We planned from the very beginning to transform our 2012 Expedition into a tough, capable trail truck, but to do that, it needed the tires and suspension that were right for the job. We got our big SUV up higher in the air using a leveling kit, before adding 34" tall tires. After that we bolted on performance struts all around to help maintain some ride comfort and finish off our suspension overhaul.
ReadyLift 3" Front & 2" Rear Spacer Lift Kit
First, we had to get this truck sitting higher in order to clear the tires we had in mind. We turned to ReadyLift and their 3" Front 2" Rear SST Lift/Level Kit. ReadyLift's Kit consists of a set of four strut spacers for all four corners of your Expedition. The two front spacers increase ride height by 3" , while the two rear spacers add roughly 2" which provides a nice bump up in height while leaving enough rake for towing and hauling. Bilstein 4600 Front Shocks
Bilstein 4600 Shocks
With a destiny of use and abuse in store for our 2012 Expedition both on the road and off of it, we needed something a bit more heavy duty than the factory strut assemblies and something that provided a better ride than the 60,000 mile factory dampers. Bilstein's Front 4600 and Rear 4600 Strut Assemblies came to our rescue. Bilstein's monotube 4600 series strut assemblies provide improved damping performance both on and off the road and helped to greatly reduce our Expedition's body roll while making it ride clean and mean. Fuel ANZA Wheels 18x9"
NOT FOR SALE: Unfortunately this Fuel Anza wheel has been discontinued and is no longer available
With the ReadyLift Leveling/Lift Kit giving us extra clearance, and the Bilstein 4600s able to handle much more aggressive applications than the stock strut assemblies, it was time to swap out the boring factory wheels and tires for something better. For the wheels, we went with a set of 18x9" Fuel Anzas with a Gunmetal finish and 01mm offset. The Gunmetal was an almost perfect match to our Expedition's paint, and the more aggressive offset gave our 'Dish a much tougher-looking stance than the high offset factory wheels. Nitto Ridge Grappler Hybrid Radial Tire
For tires, we wanted something that could rip around nicely off-road but was still fairly tame on-road. Fitting both criteria was the Nitto 295/70R18 Ridge Grappler. The Ridge Grappler is Nitto's Hybrid Tire and offers up off-road traction that's just short of a true mud terrain with on-road manners and ride quality that's more in line with a true all-terrain. Plus, at just over 34" tall and 12" wide with an aggressive sidewall and tread pattern, they helped make our Expedition look absolutely awesome. Definitely no complaints from us! Power Stop Z36 Extreme Truck & Tow Complete Brake Kit
Having big, beefy, off road tires means better traction on the trails, but it also means more weight to slow down when you hit the brakes. We grabbed a PowerStop Z36 Extreme Truck & Tow Complete Brake Kit for our Expedition build to wrangle in the added weight and ensure that our truck stops as well as it starts. This complete braking system comes with a full set of Power Stop's legendary rotors that are combined with Power Stop's excellent Z36 Extreme truck and towing brake pads that give you increased stopping power and reduce fade.
