Offset & Backspacing: What They Mean and Why They Matter

Two of the most misunderstood aspects of wheel fitment are offset and backspacing, but they’re critical for ensuring your wheels and tires clear suspension components, fender liners, and brake calipers.

• Offset is measured in millimeters and refers to how far the wheel’s mounting surface is from its centerline. A positive offset tucks the wheel inward (closer to stock), while a negative offset pushes it outward for a wider stance.
• Backspacing is measured in inches and refers to the distance from the mounting surface to the back edge of the wheel. Less backspacing = more clearance between the tire and suspension components.

Most Super Duty lift kits and leveling kits recommend wheels with 4.5" to 5.5" of backspacing or offsets between 0mm and -24mm depending on tire width. If you’re running a 12.50" wide tire, aim for a wheel with -12mm to -24mm offset to prevent rubbing and give your truck a bold, planted look.
