I haven't even tried the 93 octane performance tune yet! I have been running on the 91 octane performance tune and it's pretty amazing. My previous vehicle was a 2015 Camaro SS and I did a Hypertech tune, CIA cold air intake, and throttle controller. I thought the Camaro was really quick, but 5 Star Tune has got this 5.0L acting like the Hulk! The truck has a leveling kit, but other than that and the Bully Dog BDS/5 Star Tune, it's completely stock. My best 0-60 time is under 5 seconds, which is incredible to me. If I want performance in the truck, I drive it in the 'tow-haul' mode and the transmission hits every gear nice and firm. It's very quick for sure and now is much more capable than stock. I haven't paid attention to fuel mileage much, but I'm normal driving mode on the highway, it appears to average around 17.5-18 mpg. I'm very happy with this set up and definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a definite advantage.

I have about 150 miles on it since uploading the 87 perf-tow tune and I really like it. It accelerates like a new truck and still cruises just fine. I have 34" tires and previously it seemed my truck would go in to 6th a little prematurely. Now it stays in 5th a little longer and doesn't always need to hop between 5th and 6th. It will get and stay in 6th when on the highway but not driving around on 45 mph roads. I am really pleased so far.

Customer Question When ordered from 5 Star tuning's website, this tuner has the ability to remove auto start stop. If ordered from Stage3, is the tuner still able to disable start stop?

Asked by: Hunter - 8/5/2022
Customer Answer Auto Start/Stop can be disabled. You'll make your selection on our online tune form once you receive your device.

Customer Question Hi. 2016 5.0L Lariat with AFE intake and corsa exhaust. 1) Can the custom tune be applied to overwrite just the sport mode or tow mode and leave the default? 2) How will a custom tune compare to the default sport or tow modes built in to the lariat? 3) If the custom tune just affects default mode and not sport or haul, what happens if the truck goes to sport or haul mode? Thank you so much for your answers.

Asked by: Matthew Smith - 7/15/2021
Customer Answer 1). The tuning cannot "overwrite" or take the place of a single drive modes. The drive modes are just slight changes to shifting and throttle response based on the PCM programming. 2). Custom tuning (especially the Performance/Tow and Performance Tunes) will be a huge difference in power, shifting, and response over the Sport or Tow modes. 3). The factory Sport and Tow modes will still technically work, but they won't make as much of a difference with 5-Star's tuning installed, and you'll probably end up using them less.

Customer Question So this tuner won’t work at all with catless y pipe? Or does it just not turn off.CEL?

Asked by: Miguel - 6/11/2021
Customer Answer 5-Star will no longer tune for catless Y-pipes, and the device itself is not capable of disabling the rear oxygen sensors.

Customer Question I have a 2015 F-150 5.0L with a 6in lift and 35in tires and a 3.31 differential.  Is this able to increase RPMs without changing gears?  i.e. currently 1450 rpms in 6th gear at 65 mph and would like that higher.  I will also likely change the differential this year. Are you able to get updated tunes for a differential change?  Finally, does it matter what custom tunes you pick when ordering since it sounds like you fill out a custom form after receiving the tuner?  I run 87 octane gas and am only really interested in the 87 performance/tow tune and wouldn't know which other tunes to select.

Asked by: Chris - 2/28/2021
Customer Answer 5-Star's tunes adjust shift points and gear-holding to a large extent, and there is some degree of user customization (if you do not get warranty-backed tunes), but you can't choose the specific RPM your truck runs at, since that depends on tire size, gearing, and throttle inputs. The choice of tune does matter, since you do not select the tunes on the tune form. The tune form is only informational. It's generally a good idea to get a couple of different tunes. Personally, I recommend getting an 87 Performance/Tow, 91 Performance/Tow, and a 91 Performance just in case you end up somewhere without one octane or another or if you want to stretch your truck's legs a little more. A change in differential does not require retuning, though changing gears will require you to update your tunes.

Customer Question I have a 2019 f150 5.0. If I get the tuner with the warranty will I be able to adjust tire size for bigger tires?

Asked by: Mathew Briden - 7/14/2020
Customer Answer For warranty tunes, the tire size adjustment is locked out to prevent odometer tomfoolery. However, the tunes will be made for whatever tire size you currently have, and 5-Star can retune if you change tire sizes.

Customer Question What octane tune would you suggest for 88 octane fuel and what would the rough power and torque gains be for this combo?

Asked by: Dan - 5/26/2020
Customer Answer You would need to run an 87 octane if you're planning on using 88 octane fuel (or if that's all that's available). You can always run a tune that's meant for a lower octane fuel than what you're running. However, you absolutely cannot run a tune for a higher octane than what's in your tank.

Customer Question What's the difference between the ngauge and this tuner?

Asked by: Korey - 1/24/2020
Customer Answer Quite a bit. The nGauge and BDX have very different firmware and operations. The nGauge offers a bit easier tuning and datalogging, though the BDX and Bully Dog are more widely supported.

Customer Question Has the Firmware issue been fixed yet for the 2018 trucks to where this tuner can adjust for tire size?

Asked by: FWB4 - 1/16/2020
Customer Answer According to 5-Star, SCT has released a new firmware version that has fixed the issue, and these devices can now adjust tire size. Just keep in mind, that it's still a good idea to download and install the newest firmware when you receive the device.

Customer Question I have a 2019 F-150 5.0 and am curious about getting this tuner with the 100,000 mile Powertrain warranty as my truck currently has a 125,000 miles bumper to bumper warranty. Will this programmer allow me to modify the factory speed limiter if I choose to purchase the 100,000 mile warranty? Will an e85 tune be available for the 2019 and will it also be covered under warranty?

Asked by: AguyfromTexas - 12/31/2019
Customer Answer On warranty tunes, 5-Star does not allow user adjustment of the speed limiter. However, they do bump the speed limited up to 120mph, which is just below the limits of the factory driveshafts. 5-Star now does offer e85 Performance Tunes for the 2018-2019 F150 5.0Ls.

Customer Question I purchased this tuner last year and received custom tunes from five star tuning. Question is do they send updates to your device or do you have to contact them for updates?

Asked by: Michael Walters - 7/4/2019
Customer Answer It depends on what you mean by updates. If you've added new parts that require revised tuning or you're having issues with your current tunes, give us a call directly at 623-434-5277.

Customer Question What is the difference between the Performance/Tow tune and just the Performance tune?

Asked by: Heath - 5/1/2018
Customer Answer The Performance tunes have extremely firm shifting, aggressive tip-in, and slightly higher peak power than the Performance/Tow tunes

Customer Question Can you recalibrate the speedo for larger tires with this bully dog?

Asked by: Vincent - 11/25/2017
Customer Answer The BDX can only currently adjust tire size on 2015-2016 F150s only, and cannot adjust tire size on the 2017-2018 F150s.

Customer Question How would the tunes affect the truck when I put it in the factory sport or tow modes? and is it compatible with 2017 trucks? thanks Anthony

Asked by: Anthony Lucacel - 9/18/2017
Customer Answer Both Tow/Haul and Sport modes would still function as they normally do, however, you will likely find yourself using them less, since 5-Star's tuning already adjusts your transmission's shift points and shift pressures to a large degree.
