Highlights:
Extremely strong tubular arms with reliable balljoint
1.5" diameter tubular steel arms
Uprated MOOG balljoint in an indexed housing
Better long-term reliability than uniball upper control arms
Drop-in replacement for factory UCAs
Comes with hardware and instructions
Provides More Articulation and Strength with a Quiet Ride
For folks that value long-term reliability and a clean, quiet ride over deflection angles and hardcore off-roading should skip uniball upper control arms and take a look at these BDS Tubular Steel Ball Joint Upper Control Arms. These BDS UCAs combine an extremely strong tubular steel construction with an uprated MOOG Ball Joint that's more durable than the stock ball joint and is installed in an indexed housing that allows for more deflection and articulation than stock that makes it perfect for leveled and lifted 2004-2020 F150s. The BDS UCAs drop right into place of your F150's stock upper control arms, making them a hassle-free upgrade to your F150's suspension.
Strong Tubular Steel Construction with Uprated Ball Joint and Rubber Bushings
The BDS UCAs manage to provide more strength and durability than the factory control arms, all while keeping your F150's ride clean and quiet, even in aggressive applications. The control arms are made out of 1.5" diameter mandrel-bent tubular steel with .120" wall thickness and a gloss black powder coat finish, which makes them much stronger than the factory stamped steel upper control arms. The control arms are built around an uprated MOOG ball joint in and indexed housing that allows for slightly more travel and articulation than stock while helping the UCAs avoid spring contact in leveled applications. The ball joint is replaceable, and uses an extremely common MOOG part number that's easy to find. The control arms use high-durometer rubber bushings for their body mounts which are quieter and more reliable than polyurethane bushings.
Fitment:
2004-2020 F150
Will not fit 2010-2014 SVT Raptors or 2017-2020 Raptor models.
Backspacing Requirements:
these upper control arms require a wheel with a maximum of a 5.50" of backspacing in order to clear a 12.50" wide tire. Wheels with larger amounts of backspacing will fit, but you will be required to use narrower tires.

2013 f150
Corrected my angle issues with a 2.5" level kit on my 2013. F 150. I am running stock 18" FX4 wheels with 275/70/18 goodyear duratracks with no spacers and I can slide my middle finger between UCA and tire. No rubbing issues at all. Moog problem solver ball joints are replacable which is a huge plus. These UCA's are an awesome upgrade for leveled trucks.

These UCA are very well built, easy to install. The only thing I would suggest to BDS is the please please please stop packaging painted metal parts loose in a box. These came so chipped and scratched up I spent hours trying to touch up all of the paint blemishes from shipping.

They came in the mail pretty quick. Packaging could have been a little better. Maybe spray foam. Although this box was not damaged, I have seen some boxes get beat while in transit. They looked really good paint an welds wise. They fit my truck good. Although the position the ball joint had to be pushed in. So it will connect to the lift spindle, is the same tight pinched looking position my stock upper control arms was in. So we will see how long the ball joint lasts. Also I have a 6" suspension lift an put on the new rough country vertex coil overs. The same time I did the bds upper control arms. Another thing I noticed an didnt like was when I put grease in it. I pumped till the boot started to expand a little. Then grease started coming out of the boot, maybe there's a pin hole in it or something. Other than that I like the look an how beefy the tubular Design is.

I installed these with the fox 2.0 coil-overs. They’re great, the bds control arms breaks people necks and has way bigger circumference than the OEM ones. These are build for off roading and mall crawling.

2013 Ford F-150 super cab
They are as said way more durable than your factory uca, but overall for me the ride quality did not improve, I had mainly got them for my leveling kit to help with the ball joint angle, if anything it sometimes is worse for ride quality compared to factory. Idk if anything me else has it different but taking bigger bumps it rebounds way worse but if you don’t care about highway ride quality than I’d say you should buy these

Great upgrade for lifted applications. I put these on my truck that has a 6" RC lift with Fox front and rear shocks and springs. At full sag on the front end the upper control arm has about an inch of space between itself and the springs. Front end tracks much better and feels more firmly planted on the ground. Install was super easy and didn't take very long at all.

2016 F150 I am running 2inch level kit with 20x9 +20mm wheels with a backspace of 5.75. Tires are 295/60r20 which comes to 11.77 inches wide. I am assuming these UCAs would fit?
Asked by:
Jacob
- 7/7/2023
The backspacing requirements only come into play when you are trying to fit a 12.5" wide tire. Most 295 tires measure in the 11.5-11.7" range so you should not have any issues. Most tire manufacturers list their actual physical measurements on their website if you want to double check that the tire you are looking at is close to the 12.5" width.

Will BDS UCA fit 2018 F150 XLT Sport. Stock wheels, 275/65/18 with +44 offset I think 6.5 back space? Planing on doing a 2inch level? Thanks will upgrade to 20x9 +1 fuel wheels wit 295/60/20 in the future, will those fit as well? Thanks
Asked by:
Tom
- 6/23/2023
The backspacing requirements on the BDS control arm only come into play when you are trying to fit a 12.5" wide tire. The 295 tires are 11.6" so you should not have any issues with the sidewall rubbing on the control arm. If you choose to run a wider than 295 tire than you will definitely look at having to run wheel spacers or an aftermarket wheel with less of a positive backspacing.

Hello. I need an UCA to go with Fox 2.0 coilovers set at “out of the box” height. I have Raptor wheels which are 17x8.5 with 6.2” backspace and +34 offset. Will 285/75r17 or 33.9x11.2 rub on the UCA at full lock? Will the UCA improve the geometry and ability to properly align?
Asked by:
Mark
- 3/17/2023
According to BDS's backspacing specs, they will clear your wheel and tire combination. The BDS UCAs slightly change caster, but in general, won't don't much to outright correct alignment or suspension geometry. These UCAs will function better at a thrown-off geometry and avoid spring contact at bad angles, but they don't "fix" issues.

Will these fit 2021 f150
Asked by:
Paul

This particular set will not. BDS has two versions for the 2021-2022 F150s. They have
a version that does not have a leveling sensor arm
for dynamic bending headlights and
a version that does a provision for the leveling sensor arm
.

I Just picked up a set of gen 2 raptor rims with some toyo open country r/t 295/70r17 tires and was wondering if the tires would hit the joint on the upper arm. I think the stock spec for the rims are 17x8.5 with a +35 offset.
Asked by:
Ian
- 3/25/2022
These UCAs require a maximum of 5.50" backspace to clear 12.50" tires. The stock Raptor wheels have a 6.50" backspace, so by the math you'd be able to clear an 11.50" wide tire, and a 295 wide Toyo R/T should be fine.

I have a 2012 rwd f150 with fox 2.5 series shock absorbers but the control arms are very stretched downwards, the shock raised the car about 3", so I want to know if you solved the problem with bds control arms? I have spacer wheel 2" and 285/70/17 wheel
Asked by:
Emilio
- 3/2/2022
These UCAs won't do anything to "correct" your truck's suspension geometry, and they'll still have a fairly steep angle at your current lift height. However, they can better handle that off-angle and they avoid spring contact at full droop, unlike that stock UCAs. So while they don't technically solve for geometry issues on their own, they do help you avoid issues at a leveled height while also being stronger than stock.

2014 F150 Limited 22” rim +44 offset. Will these work.
Asked by:
Mike
- 3/1/2022
That depends entirely on what tire you're going to use. You can use your wheels just fine, but due to the backspace of the stock Limited 22" wheels (6.73"), you'll be limited to a 285 wide tire if you want to use these UCAs.

Asked by:
AYS
- 2/7/2022
We would need to know the specific offset of your wheels. Those tires may clear the UCAs depending on their offset. Please call us directly at 623-434-5277 or email us at
[email protected]
so we can get more specific. With a set of Bilstein 5100s, you will likely get rub with that wheel and tire combination, even if they do clear the UCAs.

How much additional suspension travel would these arms provide in a leveled application? With current Fox 2.0 setup, getting some top out noise over speed bumps and potholes (on the downstroke). Could this noise be from ball joint angles hitting limits in the stock UCAs? Would these eliminate the noise?
Asked by:
A
- 1/25/2022
In general, UCAs tend to provide around 1" to 1.5" of extra travel, however, you're limited pretty quickly by the CVs and tie rods. What you may be hearing is coilover spring contact with the stock UCA which these UCAs will help with, though it could be the ball joint binding.

can you run stock 20inch 2007 rims with a 2.5inch level without rubbing

Depends on the width of tire you're planning to run. These UCAs can be used with most factory wheels, but you'll be limited to a maximum of an 11.6" wide or 295 wide tire.

I bought the BDS upper control arms for my 2014 f150 and I was wondering if I could fit 35.12.50r20s with my stock Ford lariat wheels and if not how big of a spacer will I need to run them
Asked by:
Jarred
- 7/27/2021
These UCAs will not clear OEM 20" wheels and a 12.50" wide tire, due to the large amount of backspace of the wheels. In theory, you would need a 1" wheel spacer to clear a 12.50" wide tire with these UCAs, however, a 1" spacer will require stud trimming. We recommend using at least a 1.25" spacer to avoid trimming.

I have a 2020 f150 with stock 20 inch sport wheels on 275/60/20 all terrains and I just bought a fox 2.0 coilover kit for my truck and I want to know if I would need to upgrade the upper control arms on my truck to extend the life of my suspension components I don’t want to wear them out prematurely my truck is just a daily driver and won’t be doing much off roading at all or ever just wanted the nice level stance and little more ride quality.
Asked by:
Greg J Maust
- 7/24/2021
If you're going to use the Fox 2.0s at their out-of-the-box ride height or their max 2" and only on the street, you probably do not need aftermarket UCAs. If you do even up doing more trail-riding post-install, then UCAs would probably be a good idea.

What size spacer is needed to run factory 20" platinum wheels for the winter set up?
Asked by:
Brandon Yavorka
- 6/30/2021
Depending on what tire you're using, you may not need spacers at all. The Platinum wheels have a 6.5" backspace, so you could feasibly use up to a 295 wide or 11.50" wide tire on the stock wheels without a spacer. If you do want to fit a 12.50" wide tire, you would need at least a 1" spacer, though we recommend using at least a 1.25" spacer to avoid stud trimming.

If you're off-road pretty much constantly, you're better bet would probably be the
ICON Delta Joint UCAs
. While the BDS UCAs are an upgrade over stock, they still use a rubber ball joint and rubber frame mount bushings, which you seem to be tearing up. You'd be better off with the Delta Joint and the polyurethane bushings of the ICONs, just make sure to grease the poly bushings on occasion.

What is the widest tire I could run with the stock 17x7.5 steel wheels (+44 offset)? Stock tire dimensions are 275/65/18 @+44, but I'm hoping to avoid the headache of changing the offset too much.
Asked by:
PattyMac
- 11/19/2020
The stock 17x7.5" wheels have 6" of spacespace, so by BDS's math, you should be able to clear up to a 305 wide tire. However, 305/12" tires is just the section width, and the overall width of certain tires (especially M/Ts) can be a good deal wider. Your best bet to avoid all clearance issues would be to go with a 295 wide/11.5" wide tire. A good tires size to use in conjunction with a leveling kit would be a 295/70R17.

You don't technically do not have to remove the coilover to get the UCA out, though removing the coilover (or at least unbolting the coilover from the upper mount) does make the job a lot easier, since there's not a ton of clearance to get at the UCA frame mount nuts.

That somewhat depends on the specs of your wheels, since just about any aftermarket UCA requires certain backspacing specs (usually 5" to 5.50" to clear a 12.50" wide tire). That being said, if you're running a typical 14" wide wheel with a -75mm or -76mm offset, you'll clear the UCAs fine, especially if you're already clearing your lift kit. As for which arms, if your truck is primarily a street-driven truck, then the BDS UCAs would be a great choice.

They're a bit more quiet than equivalent UCAs with polyurethane bushings, especially if you don't grease the polyurethane bushings on a semi-regular basis. As far as articulation is concerned, I have not seen a back-to-back comparison of the two. The ICON Delta Joints probably have them beat in overall deflection angle, but I don't really know how big of a difference it would make out in the real world.

I have a 2016 F-150 with the Bilstein strut 2.5 or 2.75. level. Will I have clearance issues with factory OEM Size 18" x 7.5" with a Offset of +44mm on 295/70r18? Also is there a rough ETA to when these will be back in stock? Cause I would rather go through you than any other company!

According to BDS's backspacing math, you should be able to clear a 295 wide tire on the factory wheels with these UCAs, as long as it's not a really aggressive M/T with chunky sidewall and large shoulder lugs. BDS is back open and shipping these UCAs, though there is about a 7 day delay in shipping while they catch up from being totally shut down due to COVID.

I have a 2014 F150 4x4 with a 2.5 inch leveling kit (bilstein 5100s with eibach springs). Would these UCAs fit with stock gen 1 raptor wheels with 285/75/17 tires? What is the largest tire size I can get with out rubbing? Thanks
Asked by:

These UCAs should clear that wheel and tire combination just fine. If you have a factory bumper and valance, the biggest tire you can likely clear is a 295/70R17 which is wider than a 285/75R17, but is not quite as tall.

I've got a 2013 F-150 and I'm adding Bilstein Adjustable struts set on the stock height setting with the Eibach coil springs to give me 2.7 inches up front. Planning on keeping the stock Ford 20 inch wheels and adding LT295/65R20 Ridge grapplers. Will these control arms rub the inside of the tire? The stock control arms on the truck are shot and need to be replaced, I figured I'd go with a bigger aftermarket control arm to help control the bigger tires.
Asked by:

According to BDS's backspacing math, you should be able to clear that wheel and tire combination, since the stock wheels have 6.50" of backspace while a 295 wide tire is 11.6" wide.

2013 f150 FX4 with a 4" BDS lift w/ Fox coilovers sitting on 20x9" (+18mm & 5.71" backspace) wrapped with 35x12.50... Will these arms fit?
Asked by:

- 12/25/2019
The will not. These UCAs require a maximum backspace of 5.50" to clear a 12.50" wide tire. To clear a wheel with a 5.71" backspace, you'd have to use a maximum of a 305 wide tire. To clear a 12.50" wide tire, you'd need a wheel spacer.

You should be fine with that wheel and tire combination with these UCAs. The UCAs require a 5.5" backspace to clear 12.50" wide tires. Your wheels are at a 5.50" backspace, and you only need to clear a 12" equivalent tire.

Technically, no. If you're installing the BDS arms alone without adding some sort of leveling, and alignment is not generally needed. However, if you are adding these arms at the same time as a leveling kit of some sort, then you would need an alignment.

According to BDS's backspace math, you should be able to clear that wheel and tire combination. These UCAs require a 5.50" backspace to clear a 12.50" wide tire, and since your Methods are at 5.75" backspace, you should be able to clear up to a 12.25" tire (mathematically). The UCAs will fit a 2014 F150, regardless of engine options. However, you will likely not clear with that wheel and tire combination, according to BDS's math. BDS states that this UCA requires a wheel with a maximum backspace of 5.50" to clear a 12.50" wide tire. For a 13.50" wide tire, you would need 4.50" of backspace, and your wheels have 4.7" of backspace. You would need 20x10" wheels with a -24mm backspace or narrower tires.

Asked by:

These UCAs will not correct your truck's CV angles. They don't even correct UCA angles. They just handle leveled geometry better than the stock UCAs and won't contact the spring in a leveled application. The only way to "correct" your geometry is with a full 4" lift with dropped crossmembers and new knuckles. These UCAs will clear a 12.50" wide tire on a 20x10" wheel and -24mm offset without issues, however.

These UCAs will clear your wheel and tire combination. However, you likely have a different issue in regards to contact. A 295/65R20 is a large tire for a leveling kit, and you may be getting rub on the back side of your front wheel well or your factory fender flares, if you have them equipped.

Asked by:

If you have full-length Prorunner Coilovers, then these UCAs should fit without issues. If you're using stock-replacement coilovers in conjunction with the kit's strut spacer, then you will likely have issues, due to the spacer pushing the coilover's upper mount down far enough to interferes with the travel of the arms. As for alignment, these UCAs do not offer any additional camber or caster adjustment to help with your truck's alignments.

That somewhat depends on what tire you're planning to run, but BDS's 5.50" maximum backspace is recommended for the clearance of a 12.50" wide tire, so if you have a wheel with less backspace, you can clear a tire that's at least that wide.

35/11.50r20 what offset can you get away with?
Asked by:
John
- 3/26/2019
That's dependent on the width of the wheel, since backspacing is based both on width and offset. If you're talking about a 20x9" wheel, you could feasibly get away with a +20mm offset and an 11.50"/295mm wide tire. That being said, a 20x9" +20mm will limit you if you do want to go wider down the road, and you may want to consider doing a 20x9" with an 01mm offset to meet BDS's backspacing requirements for clearing a 12.50" wide tire and future-proof your build.

Asked by:

The principle advantage of a uniball over a balljoint is structural strength. A uniball joint can handle extremely violent impacts (running through desert at 80mph), while a balljoint always runs the risk of tearing during extreme driving. Granted, the benefit is better sealing and better long-term reliability over a uniball. Really, your choice is going to depend on what kind of driving you're doing.

Going to be putting in the 6" BDS lift kit but coilovers will be down the road. Is it better to get the BDS UCA or the Icon Delta UCA? Don't off road much but when I do I want good performance and they both seem like solid UCAs.
Asked by:

Your choice is going to depend on what KIND of off-roading you're going to be doing. If you're really going to be beating your truck, then you should probably go with the ICON Delta Joints, since the Delta Joint is much less likely to pull itself apart if you're being really aggressive off-road. If you're just hitting a few forest roads or hunting trails and keeping your speeds down, there's no reason why you couldn't use the BDS UCAs.

I am interested in the BDS for the ball joint and long term reliability. I am also interested in the most travel over stock. I am currently running the Halo lifts coilovers that are 2.75” over stock, and the stock UCA’s bottom out on any down travel along with hitting the spring. These advertise slightly more travel over stock. Are there any UCA’s that provide more travel than others? None of them really specify and I don’t want to purchase the wrong ones because it’s a pricey piece.
Asked by:
David
- 11/14/2018
All aftermarket UCAs provide roughly the same 1" to 1.5" of travel over stock, and the real issue for that is your travel gets limited by the CV not long after you improve it with a UCA. Unfortunately, no one makes a drop-in, factory-length, high-angle CV for the standard F150s so it's not really possible to do a real head-to-head test that solely looks at UCA deflection and how it relates to aftermarket UCA travel. Really, your choice is going to more depend on price point and the strength vs. longevity of balljoints vs. uniballs vs. Delta Joints.

Adding a leveling kit alone (be it spacers or coilovers) does not necessitate a set of aftermarket upper control arms. How does this UCA compare to the ICON?

The construction of the actual arms is similar, so the overall strength of the arms themselves are going to be extremely similar. In general, ball joints have better long-term reliability than uniballs, since they're fully sealed. Uniballs suffer from dirt/dust ingress which tears up their liners over time. However, uniballs have much more structural strength than ball joints, which is why uniballs are the go-tos for off-road applications. If you're simply looking for more travel and less spring contact after a level on truck that doesn't see a lot of aggressive off-roading, then a ball joint may be better choice than a uniball. However,
ICON's new Delta Joint Arms
are a cut above both ball joints and uniballs, though they are fairly pricey.
