2014 Ford F-150 Tremor
, which we built up for overlanding from the original idea as a performance-focused street truck with its turbocharged
3.5L EcoBoost
engine and (in our case) less spacious single cab layout, the truth is, though, when it comes to overlanding, sometimes the less optimal truck can be the best choice, IF you plan it well. There are always options and alternatives to traditional overlanding platforms.
At Stage 3 Motorsports, we took our short-wheelbase Tremor and transformed it into a capable overlanding rig, proving that even a truck initially marketed for on-road performance can shine off the beaten path. If you’re considering a late-model Tremor (or any other single cab) for your next build, let our project serve as your roadmap to creating a trail-ready vehicle that’s practical, reliable, and
adventure-ready
.

Breathing New Life into the 2019 Ford Ranger: An Ideal Project Truck
Breathing New Life into the 2019 Ford Ranger: An Ideal Project Truck
Posted by Chris Groote on 1/14/2025 to
Before you Go
When the 2019 Ford Ranger hit the market, it marked a strong return for Ford’s midsize truck lineup. There were some great options, like the 2.3L EcoBoost engine, 10-speed automatic transmission, and the FX4 Off-Road package, it was celebrated for its blend of power, efficiency, and off-road prowess. Fast forward to 2025, and these trucks have now gained some age and mileage—and that’s a good thing. Why? Because their price point has become far more accessible, making them an ideal choice for enthusiasts looking to build a capable, versatile, and downright good-looking project truck, whether as a daily or a weekend cruiser.
The great thing is, with the passing of time, the bugs have all been worked out of the “new” Ranger, and its a great foundation for a project truck. Let’s dig in to some maintenance and reliability considerations to keep in mind, and review how Stage 3 Motorsports’ 2019 Ranger build offers inspiration for your own transformation.

Hunting Rig Reality: Building and Maintaining a Truck That Gets the Job Done
Hunting Rig Reality: Building and Maintaining a Truck That Gets the Job Done
Posted by Chris Groote on 1/13/2025 to
In-Depth Review
When Stage 3 Motorsports introduced the First Lite 2020 F150 Hunting Rig Build, it was more than a showcase of custom upgrades. It was a blueprint for crafting a capable, reliable vehicle tailored for hunting’s unique challenges. While many admired its features, such as lift kits, lighting enhancements, and storage solutions, not everyone has – or wants – a newer rig with a bank note on it to bounce around in the outback. The simple reality is that most hunters rely on older, high-mileage trucks for a lot of reasons, and cost is absolutely one of them.
And the simple fact is, the Ford F150 can be found for sale everywhere, and with just a few tweaks from Stage 3 Motorsports, it can do everything you ever need in the field.
