Upgrading the cold air intake on your Super Duty is one of the simplest ways to increase airflow, improve throttle response, and get a deeper engine tone under acceleration. But not all intake systems are created equal. Between oiled vs. dry filters and open element vs. enclosed air boxes, the best intake for your truck depends on how you drive, where you drive, and what kind of maintenance you're willing to do.

Oiled vs. Dry Filters: What’s the Difference?

Oiled filters use a multi-layer cotton gauze material that’s treated with specialized oil to trap dust, debris, and contaminants. These filters tend to flow better than dry options and are known for long-term reusability. They're ideal for high-performance applications, especially on tuned trucks or those running other airflow-dependent upgrades like exhausts or turbos.

• Best for: Performance-focused builds, tuned trucks, and owners who don’t mind periodic cleaning and re-oiling.

Dry filters, on the other hand, rely on a synthetic or paper-like media to trap particles without the use of oil. While they may not flow quite as freely as oiled filters, they require less maintenance and pose no risk of over-oiling the MAF sensor: a common concern for diesel owners.

Open Element vs Enclosed Air Boxes: Performance vs Protection

Intakes generally come in two designs: open element or fully enclosed.

Open element designs feature an exposed filter (often shielded by a heat barrier or partial cover) that draws air directly from the engine bay. These systems typically offer maximum airflow and more aggressive engine sound, but they also pull in warmer air under the hood, which can reduce efficiency in hot or high-load conditions.

• Best for: Street-driven performance builds or trucks in mild climates where intake temperatures aren’t a concern.

Enclosed air boxes, by contrast, isolate the filter within a sealed housing that pulls cooler air from outside the engine bay, often through the fender, grille, or factory ducting. This helps keep intake temps low and consistent, which is especially important for towing, heavy-duty use, or trucks that spend a lot of time idling or under load.
