Install Guide: 2004-2014 F150 BDS Fox Shocks on our 2012 F150 EcoBoost FX4!

With our 2012 F150 EcoBoost FX4 Project Truck up on a towering 8" lift provided by combining a Zone Off-Road Lift Kit with a set of Pro Comp Add-a-Leafs, the Zone rear shocks that came standard with the kit were pushed past the point of being useful. That's why we grabbed a pair of 2009-2014 F150 BDS FOX 2.0 Rear Shocks for 6" or higher lift kits for our truck to get both improved performance and more articulation ability. The good news is that the BDS FOX Shocks are just as easy to install as a set of stock replacement shocks, making them an extremely painless upgrade for anyone that wants to get a little bit more out of their F150's 6" (or taller) suspension lift kit.

Install Guide: 2011-2014 F150 EcoBoost aFe Hot-Side Intercooler Tubes

The twin turbochargers on the 2011 to 2014 F150 EcoBoost are the big reason why those F150s make so much power, but there's still some more performance to be found by upgrading some of the core components of your F150's turbocharger system. One of those are the hot side tubes leading from the turbo compressor outlets to your F150's intercooler. The stock tubes are fairly small and have a ton of bends that restrict their flow, which is why aFe developed these 2011 to 2014 F150 Hot-Side Intercooler Tubes to give your truck an overall bump in performance. The tubes greatly improve airflow to the intercooler and reduce back pressure, adding performance especially when tuned. Given that our 2012 F150 EcoBoost FX4 Project Truck was rolling around with a ton of extra weight and 37" tires, we decided to get aFe's Hot-Side tubes installed to get all the performance we could get.

Install Guide: 2009-2015 F150 aFe Transmission Pan on our 2012 F150 EcoBoost FX4!

We here at Stage 3 Motorsports definitely throw our vehicles around more than the average bear, and while we don't do that much towing, we did make the executive decision to add a 2009 to 2015 F150 aFe Machined Transmission Pan to our 2012 F150 EcoBoost FX4 Project Truck, mostly out of concern that we would wend up damaging the stock one sooner rather than later. aFe's pan is made out of cast aluminum an has machined cooling fins which lowers transmission temperatures while being much stronger than stock. Most impressively, the pan increases transmission fluid capacity by a whopping 7 quarts over stock which further improves cooling. Install was surprisingly simple, though also extraordinarily messy thanks to the lack of a drain plug on the factory transmission pan. Still, it was all pretty painless, and the end result looks and feels like a massive improvement.

Install Guide: AMP Research Power Steps on our 2012 F150 EcoBoost FX4!

The AMP Research Powered Side Steps for the 2009 to 2014 F150s are some of the most handy things you can possibly put on your truck, especially if you're running a full suspension lift or a taller front coilover and rear block combination. That being said, AMP's steps are pretty intimidating both for their price point, and the fact that powered steps with motors and moving parts must make for a nightmare of an install. The bit about the install is, surprisingly, incorrect. the AMP Research Side steps are actually extremely straightforward to get up and running on your truck. While they're a bit more complicated than a set of bolt-on side steps, AMP gives you everything you need to get the job done with practically no hassles.

Just Added: 2015 Mustang GT Flowmaster Cat-Back Exhaust Kits!

Our dear friends over at Flowmaster were ready to pounce on the 2015 Mustang GTs, and they've done so in high style by developing a pair of aggressive cat-back exhaust systems so that you can get an awesome new sound and exhaust note coming out of your Pony's 5.0L Coyote V8. The first is Flowmaster's classic American Thunder Cat-Back Kit, which adds an impressive, deep, and old-school muscle car sound without adding a ton of drone or being too overwhelming. The second is Flowmaster's Outlaw Cat-Back Kit which was designed from the ground up to be one of the loudest and most aggressive cat-back systems available for the 2015 Mustangs. You can't really go wrong when it comes to adding a Flowmaster kit to a Mustang, and either one of these systems are great choices for taking your Pony build to the next level.

2015 Mustang Air Lift Air Ride Suspension System Available for Pre-Order!

Air Lift Performance was all over the 2015 Mustangs, and they had an Air Lift kit out and ready to go for the new S550 2015 Mustang lineup before we could blink. That being said, there weren't a ton of pictures of the system actually installed on a 2015 Pony – at least until MRT brought their TKO EcoBoost Mustang to SEMA. MRT managed to get their hands on the first of what is bound to be many Air Lift Air Ride Suspension Systems for the 2015 Mustangs for their SEMA car, and put it to fantastic use. The aggressive body style and angular lines of the 2015 Mustangs look absolutely stunning when dumped straight to the ground, and we here at Stage 3 are already salivating at the thought of throwing a 2015 Mustang Air Lift Air Ride System on our very own 2015 "EcoStang" project car when it arrives.

While the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 made its triumphant return as the premium engine option for the 2015 F150s, there were a lot of changes made to the truck, engine bay, and other components of the 2015 F150s that required many aftermarket components to be redesigned. The good news is that our friends over at aFe Power are on the ball, and have recently announced a ton of new 2015 F150 3.5L EcoBoost performance parts that will get your truck more power, a great sound, and a whole new look so that you can start your custom 2015 F150 build off on the right foot. aFe now has 2015 F150 3.5L EcoBoost cold air intakes, cat-back exhaust kits, intercooler system upgrades, downpipes and other parts that can help turn your 3.5L EcoBoost 2015 F150 into one of the meanest things on or off the road.

Install Guide: 2007-2014 F150 Tow Mirrors with Puddle Lights on our 2007 F150 Project Truck!

Prepping your 2007 to 2014 F150 for some serious towing or hauling requires you to actually see what's going on behind your truck, and if you don't have the optional (and very expensive) factory tow package, then you're going to need to invest in some aftermarket tow mirrors. We here at Stage 3 carry a set of F150 tow mirrors with puddle lights that are bolt-on replacements for the standard, stock F150 mirrors ad give your truck a tough look and greatly improved rearward visibility. These mirrors are extremely easy to install, and we managed to get it done in practically no time with just a few basic hand tools and not much more than 15 minutes of our time. Basically, these mirrors are a clean, easy upgrade that can help finish up your truck build, just like our very own 2007 F150 5.4L XLT Project Truck.

[UPDATED]New 2011-2014 F150 EcoBoost "EcoSleeper" Cat-Back Kits from MBRP & Stage 3!

Maybe it's just age getting to us at long last (we may even start telling kids to stay off our lawn), but the last thing we here at Stage 3 want in our lives as of late is eardrum-shatteringly loud 2011 to 2014 F150 EcoBoost in our stable. That's why we hit up our friends over at MBRP to come up with a whisper-quiet F150 EcoBoost cat-back exhaust system that still provides a hint of extra performance and some aftermarket flair without generating much of an exhaust tone at all. Well, MBRP outdid themselves and came up with four different "EcoSleeper" cat-back system variations so that you can find one to fit your F150 EcoBoost's styling theme or your budget. Each one of these kits comes with a new performance muffler and an additional resonator built into its inlet tubing, which keeps exhaust volume down and eliminates drone at cruising. These kits are the perfect way to add some extra flash and pep to your 2011 to 2014 F150 EcoBoost without getting an annoying sound.

Rigid Industries 40" E-Series vs. 40" E2 Off-Road LED Light Bars

Just what the specific difference between the Rigid Industries E-Series and E2 families of off-road LED light bars is probably one of the most-asked questions that we here at Stage 3 Motorsports get when it comes to Rigid's LED light bar lineup. We got the question often enough that we decided to grab a 40" E-Series Combo LED Light Bar and a 40" E2 Series LED Light Bar and put them side-by-side and go over the subtle, yet very important differences in their designs to see which one would work best for you and and your off-road vehicle of choice.

UPR Instructions for their Low-Profile Clean Side Separator for Dual-Valve Cans

Our good friends over at UPR have updated their pretty excellent 2011 to 2014 F150 EcoBoost Dual-Valve Catch Cans with Clean Side Separators with a new clean side separator design that installs directly onto the driver's side PCV port instead of the oil cap neck to give your bay a cleaner look. While this update is a "good thing" at face value, UPR may or may not have instructions for the older CSS design and stuck them with the new catch can kits. Luckily the change was horribly drastic, and there's really only one change in the overall install process. Anyway, here's a link to UPR's updated PDF instructions, and a little explanation below of the differences between the old and new versions of the kit.

Stage 3's Prescott, Arizona Off-Road Day!

There's nothing better than great weather and the great outdoors, especially when you have some seriously built project trucks to screw around with. There's also nothing worse than not being invited on your coworkers' grand adventure, and then hearing how great it was. I'm not bitter. Not even little... Anyway, a few of the guys here at Stage 3 loaded up our 2012 F150 EcoBoost FX4 Project Truck and our 2007 F150 4WD 5.4L XLT Project Truck and headed up north to Prescott National Forest outside of Prescott, Arizona, for a little off-roading, photo shooting, and some testing out of some the new gear on both the trucks and on the Stage 3 Website. Luckily, they came back with good images and some insight into some of our newest performance parts and hardware.

Install Guide: 2011-2014 F150 EcoBoost ADD Stealth Paneled Front Bumper on our 2012 F150 EcoBoost FX4!

One of the most aggressive, most noticeable, and most helpful modifications for a dedicated off-road F150 is getting an off-road bumper. Given that we're going full-on loony with our 2012 F150 EcoBoost FX4 Project Truck build, we decided to invest in a little something-something from our cross-town neighbors over at Addictive Desert Designs (ADD). We grabbed ourselves one of ADD's awesome 2011 to 2014 F150 EcoBoost Stealth Front Bumpers to help keep our truck protected off-road, give it an awesome look, and serve as the base for a bunch of future off-road LED lighting. Basically, the bumper was everything we could ever want, and when it arrived, we were like kids on Christmas Day. In any case, the bumper was totally awesome, and was perfect for our aggressive truck.

Install Guide: 2009-2013 F150 F150Lifts BOSS Coilovers on our 2012 F150 EcoBoost FX4!

While there's a few lower-cost coilover kits available on the market, there's not much out there that can hit a full 3" of extra front lift while keeping ride quality butter smooth. The F150lifts BOSS coilovers are the exception, and offer 0-3" of extra ride height while giving your truck a silky smooth ride on the street and improved performance off-pavement. Now, our 2012 F150 EcoBoost FX4 Project truck was already sitting pretty with its Zone 6" Suspension Lift kit, however, we here at Stage 3 can't leave well enough alone, so our dastardly plot for getting more front ride height involved swapping out our Zone Kit's lifted strut assembly with the Boss coilovers attached to pair of Pro Comp strut spacers meant for one of their lift kits. While this install basically shows you how to turn a 6" lift into an 8" lift, you can still get a good idea on how to install the BOSS coilovers on truck with stock ride height. You'll just have a heck of a lot less hassles than we did. For those of you who want to turn your 6" lift kit up a notch or two, this is basically what you're in for. Overall, we got the job done, but install wasn't quite as easy as simple strut/coilover swap. The end result is still super-impressive.

Install Guide: 2009-2014 F150 Pro Comp Add-a-Leaf Kit on our 2012 F150 EcoBoost FX4!

We here at Stage 3 aren't very good at leaving anything alone for any given period of time, so we made an executive decision to add even more height onto our 2012 F150 EcoBoost FX4 Project Truck on top of its current Zone 6" Suspension Lift Kit. The first step of the process was to bring up the rear of the truck, and to that end we grabbed a 2009 to 2014 F150 Pro Comp Add-a-Leaf Kit to get roughly 1" to 1.5" of rear lift. The Add-a-Leaf kit consists of two, new leaf springs that install into your truck's leaf pack to provide some extra ride height without compromising ride quality or towing capacity. Install is pretty basic, though getting the stud holes in the springs to all line back up while compressing them can be a bit tricky. Still, this job is totally doable as a DIY. After install, our truck gained about 1.5" of ride height which should settle down a bit after the springs are broken in, but we achieved our goal and our ride is still butter smooth.

We here at Stage 3 are all over the 2015 Mustangs, and we've put in our order for a brand spanking new 2015 Mustang with a 2.3L EcoBoost I4! This base EcoBoost Mustang is coming with a 6-speed manual transmission (of course) and a nice and ostentatious Competition Orange paint job that is sure to grab some attention. We opted for the base model EcoBoost car, given that we're going to be throwing everything and the kitchen sink at this car, including a full host of bolt-on performance parts, suspension components, exhaust parts, and whatever else we can find before topping it all off with aggressive custom tuning.

ICON Vehicle Dynamics Facility Tour by Stage 3 Motorsports

A trip out to the Los Angeles just wouldn't be complete without stopping by ICON Vehicle Dynamics out in Riverside. ICON had invited us out for a tour many moons ago, and we finally squeezed in some time to swing by and get a first-hand look at their assembly and testing facilities. While we've been a little disappointed with some of the backorders and delays for some of the ICON products that we know and love for our beloved F150s, SVT Raptors, and Super Dutys, it's not for lack of trying. ICON's popularity and, by extension, the demand for their awesome and high-quality suspension parts has absolutely exploded over the last year. While there's been a few struggles, ICON is winning the war, and they're churning out suspension hardware at a masterful pace.

We here at Stage 3 have done business with the folks over at Banks Power for a long while now, and last week, Bill and Dylan got the opportunity to take a tour of Banks' Headquarters out in Azusa, California, east of Los Angeles. We got the full tour of their extremely impressive manufacturing and testing facilities, saw some of their upcoming F150 EcoBoost products, and even got to meet the man that started it all and who still puts in 10-hour days at 70 years old – Gale Banks himself. Dylan and Bill got the royal treatment, and we want to thank everyone over at Banks Power for letting us come in and poke around.

2011-2014 F150 3.5L EcoBoost Oil Catch Can Breakdown

With the release of the newest variation of UPR's oil catch can, there are now just enough catch can options out on the market to make things confusing enough that we here at Stage 3 should do a writeup on the subject. The good news is there's only a few different types of catch cans across all of the brands available on the market, so breaking them down isn't overly difficult. We'll use UPR's catch cans as an example. In any case, here's our brief overview of all the current catch can options available here at Stage 3.

[UPDATED]F150 Off-Roading at Wickenburg's Box Canyon on the Hassayampa River!

With both our 2007 F150 5.4L XLT Project Truck and our 2012 F150 EcoBoost FX4 Project Truck successfully lifted and on off-road tires, we decided to head up to Wickenburg, Arizona to look for some trouble. That trouble was the Box Canyon Trail on the Hassayampa River. While bone dry for the majority of the year, Arizona's monsoon season is in full swing, and the off-road gods blessed us with plenty of standing water, mud, silt, and other fun terrain that we could throw our truck's around in. The 2007 F150 is rocking one of Zone's 6" Suspension Lift Kits and has 20x10" Fuel Lethal wheels with a -24mm offset with Mickey Thompson Deegan 38 35x12.50" tires. The 2012 EcoBoost FX4 likewise has a Zone 6" Suspension Lift Kit and is rolling around on 20x9" Fuel Trophy wheels with a 01mm offset wrapped in 37x12.50" Mickey Thompson ATZ Baja P3s. Needless to say, we had a good time. Make sure to check out all of our photos after the jump!

Install Guide: 2009-2013 F150 4WD Zone 6" Lift Kit on our 2012 F150 FX4 EcoBoost!

We're pretty big fans of huge lift kits, and we really can't just leave well enough alone. Even though our 2012 F150 EcoBoost FX4 had a set of Rancho QuickLifts and Rancho rear shocks when we first picked it up, we needed something a little more capable and something more massive for our truck. Our friends over at Zone were kind enough to give us a lift – literally – by getting us one of their awesome 6" Suspension Lift Kits for the 2009 to 2013 F150 4WDs. The kit provides a huge increase in ride height and wheel clearance, easily giving us the ability to squeeze on a full set of 37x12.50" Mickey Thompson ATZ tires wrapped around 20x9" Fuel Trophy Wheels with a 01mm offset. While our 2012 F150 EcoBoost was already looking pretty mean, this kit and wheel and tire combination brought it up to the next level. Just like the Zone lift kits we installed on our 2007 F150 and 2005 F150, this 6" kit was an excellent balance of quality, fitment, durability, and price and has made our truck one of the toughest things around.

Install Guide: 2004-2008 F150 ProComp ProRunner Rear Shocks for 6" Lifts on our 2004 F150 5.4L Project Truck!

While the 5.4L Triton V8 under the hood of our 2004 F150 4WD XLT Project Truck is still running strong with 170,000 miles on the clock, the vehicle it happened to be in is very tired. No where was that more evident than in the rear shocks. Now, that truck had it's 6" Pro Comp lift kit on when we first picked it up. We don't know how long it had been on there, but given that the Pro Comp ES9000s weren't doing much of anything but taking up space, we're guessing that kit was installed fairly early in its very long life. In any case, it was time for a change just to get back a decent street ride, so we stuck with Pro Comp and grabbed a set of their 2004 to 2008 Pro Runner Series Rear Shocks for 6" Lifted Applications. The Pro Runners are bit more heavy duty and durable than the baseline white-body ES9000s, so we were pretty pumped to get them installed and have our truck running clean and mean once again.

Install Guide: 2011-2014 F150 EcoBoost Banks Ram-Air® Intake Install on our 2012 F150 EcoBoost FX4!

Banks is one of the biggest names in the diesel truck performance world, and while they've dabbled in a few gas-powered trucks here and there – most notably with their exhaust kits – but they've finally put in a bigger effort with the F150 EcoBoosts with this awesome Ram-Air® intake system. This drop-in cold air intake fits all 2011 to 2014 F150 EcoBoost trucks thanks to its MAF and MAP sensor adapters and comes standard with a full air box assembly with a front air duct, deep-pleated Banks Lifetime Air Filter, a one-piece inlet tube assembly, PCV adapter, and high-quality silicone couplers and clamps. The kit is 100% complete out of the box and pretty impressive to look at, especially when its installed. While not as radical as the aFe Stage 2 kits that we've previously installed, the Banks kit looked pretty snazzy and we were pretty pleased with the end result on our 2012 F150 EcoBoost FX4 Project Truck.

Stage 3 Motorsports has ordered a 2015 F150 3.5L EcoBoost!

We've been waiting for our opportunity to pounce on a new 2015 F150 ever since they were announced, and now that time has come. We here at Stage 3 Motorsports have just placed our order for a 2015 F150 with a 3.5L EcoBoost V6. The truck's coming with a 145" wheelbase with a SuperCrew cab and a 5.5ft bed. The paint color will be Race Red, and we're planning on going with a black on red color scheme once again since it looked oh, so good on our 2012 F150 5.0L. Thanks to Ford's revised submodel/package scheme, what we ended up ordering was a Lariat with a 501A Equipment Package that was also paired up with Ford's FX4 Appearance Package and Trailer Tow Package. Basically, we stacked packages on top of packages in order to get what we needed. The truck will look more or less like the image below...right before we bastardize it into something even more awesome. Unfortunately, we've got a good bit of waiting to do. The 2015 F150s aren't expected to land en masse until late December or January, meaning we probably won't see our 2015 F150 until mid- or late January.

Install Guide: Recon 60" Xtreme Scanning LED Tailgate Bar on our 2012 F150 EcoBoost FX4 Project Truck!

There has yet to be a project truck here at Stage 3 Motorsports that hasn't been graced by the goodies our friends over at Recon Lighting manufacture with gusto. While our 2012 F150 EcoBoost FX4 received headlights from elsewhere, and our plans for the taillights and third brake light are currently up in the air, we did grab us one of Recon's 60" Xtreme LED Tailgate Light Bars. Now, we've put Recon's standard 60" bar on several of our trucks, but this Xtreme bar is a whole different animal. Each Recon Xtreme tailgate bar features red running lights and white reverse lights, but also comes with scanning amber turn signal LEDs that look totally awesome when you throw on your truck's blinker. While all that sounded pretty awesome on paper, we wanted to get one of these bad boys on a truck to see it in action for ourselves.

Install Guide: 2004-2014 F150 DeeZee Tailgate Assist on our 2005 F150 Project Truck!

Trying to handle your F150's tailgate with your hands full generally means pulling the handle and letting it come down to a crashing and clattering stop that neither looks nor sounds very pretty. That's the main reason that the DeeZee F150 Tailgate Assist is such a handy little doohickey. The kit basically consists of a small strut and mounting hardware that installs on the driver's side of your truck's tailgate and keeps your tailgate from crashing down by slowly lowering it to a safe, non-life threatening stop. The DeeZee kit is extremely easy to install and comes with everything you need to get the kit on your truck. We only had one fairly minor issue with DeeZee's nutsert, which was solved by using a much more beefy nutsert tool than one provided by DeeZee. Still, installation only took a few minutes, and the tailgate on our 2005 F150 Project Truck is now a smooth operator.
