Improved Spark with One Step Colder Heat Range than Stock
When you throw an aggressive tune and a wide range of F150 EcoBoost Performance parts at your very own 3.5L V6, you'll need a few bits of fine tuning to get your EcoBoosted motor running at its best. These NGK Iridium IX spark plugs are a nice upgrade that have a one step lower heat range than OEM for heavily modified and tuned trucks that still feature NGK's legendary reliability and performance. The Iridium IX plugs are built from the ground up to resist corrosion and fouling while providing improved spark, reliability, and versatility over your truck's factory spark plugs. This full set of six iridium spark plugs from NGK are an excellent choice for tuned vehicles that have wore out the welcome of the factory plugs.
High-Quality Iridium Tip and Corrosion-Resistant Design
The NGK Iridium IX spark plugs are named after their .6 mm laser-welded iridium tip that delivers a powerful arc while being highly resistant to corrosion and fouling. The insulator and electrode feature Trivalent metal plating that offers up vastly improved anti-seizure and anti-corrosion properties than traditional spark plugs. These plugs have a tapered electrode that reduces quenching while making regapping extremely simple.

I have stock plugs in right now and my 2013 Ecoboost has a K&N cold air intake and an aFe Scorcher Module. Would these be the plugs I should put in and gap them at .30 or do you recommend something else?
Asked by:
Rob
- 10/7/2014
Generally, you'd only need these colder heat range plugs if you're heavily modified with bolt-ons and fairly aggressive tuning. If you plan on getting more parts and custom tuning down the road, then these plugs would still work. However, you'd probably be better off with
NGK 6509s
in the factory heat range, since your modifications are fairly basic.

Asked by:
TopNotch
- 3/28/2015
Because you're running a tune, you should gap these down to .030", though since your modifications and tuning are fairly basic, you may want to consider using the
NGK 6509s
which are in the factory heat range.

Asked by:
jmerrell
- 7/4/2015
Since you're not custom tuned, you ought to use the
NGK 6509s
or save some cash and use the
Motorcraft SP-534s
. Just make sure they're gapped down to .030" out of the box.

Asked by:
Dave Flint
- 12/5/2015
You should probably stick with the 6509s, if that's the extent of your modifications. In general, you only need to go a step colder when you're using upgraded turbochargers, water-methanol kits, or nitrous.

Asked by:
Jesse
- 6/2/2015
You're probably borderline with the amount of modifications that you have in that you can go either way. Generally, you can stick with the stock heat range, but the colder heat range plugs wouldn't be hurting you at all. Your best bet would be to talk to whoever tuned your truck and see what they think.

I have stock spark plugs in my 2011 Ford F-150 FX-4 supercrew Ecoboost. I took it to the garage cause its missing after you step on it. They fixed the turbos and they said I should change the plugs too. I'm wondering if these are the right ones I'm looking for or not? I don't have any of the extra tuning or parts on my truck, but your products definitely got me interested. Thanks for your help
Asked by:
Mike
- 12/21/2015
If you don't have any other modifications on your truck, and you're not planning on getting aggressive with performance parts here in the near future, then your best bet would be to use either
NGK 6509
or
Motorcraft SP-534
spark plugs which are in the factory heat range, rather than these plugs which have a colder heat range than stock.

Im running a 2011 Eco with a livernoise 93 custom tune, afe cai, and 4" exhaust. My tune claims upwards of 20-22psi of boost, am i in the range of needing the colder plugs or stick with factory? Also, what should they be gaped at for that high of boost?
Asked by:

- 7/27/2015
Colder plugs can help you out a bit, if you are actually getting boost pressures that high. I would try to verify that number, though. Gap should be .030" for tuned applications.

Will these spark plugs work for the Explorer Sport 3.5l Ecoboost? Thank you for all of the help.
Asked by:
Trevor McDaniel
- 3/9/2016
Technically, yes. These spark plugs will work with the 3.5L EcoBoost Explorers. However, just like the F150s, these spark plugs are a heat range colder than stock, and are really meant for use on fairly modified vehicles with aftermarket turbos, water-meth kits, etc. If your Explorer isn't modified or is just running basic bolt-ons and tuning, you'd probably be better off with
NGK's 6509 Spark Plugs
which are in the factory heat range.

Just purchased the Phase 2 package for my 2014 ecoboost. Which plugs should I grab?
Asked by:
Edward Corr
- 3/22/2016
If you're using 5-Star's tuning, they actually recommend using
Motorcraft SP-534s
gapped to a maximum if .030". The better alternative to the 6510s would be the
NGK 6509s
, since your modifications aren't extreme enough to require a colder heat range.

Asked by:
Jason
- 4/13/2016
If that's the current extent of your mods, then you'd likely be better off with the
NGK 6509 Spark Plugs
in the factory heat range. Unless you're adding aftermarket turbochargers and/or water-meth in the near future, you don't really need to drop down in heat range.

?Hey I'm running some heat range 6 iridium tips right now in my truck, I was wondering if bumping up to a 7 or an 8 would help me or hurt me. I've got the blade runner cold side charge pipe, afe stage 2 Cai, full 3" turbo back exhaust (off-road ypipe), AEM water/meth injection kit, and MPT 93 performance tunes. Thanks in advance.
Asked by:
Blake
- 5/20/2016
It really depends on how your truck is running now, and how you have that AEM system set up, but if your truck's running fine, then you probably wouldn't see a huge difference in performance either positive or negative by going to a warmer plug, especially if it's just a single heat range. Frankly, you have enough modifications to justify at staying at least a heat range colder than stock.

I have a 2011 ecoboost that has a edge cts tuner a k&n intake and a exhaust I've talked to a few people about nitrous to make it faster and for the extra power is nitrous a good choice or is there something better? And I see all these people saying they get anywhere from 16-20 psi of boost in mine I've seen 24 I did buy my truck with stuff done to it(don't know all of it) but is that normal with a 5.5 0-60
Asked by:
Teddy
- 8/1/2016
The issue with nitrous on the EcoBoost F150s is that these trucks already push their fuel systems to the limits with just bolt-ons, tuning, and basic turbocharger upgrades, and nitrous requires custom tuning in order to actually work properly, which the Edge CTS doesn't support. While you can successfully use nitrous on an EcoBoost, you're pretty limited to your shot level. Your best would be to call us directly at 1-877-578-2433 so we can get more specific with what's already done to your truck and what other options you have.

Asked by:
Matthew
- 9/12/2016
You could probably do with new plugs that are gapped down to .028" or .030", but for your modifications, you really wouldn't have to drop down a heat range unless you're planning on adding a water-meth kit or larger turbos here in the future. A better choice would probably be the
NGK 6509s
or the
Motorcraft SP-534s
.

Asked by:
Tyler

The 6509s would be a better choice for your modifications. The 6510s are generally reserved for F150s with water-meth injection, nitrous systems, or upgraded turbochargers.

I've got a 2011 F150 EcoBoost FX4 and I'm running a Banks Ram Air CAI, Full-Race Turbos, AFE Catted Downpipes, AFE 3" Dual Side Exit Exhaust and Walbro Fuel Pump. I'll be installing a Full-Race Front Mount Intercooler, Throttle Body Spacer, and Full-Race Freakoboost Radiator when they arrive. I'm also using an SCT X4 tuner with performance tunes from 5-star tuning. The questions are: - Should I use these plugs or the 6509's? - What should they be gapped to? - Should I install a 160 degree thermostat? Thanks
Asked by:
Mark Roote
- 11/6/2016
Since you have turbos, these 6510s would actually be your better bet. You'd still gap them to .028" to .030". While you could also upgrade your truck with a 160 or 170 degree thermostat, it wouldn't be entirely necessary, and you would require revised tuning.

Yep. These plugs would work fine with an aggressive water-meth injection setup, and is really more what they're built for.

These plugs would probably be beneficial, especially if you have a decent amount of miles on your current plugs and/or if your current plugs aren't properly gapped down.

I have a 2011 EB F150 with Cavalli Turbos with turbosmart wastegates and blow off valves, afe stage 2 intake, built motor, exhaust and MPT 93 octane performance tune. Can this plug handle that or is there a better option..?

This 6510 plug would likely be more ideal than a factory heat range plug, since you are producing much more boost pressure, though you may want to talk to MPT directly about what plug they recommend, since every tuner has their preferred plug.

I have a 2014 with only bolt on changes. I got the 6509 plugs. What do i want the gap to be?
Asked by:
Jeremy Peterson
- 8/13/2017
If you're running an aftermarket tune, then the maximum gap should be .030" (though some tuners recommend .028", so you may want to get in touch with your tuner of choice). For a stock tune, we recommend a maximum gap of .032".

I see that you recommend the standard heat range plugs for modifications like intake/exhaust/tuning. Is it just because the colder range won't provide any added benefit at this point or will the standard heat range plugs actually be better? Thanks in advance.
Asked by:
Clint
- 9/16/2017
It's a little bit of both. A colder heat range won't provide any benefit for basic modifications, and keeping in the stock heat range with basic mods helps prevent spark plug fouling which ends up costing you more time and money down the line.

Have you had anyone run a cooler plug than the NGK-6510 with success?
Asked by:
Falin
- 10/17/2017
I'm sure some folks have, but I don't know of anyone who has really had to. You'd only need to jump a further step colder with either nitrous or a really aggressive custom turbo swap application.

I’m guessing these are not pre gapped. Everyone is doing 30 is from what I’m understanding? Thanks!
Asked by:

- 1/19/2018
These plugs are not pre-gapped, and will need to be gapped down to whatever your tuner recommends. For tuned trucks, most custom tuners generally recommend .030" to .028".

I got a 2012 f150 eco boost with a k and n Intake and 73 mm throttle body. I’m going to add a tune but run the economy tune most of the time, also going to put a charge pipe on. Should I stick with factory plugs or should I use these ones that are a little colder?
Asked by:
Thomas
- 12/21/2018
You should stick with either SP-534s or 6509 plugs in the factory heat range.

I have a 17 3.5 with a injen intake, jet throttle body, magnaflow exhaust, FullRace Intercooler and piping, turbosmart bov, and plan to do down pipes this week before a custom Dyno. Would these be the plugs I want? Plan to upgrade turbos within next year as well..
Asked by:
Ryan
- 9/19/2019
If you're going to do upgraded turbochargers fairly soon, then these plugs are probably your best bet. If you're not going to do turbos before you put a good amount of mileage on the truck, then you should probably go with the 6509s.

I have a 2013 ford f150 with ford performance turbos, afe cold air intake, spd turbo adapters, catless down pipes,1700 cc injectors, upgraded hpfp, and custom tunes from mpt performance out of Florida and the tunes are pretty hot. Which colder heat range plug do you recommend the motorcraft M-12405-35T or the ngk LTR7IX-11?
Asked by:
Brody VanderPlaats
- 6/29/2022
From my understanding, the heat range of the two is more or less similar. The Ford Performance Plugs are pre-gapped at .031", while the NGKs are not, but you may need to go tighter anyway due to all your mods. Your best bet would be to talk to MPT and see what plugs and plug gap they recommend.
