Breathing New Life into the 2019 Ford Ranger: An Ideal Project Truck

Breathing New Life into the 2019 Ford Ranger: An Ideal Project Truck

When the 2019 Ford Ranger hit the market, it marked a strong return for Ford’s midsize truck lineup. There were some great options, like the 2.3L EcoBoost engine, 10-speed automatic transmission, and the FX4 Off-Road package, it was celebrated for its blend of power, efficiency, and off-road prowess. Fast forward to 2025, and these trucks have now gained some age and mileage—and that’s a good thing. Why? Because their price point has become far more accessible, making them an ideal choice for enthusiasts looking to build a capable, versatile, and downright good-looking project truck, whether as a daily or a weekend cruiser.

The great thing is, with the passing of time, the bugs have all been worked out of the “new” Ranger, and it's a great foundation for a project truck. Let’s dig into some maintenance and reliability considerations to keep in mind, and review how our Stage 3 Motorsports’ 2019 Ranger build still can offer inspiration for your own transformation.

Why the 2019 Ranger Makes a Great Project Truck

The 2019 Ford Ranger was designed with capability in mind. Its turbocharged 2.3L EcoBoost engine delivers a potent mix of power and efficiency, making it a strong performer both on and off the road. Paired with the 10-speed automatic transmission, it offers smooth shifts and adaptability across various terrains. Add in the FX4 Off-Road package—which includes off-road-tuned suspension, skid plates, and an electronic locking rear differential—and Ford had a winner right off the lot for handling rugged conditions.

As these trucks hit the used market with more mileage, they become an even more attractive option. While they’re generally reliable, their age and usage do bring some maintenance considerations to the table.

Maintenance and Reliability Considerations

Like any vehicle, a high-mileage 2019 Ranger will require attention to ensure it stays road- and trail-ready. Here are some key points to keep in mind:

  • Transmission Behavior: The 10-speed automatic transmission, while innovative, has faced reports of rough or erratic shifting. If you’re purchasing a used Ranger, ensure the transmission has been properly maintained and consider having it checked by a professional. Ford has issued software updates to address some of these issues, so make sure they’re up to date.
  • Engine Performance: The 2.3L EcoBoost engine is a robust performer, but like any turbocharged engine, it benefits from regular oil changes and high-quality fluids. Some earlier EcoBoost models in other vehicles had head gasket concerns, so monitoring coolant levels and engine temperature is wise. “Most” of those were sorted by the 2011-2012 model years, but understanding what you’re getting under the hood of your new-to-you Ranger is a good thing.
  • Electrical Systems: As electronic-heavy as new vehicles have become, the Ranger is no different. Always be aware the electrical gremlins, particularly with features like the Auto Start-Stop system or infotainment connectivity, can arise, and not always because a truck has been abused. These issues are often minor but worth troubleshooting if they arise.

  • Rust Prevention: If the truck has been driven in areas with heavy snow or salted roads, check the undercarriage for rust and take action with protective treatments to extend its lifespan.

With a little preventative maintenance, Rangers have proven they can deliver years of reliable performance.

But let’s be real – you’re not reading this article to learn this, you’re reading this article to see what you can do with it.

Drawing Inspiration from Stage 3 Motorsports’ Build

A few years ago, the Stage 3 Motorsports team undertook an ambitious project with a brand-new Ford Ranger, and we transformed it into a capable and eye-catching truck. This build served as a perfect example of what’s possible, and today, it’s even more relevant as the Rangers have come down in price and availability is way better.

Our build included:

  • Fox Stage 1 Suspension Package: Upgraded coilovers and shocks improved off-road capability while leveling the truck for a more aggressive stance.
  • BF Goodrich KO2 All-Terrain Tires: Paired with Black Rhino Armory Wheels, these tires provided excellent traction and added a rugged aesthetic.
  • Roush Cold Air Intake: This upgrade boosted the engine’s performance, improving throttle response and efficiency.
  • Bed Accessories: A Truxedo rolling tonneau cover and BedRug bed mat made the truck more practical for hauling and protecting gear.

Each of these upgrades can be replicated or adapted for a used Ranger, allowing you to breathe new life into the truck without breaking the bank.

Making the 2019 Ranger Your Own

Transforming a used 2019 Ranger into your ideal project truck is both exciting and accessible. Here are some areas to focus on:

  • Suspension and Tires: If the truck has seen significant use, refreshing the suspension with an upgraded package can drastically improve ride quality and off-road performance. Pair this with all-terrain or mud-terrain tires to handle various conditions.
  • Engine Performance: A cold air intake and upgraded exhaust system can enhance the EcoBoost engine’s power and sound. If the truck is higher mileage, consider tuning it for better throttle response and efficiency.
  • Lighting: Adding LED light bars or upgrading the factory lighting improves visibility for night drives or off-road adventures.
  • Exterior Accessories: Bed racks, tonneau covers, and cargo management systems can increase utility. Skid plates and rocker panel guards provide added protection during off-road excursions.
  • Interior Comforts: Even older trucks can feel new again with seat covers, floor mats, and some smart upgrades to your speakers and adding in a subwoofer.

One of the great things about the 2019 Ranger is the availability of aftermarket parts. From suspension kits to lighting solutions, we’ve built a huge catalog of options at Stage 3 Motorsports to suit your budget and goals. Since these trucks share many components with the global Ranger platform, parts availability is plentiful, keeping costs reasonable.

In our case, we ended up actually building this Ranger up for our trip to SEMA that year, and you can read about it here.
