The 2015 Mustang Officially Revealed!

Ford has officially unveiled the completely redesigned 2015 Mustang, and handed over some great, new info on what the sixth-generation Pony will be packing under its hood, in its suspension, and in its interior. The official images do the new Mustang much better justice than the leaked images from Autoweek, but the design is still stirring up controversy, especially fans of the more retro look of the 2005 to 2014 Mustangs. The new S550 body style is a big departure for the Mustangs, but the aggressive looks, revised suspension, lighter weight and new addition to the engine lineup may make this Mustang one of the best-handling and most nimble Ponies ever.

The 2015 Mustang may have moved away from the completely retro S197 body style, but the new S550 body combined with its aggressive styling that combines modern styling with some retro cues makes this Pony bound to be a legend. On top of the Mustang's amazing new body, there's a new engine thrown into the lineup in the form of a 2.3L EcoBoost I4 to go along with the trusty Duratec 3.7L V6, and the big, bad 5.0L Coyote V8. The EcoBoost I4 has a preliminary power rating of "over 300" horsepower and the same amount of torque. The 3.7L V6 has no official numbers as of yet, but we're taking an educated guess that it'll probably be slightly (though not much) higher than the current engine's 305 horsepower and 280lb-ft of torque. As for the now legendary Coyote V8, it's estimated have "more than" the 420 horsepower of the 2014 Mustang GTs, but again, firm numbers are not yet available. The engines will be mated to either the same Gertag 6-Speeed manual transmission as the 2014 Mustang or a currently unknown 6-speed automatic with paddle shifters.

Both the front and rear suspension of the 2015 Mustang have been revised, with the most notable change being the addition of an independent rear suspension (IRS) system in place of the Pony's traditional live axle. The new IRS will allow the rear wheels to move independently of each other when put under load, giving the 2015 better handling and cornering performance. While cornering and handling is a great, an IRS is usually not as strong as a live axle when it comes to hard drag strip launches, but it remains to be seen just what kind of power this new 2015 Mustang IRS can actually handle.

The front suspension got a makeover as well, with the most noticeable feature being the new, double ball joint design. With two arms helping locate the front wheels, the 2015 Mustang's handling should be noticeably improved. The double ball joint design gets paired with a MacPherson strut-style damping setup that replaces the current L-style.

The new suspension setup combined with an awesome engine lineup is already making for a nimble vehicle, and the 2015 Mustang is also 200 pounds lighter than the 2014 Mustangs which will help handling and fuel economy. The Mustang GT will come standard with four-piston Brembo front calipers and 13" rotors, while the GT;s brakes will be available for the EcoBoost Mustang as part of its "Performance Package" upgrade option. The Performance Package upgrade for the 2015 Mustang GT will include six-piston Brembo calipers with 15" front rotors. Wheel options will range from 18" to 20".

While the interior of the 2015 Mustangs may look similar to the outgoing car's, a lot of changes were made by ford to appeal to the wider, world market that they have in mind for their Sixth Generation Mustang. The 2015 comes with MyFord Touch, though all heating and A/C Controls will be physical buttons in response to the many complaints about MyTouch's finicky control interface. The Mustang will come with TrackApps, mode-selectable traction control, and other software. The dash and console are decked out in aluminum and chrome styling, trim, switches, and knobs that keeps up on the retro styling with some modern functionality.

2015 Mustang Interior

While the purists may not be huge fans of the redesigned Mustang, we here at Stage 3 are going to wait until we see one in person (and hopefully take it for a spin) before rendering final judgement. Overall, the changes that Ford made seem to point to an awesome road race car, with the right parts, of course. We're going to do our best to get fitment confirmations for the 2015 Mustangs and keep you up to date on all the new performance parts and tuning that get released in the coming days, weeks, and months. We're excited. Are you?

Ultimately, a sports cars is supposed to do two things: go fast and turn heads. Ford has definitely accomplished this with the new Mustang. It will be a beast on the streets & people will turn their heads to avoid looking at it.
