The only way to get serious with a totally blacked-out styling theme is to get rid of those red, boring factory taillights. And since we're pretty intent on turning our 2007 F150 5.4L into a rolling Halloween mobile with black styling and orange accents, we needed to pull out all the stops and get our taillight situation squared away. That's where our friends over at Recon come in with their smoked LED taillight kit for the 2004 to 2008 F150s. Recon's taillights have a mildly smoked lens and a totally black housing that gives them a pretty awesome look, that's only made better by the extremely bright LEDs arranged in two columns of six with unique reflectors that provide a great look. These taillights are part of Recon's complete 2004 to 2008 F150 lighting package, that they were kind enough to send us for our own devious uses.
Since we needed to have our hands free to operate cameras, we turned to our good friends down at Extreme Performance in Goodyear, Arizona, to throw these on the truck for us. The best news of the day is that the taillights were extremely easy to install, and Jay had them in our truck in only a few minutes.
The first step of our Recon taillight install was to get the factory taillights out. The good news it that it's pretty simple. Jay started by removing the two mounting bolts from the tailgate jamb.

With those two bolts removed, Jay pulled the light from the truck. He then disconnected the wiring harness for the taillights and removed the taillight bulb.

Jay then grabbed Recon's taillight and installed the factory reverse bulb into the light.

With the reverse bulb in, Jay connected the spade connector for the Recon taillight's LED into the factory taillight harness.

Once everything was connected, Jay put Recon's taillight into place on the truck while making sure not to pinch any of the wiring.

With the taillight in place, Jay bolted it back down to the truck using the stock bolts.

The process for the passenger side is exactly the same as the driver's.

After Jay got through with the passenger side taillight, our installation was complete.
