Before you Buy: F150 LED Bulbs and LED Conversion Kit Breakdown

The factory halogen and incandescent bulbs on F150s with base lighting packages may do their jobs, but their performance is merely "adequate" for the mass market. If your lighting needs are more intense than your average bear, your best place to turn to are LED Replacement Bulbs or LED Conversion Kits. 2015-2020 F150 LED Replacement Bulbs and 2009-2014 F150 LED Replacement Bulbs give your truck increased lighting output and a much more modern and luxurious look than standard halogen and incandescent bulbs. That being said, there are a lot of LED bulb and LED conversion kit options out on the market, and narrowing down your choices can be difficult. There's a also a few details you ought to know when making an LED bulb buying decision for your truck.

Headlight LED Conversion Kits

The most common complaint when it comes to lighting on both the 2009-2014 F150s and especially the 2015-2020 F150s is the output from the stock low beams. The factory headlights on trucks with base lighting packages come with halogen bulbs that don't have the a ton of output and have a standard, yellowish 4300k-ish color temperature that doesn't look all that great. The 2015-2020 F150s have an extra problem in that their headlight housings and reflector setups don't produce that great of a beam pattern to begin with, which isn't helped by low-out halogen bulbs. H13 LED Conversion Kits for the 2009-2014 F150s and H11 LED Conversion Kits for the 2015-2020 F150s give your truck much greater low-beam outputs, and most LED kits feature either a 5000K or 6000K color temperature, which gives your lights a nice, bright, white color.

Now, there are a couple of issues with headlight LED conversion kits. The giant elephant in the room is street legality, and the sad state of things here in the USA is that you are not technically DOT compliant when replacing your factory halogen headlight bulbs. That being said, state laws and enforcement vary WILDLY, and in our experience, as long as you're not blinding everyone on the road, you won't get much attention from your local constabulary. Speaking of blinding folks, also make sure to re-aim your headlights after an LED conversion kit. The increased output means your overall beam pattern expands, and it's a good idea to get your headlights pointed a wee lower to avoid annoying everyone on the road, and again, not catching unwanted attention from your friends in blue.

F150 Fog Light LED Conversion Kits

If you're a little hesitant about some of the legalities of headlight LED conversion kits or want to stack even more lighting power on top of a headlight LED bulb, then 2004-2014 F150 Fog Light LED Conversion Kits or 2015-2020 F150 LED Fog Light Conversion Kits should be right up your alley. H10/9005 LED Conversion Kits add huge levels of output to your F150's fog lights, and unlike the headlights, the fogs aren't as regulated by the DOT (assuming you keep the stock housing). Moreover, there's a much wider range of color temperature options available to the fogs, letting you drop in amber or stark yellow 3000K color temperature LED conversion kits that are more effective at cutting through actual fog or dust than whiter color temperatures.

F150 LED Turn Signals

The factory turn signals on the 2009-2020 F150s are surprisingly difficult to see, especially from the sides. 2009-2014 F150 LED Turn Signals and 2015-2020 F150 LED Turn Signals make your blinkers and hazards a lot easier to see. While the design of the headlights doesn't help side visibility, LED turn signals are still a pretty effective way of making your signalling much easier to see. Some of these turn signals even feature a switchback function, where they have a white running light and amber turn signal that helps change up your truck's looks.

LED License Plate Bulbs

One of the more popular LED bulbs upgrades for the 2009-2020 F150s is license plate bulbs. The stock bulbs just don't look that great when shining onto your truck, and even trucks with OEM HID or LED lighting came with sickly yellow, low-output, incandescent license plate bulbs. 2009-2014 F150 license plate bulbs and 2015-2020 F150 license plate bulbs are a nice styling upgrade for practically any F150 build. There's even complete replacement housings if you've managed to give your OEM license plate light housings a good kick, which is much more common than you think.
