Stage 3's SCT X4 Tuning Guide and Troubleshooting

SCT's X4 device is a powerful tool that can have your truck's 5-Star custom tunes uploaded and going on your truck in practically no time. Still, where to start and how to get your 5-Star tubes loaded into your truck can be a doozy, so we put together this guide to help you out with what we need and what you need to do to get your 5-Star Custom Tunes loaded onto your truck when using an SCT X4 device.

How to Tune your Truck with an SCT X4 Device

After you order your tuner, you are sent a "blank" tuner without any custom tunes. After your tuner arrives, you'll need to hook it into your truck and get your ECU Strategy Code. Owners of 2.7L EcoBoost F150s and F250 and F350 Powerstrokes will also need to get their SWPN#. Once you have that information, head over to our Custom Tune Information Form and fill out all of our required information. After you submit the form, your information is automatically sent to 5-Star and Stage 3. 5-Star create your tunes in roughly one to two business days. Once the tunes are created, you'll be sent a link to our Google Drive Account where you'll be able to download. Download the tunes' .cef files to your computer and use your updated SCT software from SCT's website to upload the tunes to your tuner. Please be aware that SCT's devices and software are only compatible with Microsoft Windows computers, and will not work with Mac OS X, Linux, or other operating systems. Once the tunes are in the tuner, you can then tune your truck. If we find that your truck is behind on its latest TSB strategy updates, we may require you to have your TSB updates performed at your dealership of choice. Read our TSB Update blog post. Stage 3's 5-Star Custom Tuning Step-by-Step:
1. Place your order for 5-Star's Custom Tunes
2. Stage 3 sends you a "blank" tuner
3. Hook the tuner into your truck and pull its ECU strategy code
4. Fill out our online tune form with the information from your truck and its strategy code
5. If your truck has Ford's latest strategy updates, we'll forward your information over to 5-Star and get your tunes created
6. Once 5-Star creates your tunes, they'll be uploaded to our Google Drive account, and a link will be sent to you.
7. Download 5-Star's tunes to your tuning device using SCT's Device Updater Software
8. Now load your 5-Star Custom Tune of choice into your F150

Common X4 Issues:

Being a piece of hardware combined with a good amount of software, as well as the fact that the X4 has to communicate with several different computers at any given time, there's bound to be a few issues. Here are some of the most common problems folks run into when using SCT's X4.

My computer won't recognize my X4.

SCT's Device Updater Software can't find my X4.

I can't see the entire Device Updater Screen.
  • If it looks like your device updater screen is cut off, your likely problem is your computer's DPI or display item size. The quick fix is to search either "DPI" or "Item Size" in your Windows Control Panel and reduce the size down to 100% or lower, until the entire device updater screen is visible.

My X4 does not recognize my truck.
  • This is generally caused by the X4 having outdated firmware pre-installed. Use your Device Updater Software to update the X4's firmware to its latest version.

My X4 throws a 110xx Error Code when trying to tune the truck.
  • This is usually caused by a mismatch in firmware between the SCT software that was used to create the tunes and the firmware on the device. Updating the device's firmware with SCT's Device Updater can usually solve the problem. However, if the problem persists, SCT will have to "brute force" a firmware update, and you'll need to call them directly at 407-774-2447.

I loaded a tune into my truck, but it only took a few seconds, and I don't feel a difference.
  • What happened is that the X4 didn't actually load a tune into your truck . The most common cause of this issue is that there is either a "0" or a "No" set in your TPMS line on the adjustable options menu. Try putting a value of 1 or greater in the TPMS line and try loading the tune again.
