F150 Side Steps – Drop Steps, Oval Steps & Power Steps for All Cab Sizes

F150 Side Step Types

Like most F150 parts, there's more than a few side steps and types to choose from. The good news is that they can be broken down into a couple of different categories to help narrow down your choices by functionality or budget.

Oval Steps
Oval and tube steps are the most basic type of side steps that you can put on your truck. Similar to the OEM steps in design, Oval steps are generally made out of tubular steel with large step pads built in. There's a bunch of different diameters, finishes, and design variations which gives you a lot to choose from. Oval and tube steps are also on the inexpensive side of the spectrum, which makes them a natural choice if you're on a budget. The only real issue with most tube steps is that they don't make getting in and out of your truck that much easier. Unlike drop-steps and power steps, most tube steps have their step pads on the same plane as the rocker panels, so you're not getting much help when it comes to getting in and out of your truck.

Drop Steps & Rails
Drop steps and rails are the perfect solution if you're looking to get a tough, off-road look and improved access to your F150's cab, especially if it's lifted. These side steps featured steps that are lowered below the plane of the rockers and mounting points, giving you a lower place to step when you're getting in and out of your truck. Many drop steps also feature more rugged designs than OE-style oval steps and give your F150 a bit of extra protection from tough terrain. While drop steps are handy, they do have a couple of drawbacks. First, due to their lower steps, they can cost your truck some amount ground clearance. Secondly, while some drop-steps and rails add protection, they aren't true rock rails and they won't support the full weight of your truck on their pinch weld mounting points. The most they can handle is light bumps and scrapes, but anything more and you're asking for body damage.

Power Steps
Power Steps give you the best of both worlds when it comes to side steps: ground clearance and a clean look when don't need them, and a low step when you do actually need to get in and out of your truck. Power steps tuck clean and flush against your F150 when they're not in use, but feature electric motors that automatically drops them down when one of your doors open. Most power steps have a very low drop, which makes them perfect for F150s running around with tall lifts and big tires. The only real downsides to power steps are their price and their installation. Power steps are on the expensive side of of the spectrum and due to their need for wiring and mounting their motorized arms, installation is a good deal more intensive than other types of side steps. Still, their cost and extra install steps can often be worth it for their awesome functionality.
