I bought this tuner as soon as it was available as a package through Stage 3 with custom tuning by 5 star. When I got the tuner I atrempted to load one of the canned SCT tunes in my truck, only to find the tuner needed to be updated using a windows based computer. I was slightly dismayed as I use apple products. Eventually I was able to use a friends computer, update my tuner and load my custom tunes on it. My truck is now an absolute animal! I've also noticed an increase in fuel economy when I'm not stomping on it. Im at about 18mpg around town. Up from 16. I'm thoroughly impressed with SCT's canned tunes as well as my custom tunes from 5 star. The tunes I chose were 93 performance, 91 towing, 91 economy, 87 performance and 87 economy. Mods to my truck so far are a derestricted stock air box with dry AEM filter and plugs gapped down to .028. Future mods include a 4 exhaust in the very near future which I will purchase through stage 3. Not only do they have the best prices around for late model Ford mods but their customer service is second to none. John hooked me up with my custom tunes quickly. I couldn't be happer with this tuner and with stage 3. Buy this tuner!

PLUS- Good product for the price. Good features and settings. Canned and custom tunes perform as advertised. Actual 1-3 mpg gains on economy tunes and truck is very quick and responsive on performance tunes. Nice that x4 can correct for account for tire size changes and other parameters. MINUS- A big pain to set up on the computer/update software/transfer tunes, with no guide book, unhelpful website, non-existant customer service (via email and web chat). Tuning is not quick: takes 10-15 mins to tune. User has to sit there through entire process to push button to continue tuning. After tuning several settings on dash computer, radio, etc are nulled; so have to mess with whole stytem to get back settings after each tune. Comparing to Cobb tuner i used on another vehicle, this system is lacking. Keep in mind: After each reset the computer has to re-learn transmission shifting behavior, causing erratic shifting. Ensure serial number is verified in info email, custom tunes will not work if ID info has a typo.

At first I wanted to be conservative and loaded the 87 performance/tow tune; I felt a difference, definitively, but I wanted more. Then I loaded the 91 performance tune, and let me tell you guys, this thing ROCKS; the truck feels like a sport sedan, so light and fast. With throttle at one third, it spins the tires when shifting from 1st to 2nd and from 2nd to 3rd; unbelievable! I also own an Audi A6 with the 4.2 V8, and let me tell you guys, my truck is just as fast! And I'm getting two more miles per gallon! I am really impressed! Great product, great customer service; they helped me updating my X4 tuner over the phone. Thank you guys!

I'm kicking myself for not getting this sooner. I went ahead and purchased prior to warranty expiration because I was confident based on other reviews and decided to test on my annual family camping trip. Hauling a small pop-up camper using the 87 ECO tune, I averaged almost 17MPG on the way there (vs. 12ish last year on the same trip). Since buying the truck, I haven't averaged 17MPG on any trip, let alone towing... well worth it!

Great Bang for the Buck!
I've been running the 87 perf/tow tune now for a little over 500 miles on 91 octane. Truck just keeps getting stronger and mpg's still creeping up. I was getting 14.5 stock with my level/wheels/tires. I'm now getting 16+. It was always my plan to run the 87 p/t on 91 just to play it safe mainly looking for better shifting. The shifting improvement is night/day over stock and power increase is the real deal. I'm afraid to install the 91 p/t as I may never want to go back. Thanks Stage 3/5*!

Hardest part was the download wait time. Initial setup of the tuner took 20 minutes with updating, etc. Plugged the 93 octane performance tune in right away! Holy Crap! I was chirping the tires without even trying through 4th gear! I just put new tires on and had to back it down before I burned them up! Switched to the 87eco tune, avg 13mpg but it is hard to tell, I upgraded to 33 tires and it is winter gas and morning idle warmup time makes a difference. Trying out the 87 perf/tow and that might be the sweet spot for saving a few bucks on cheaper gas and still hauling ass! (totally worth it if you upgrade your tire size to make your speedo/mileage accurate)

Giddy up!!!! Does exactly what is says it does. It feels like someone has kicked my truck in the ass every time I push the gas pedal. VERY happy with the performance I get out of my truck now. I did the 89 performance/tow and it is unbelievable. I can't even imagine what the 91 performance feels like. Do yourself a favor and get one of these now. It will pay for itself after a dozen or so fill ups (at least it will with my math and my 36 gal tank). It even allowed me to change the computer setting for my tire sensors so i don't get the orange light anymore.

After receiving the device, I had to make a couple of trips back and forth between the truck and computer. I updated it using SCT's software before hooking it up to the truck, then after attaching the device to the truck for it to figure out what I was driving, came back in and updated the device again. Then I was able to pull my strategy code and send off to Stage3/Five Star. They turned around my tunes super fast, under 2 hours! The device itself seems like it can be a little finicky when left plugged in; I've had it lock up a couple of times. But simply unplugging, and plugging back in fixes this. The gauges are super handy to have available to monitor engine conditions. I only run 92 octane. I loaded the 91 tow tune. Immediate improvement in throttle response, and the truck came alive! More low end torque, the transmission seems to decide on a gear much faster and just go, instead of thinking about it forever. Also noticed that it is less prone to immediately downshifting on small throttle changes; it stays in a higher gear and lets the turbos spool up and do their thing. This means turning lower RPMs accelerating up hills and keeping the truck in its peak torque band, 2000-3000 RPM. Long trips I saw a 1.0-1.5 MPG improvement on this tune, over stock. I haven't towed anything yet but hauling several people and a bunch of gear, the truck definitely doesn't seem to care about the extra weight. Just loaded the 91 performance tune last week and it has even more pep. Fuel economy in town has dropped from the tow tune, but I'm guessing in part because it's more fun to use the pedal on the right. This thing screams! I can't believe this heavy truck can get moving so fast with no other performance modifications other than the tune. One thing of note on the performance tune - on warmer days, the engine fan kicks on high much more than in the stock or tow tunes. I asked Stage 3 about it and they said this is part of the tune, the cooling strategy is a little more aggressive as Five Star thinks if you're running the performance tune, you'll be in high boost all the time, and they want to try to keep the motor cooler in heavy traffic or idle situations. All in all I am extremely happy with the tunes and device, and Stage 3's service is great as usual.

Turbo lag.. Gone!! Rear tires.. Soon to be gone!! Custom 93 performance tune is sick, only drove around for about a day before I had to take it off, hard shifting and tire spinning was just too much for in town driving. By far the best money I've spent on this truck so far! I will say the canned tune has givin me the best MPG but every truck is going to be different. Currently with the 93 canned tune I average 19 in town with 35s, stock I was getting about 13.5 to 14. A must have for any ecoboost owner!!

Ive been using the SCT X4 programmer with 5 Star tunes loaded for about a week now.. and I cant believe how much of a difference it makes! I do not have any other mods on the truck, and now I dont plan on adding any more because the tuner alone is plenty for me. I noticed the difference as soon as I pulled out of my driveway. Shifting was firmer (but not to firm to be annoying), acceleration was better, and the truck sounds just a little better too. Right now gas prices are low so I have been running the 91 performance/tow setting and I have not been driving conservatively so I have no idea if it will help m MPG yet. Once I get over how fast my truck is now, I will switch it to 91 Economy setting and put that to the test. I ended up mounting the programmer to the windshield with a universal cell phone cradle. I think that works better than the one that clips onto the back because this is very easy to release and it holds it well since the programmer is so light. By the way, before receiving my 5 Star tunes I uploaded the SCT canned tune, and I have to say that I was pretty impressed with it as well. It wasnt as smooth driving arount town as the 5Star is, but it definitely was nice to have something to play with while waiting for the custom tunes. I would suggest this purchase to anyone with an Ecoboost.

Bought this tuner because I was looking for better economy on long trips when I am not pulling my boat and more performance when pulling my boat and messing around in town. When I received the turner I followed the directions and sent in the info to SCT. They responded quickly and said that my truck was 6 releases behind on updates. I called my local Ford dealer and they haven't dealt with anyone wanting to tune their truck so wasn't sure what the latest PCM strategy code is for my truck so they said to bring it in and we can hook it up and it will tell us what the latest is. I had to pay 1/2 hour of labor to get it updated. Sent in the updated strategy code and my custom tunes arrived in my email the next day. Followed the instructions and flashed my truck. Took around 15min I guess to flash and had no issues. It has been raining here since I flashed it and my truck seems to have more power and torque and interested in seeing how it goes in the next day or so when it is sunny and 60 degrees. Very happy with the purchase and look forward to trying the other tunes.

So far so good, tunes loaded easily, the PC software though, not the best, it doesn't list this tuner, but works. Got the 5* tunes right away once I sent the PCM info, my only issues are, the MPG is not better with the tunes, already getting near 21 MPG stock. The other issue is the Perf/tow tunes are causing a miss at 65 MPH under load, could be the 3:15 gearing, but 5* is working with me to get resolved. The gauges are useful too, can see that a CAI is not needed for the EB, the intake air temp is ambient! 4 stars only due to the Eco tunes not living up to expectation.

First off, let me be clear...the only reason I'm giving this four stars instead of five is because the tuner is not compatible with Apple products, which caused me a two week delay in being able to load my tunes onto the tuner once I received the tuner. Software issues aside...AMAZING! My truck is 100% stock other than this tuner. I got the 87 economy, 87 perf/tow, 91 perf, and 91 perf/tow tunes. When I was finally able to get on a windows computer and put my tunes on the tuner, I had 87 octane in my gas tank, so I started with the 87 perf/tow. There was a definite increase in power, enough to put a huge smile on my face. Once I ran the 87 tank out, I put in 91 and loaded the 91 perf/tow then the 91 perf (can't tell much difference between these two). WOW!!!! My longbed, supercrew truck is about as fast as my 1998 Mustang Cobra with modifications was, I mean this thing is freaking FAST! There is extremely noticeable turbo lag in my truck (it's always been there), but once the boost kicks in with the 91 tune, the tires struggle to grip even with traction control on and it freaking takes off like hell. I haven't felt this kind of acceleration since my Cobra and I literally can't stop smiling the entire time I drive it. For work commutes when I can't really stomp on the gas, my mpg's (with 91 perf tune) are right where they were before the tune (you just have tons of extra power when needed). With 87 perf/tow, I get slightly better mpg's than before the tune, and I haven't honestly had it on 87 economy enough yet to give an accurate assessment of mpg's. In short, this tuner with 5-star tunes really wakes up the Ecoboost and helps it live up to its potential. If you have been questioning whether or not to get this, and have the money to do it, DO IT! You really won't regret it.

I did notice an improvement but it was not very significant but truth is I hadn't driven it much since loading the tune. About a week later I made a run in the truck and it was as if it woke up. The improvement was extremely noticeable to the point I am not sure I want to try the upper level tunes and pay a lot of money for the higher octane fuel. Call me impressed.

I ordered the SCT X4 with four custom tunes. The 87 tow & performance, 89 tow & performance, 93 tow and performance and 93 performance. I purchased the X4 on the Black Friday sale and it arrived quickly and undamaged. It took about 36 hours to get the tunes once I submitted the information as required but I thought that was pretty quick as I am sure they sold quite a few of these. I've used SCT tuners before on my Powerstrokes and was familiar with the process but the two loud bangs in the dash caught me off guard. Other than the noises and my the download process went well and I was soon up and running. Took it for a test drive and wow does it make a huge difference. It turned this truck into a missle! I bought this looking for improved fuel economy so I will have to see how it does on my daily commute. I run pretty close to the speed limits and use my cruise control so I am hoping for a couple of mpg's. The 93 performance & tow really woke this truck up and I can't imagine how insane the 93 performance must be. I averaged 17.2 mpg on 93 octane and mostly interstate driving so I will run this as usual for a couple of tanks and see how it does for mpg. Except for the tuner my truck is bone stock and will stay that way but this has me thinking I should put custom tunes on my wifes 6.2 Raptor now. If you want to wake up your Ecoboost I cannot imagine anything better than a Stage 3 custom tunes package, you will not regret it.

Received the tuner and tunes from 5 star quickly, however, the tuner was not functional. I tried troubleshooting the tuner with SCT for over 2 hours (not the most convenient thing to do when SCT is on eastern time, I'm on MST and have they limited support hours). After everything they suggested didn't work, the next solution was to send it to SCT and pay $100 to have them repair the brand new tuner. I contacted Stage 3 to see what they could do for me and Ryan(stage 3) was awesome. He coordinated with 5 star to get a replacement tuner sent out to me. 5 star preloaded and tested the replacement tuner prior to overnighting it to me. All I had to do was plug it in to the pickup and load the tunes. Stage 3 and 5 star went above and beyond to fix an issue that SCT should have. 5 star custom tunes are outstanding. 93 octane tune is like driving a completely different truck. I can break the rear end loose with electric locker locked completely through 1st gear. I spiked boost pressure at 19.5psi on 93 octane. Trans shifting is right on with torque converter locking right after shift.

I ordered the sct tuner with the 3 custom tunes. I ordered the 87 per/tow, 91 perf/tow and the 91 perf. I accidentally ordered the 87 eco tune, and they were very quick to respond to my emails to get the right tune sent out. I received the shipment pretty quick and had my truck tuned up fast! I ran the 87 tune first, then on refill, ran the other two. Quite a difference! I know a lot of people prefer the driveability of the perf/tow tunes, but i Really like the 91 performance tune the best. Very quick! Huge tq and it doesn't fall flat in the higher rpms at all. I didn't have the truck long enough to comment on the previous fuel economy, but it does ok now. If I utilize cruise control and follow semi trucks, I averaged 23.4 mpg at 64 mph (reset on the freeway, held speed for roughly 20 miles) Without the semi, it was around 22...not bad for a lifted truck on 35's. Great product..must have for this truck. Great tuner, 5 star was very quick to get the tune out and the truck runs great! Great interaction with stage 3! Highly recommend working with them for your build.

This programmer, along with 5star custom tuning, is the best bang for your buck purchase that you will make for your ecoboost f150! I researched the SCT X4 for months before purchasing and couldn't find anything negative about it. After programming my FX4 with the 5star 93 octane tune the only question that I was left with was 'why the hell did I wait so long?' My ecoboost is now an ecobeast and I haven't even gotten started yet. Best $400 I've ever spent!

Also getting maybe 0.2 better mpg which is quite surprising but welcomed. I'm sure when I try the economy tune mpg will be up a lot more. Easy to install, just make sure you have PC not mac.

I like the more compact design and the built in gauges to monitor the sensors. If you bought the X4 to turn off your rear O2 sensor yourself, the X4 doesn't have the capability for you to do it yourself. This process most be done by a tuner. However buying this product with 5 Star Tuning is a great option, they are very fast on getting you your tunes, it took about 24 hours to get my tune once I emailed them my information. I did the performance tow for 87 and 93 octane, the truck pulls very strong but fuel consumption goes up, so would advise to not drive around with those tunes. I also got the performance only tune for 93 octane, this tune is great pulls hard makes it fun to drive and it takes out the lag when you step on the gas pedal. I did get 1 miles per gallon extra from the tune. My truck has a K&N air filter, AFE cat less down pipe and a AFE 4 in exhaust.

Using 91 performance tune, can not believe the amount of power!! First weekend was a 3 hour trip and the increased fuel economy was a nice surprise for the added power. Did 10km/h over the speed limit the whole way and got down to 10.2L/100km through the mountains. Only thing that sucked was that the price of gas went sky high after I installed the tune but I don't want to go back to stock!

I had intake and exhaust already and that made a difference but with this it is a huge difference. In the 89 octane tune I get better MPG which is surprising. In the 93 I get worse but not by much and most of the lower economy is due to my heavy foot. Just ordered brake and suspension upgrades which I will need. Everyone at Stage 3 has been great thanks

Very pleased with my tunes! I first tried the 91 tow and didn't seem to notice a huge difference...so I quickly tried out the 93 performance! That made a huge difference. Based on the way the performance tune was described on this product page I imagined the truck being unbearable to drive on a daily drive basis because of super aggressive down shifting and rev holding, but I was delighted to find out this really wasn't the case. The truck is completely comfortable to drive on the 93 performance tune, but the throttle is VERY sensitive! It's also great to be able to change my speed limiter, looking forward to easier and safer passes on the highway. This SCT tuner is very high quality, much nicer than the $1300+ diesel tuner I used to have on my old truck. I'll admit though, there doesn't seem to be really anything custom about these tunes from 5 star in the sense that I think the only thing that's custom to them is that the tuner takes into account your axle gearing. But let me clarify, these tunes are much better than stock.

This tuner is super easy to use and the custom tune process couldn't be any easier. I've already recommended this to three other people in about 4 weeks. They're all blown away by how much power the SCT tuner is able to get out of the Ecoboost. The week after installing the tunes I towed an 8,800 lb car and trailer about 2,000 miles round trip and the truck didn't struggle one bit. Never downshifted hard a single time. Even put it in cruise control for most of the trip. The guys as 5-Star tunes know the trucks inside and out. Absolutely worth the investment.

Worth every penny so far. Living in WV and rolling on 33's put a damper on the fuel mileage until i went with the SCT X4 with the custom 5 star tunes. I picked up 2.5 mpg with the 87 economy tune. On the 87 performance/tow i noticed very impressive gains and about a 1.5 mpg increase. I have not got to play with the 93 performance yet but I'm looking forward to it. In the flatter states i could see this increasing the mileage by 3-4 easily. I'm very happy with this purchase and the ease of install was excellent.

After reading all of the reviews I decided to purchase this tuner with three custom tunes. Many people saying it was night and day difference. I guess every vehicle is different. I notice change in the shift points and the turbo lag comes and goes versus always being there. But I personally didn’t get to experience a night and day change with the tunes. I mostly purchased it to get more towing power for my camper. Won’t be pulling it again until this summer to see the difference with it. My truck pulls my 33’ camper just fine locally Just wanting more power and different shift points for the hills on the highways when towing at higher rpm. When I first got the tuner hooked to my truck and did the CAN tune my truck went haywire with all types of warning lights on the dash and the tuner would not communicate so I could go back to stock nor would my truck start. I was in panic mode due to it being on a Saturday and no one was available to answer my call due to being a weekend. I Missed a days worth of work Monday hoping to get my truck fixed. I had great customer service. They changed some stuff on my tuner and got it Communicating with my truck. I would recommend before putting a tuner on your truck to go to the dealership and for $100 have them put the newest PCM on your truck. 5star had me to do this before they where able to do custom tunes. Now that was a night and day change between Factory tunes. That’s probably why I had higher expectations of five star custom tune. I was so impressed with the factory updated PCM I was expecting a much bigger change with a custom tune. But it is what it is. Spent $500 for tuner and $100 at dealer for updated PCM. I believe I would have been happy with just the factory updated PCM. Just didn’t seem to get a $500 difference for factory. I’m sure if I had a custom intake and exhaust it probably would be a different experience. Have not tried to 93 octane Performance. I’ve only done the economy and the 87 octane performance/towing.

Customer Question Would I need a new tune with plugs with a different gap than OEM.

Asked by: John - 4/26/2024
Customer Answer No, you would not need to have a new tune or make any tune adjustments for spark plugs or changing the spark plug gap. You can however close the gap some with a custom tune, and it's typically recommended to do so.

Customer Question Is this tuner limited to one vehicle? And does it have to remain plugged in after the tune has synced with the truck?

Asked by: Jesse - 4/20/2020
Customer Answer This device can only tune one vehicle at a time. Once it tunes a vehicle, it becomes "married" to that vehicle's strategy. After tuning, the device does not need to stay plugged in. It uploads whatever tune you've chosen directly to your truck's PCM. The reason it needs be plugged in is to datalog or to use the device's gauges.

Customer Question I purchased this several years ago for my 2012 and only recently started using the gauges/datalog feature full time. Here in Utah at about 5,600+ ft on the 91 performance tune I've only managed to spike 16.81 p.s.i. With an average high of 14-15 p.s.i. Is this normal, or should I be seeing more boost out of the tune?

Asked by: Richard Snodgrass - 4/8/2018
Customer Answer That's fairly normal, due to the altitude. The thinner the air is to begin with, the less that it compresses in the motor. If you're staying up that high full-time (or nearly full-time), we can see about setting you up with a more thorough datalog so that 5-Star can create high-altitude specific tune(s). That all being said, if the truck is running fine, then you absolutely do not have to.

Customer Answer The X4 does not come standard with a mount. A windshield suction cub mount can be purchased separately here. 5-Star can write High-Altitude tunes for your truck, and if you spend most of your time above 3,000ft, 5-Star generally recommends getting a tune tailored for high-altitude use. Customer Question Which tunes would you recommend if I’m not ever off-roading or towing? With occasional long trips of around 500mi for the weekend.

Asked by: Rob - 11/24/2017
Customer Answer 5-Star's Performance/Tow tunes are still probably your best bet, since they'll get the best highway fuel economy, add power, and won't have as stiff of shifting as the outright Performance Tunes. In general, for folks in your situation, we recommend getting a Performance/Tow in the highest octane that you have readily available, a Performance/Tow in a lower-tier octane (in case you travel somewhere that only has 87 or 89 octane), and possibly a higher octane Performance Tune in case you want to mess around.

Customer Question What is the advantage of the SCT Livewire over the X4?

Asked by: RB - 8/17/2017
Customer Answer The Livewire has a larger, touchscreen display, which makes it a bit better for monitoring than the X4. Other than that, their overall functionality is very similar.

Customer Question I have an Edge CTS for my 2014 F150 Ecoboost, how do the canned tunes on this differ from the custom tunes provided by 5-Star Custom Tunes. Is there that much of a difference? I have a MBRP Catback exhaust, plugs gapped at .30, AFE CAI, AFE Intercooler, AFE Cold Charge Pipe and Hot Side Intercooler pipes and the mega catch can.

Asked by: Glenn Lepsik - 8/16/2017
Customer Answer 5-Star's tunes add more power, provide more improvements to shifting than Edge's tunes, and can help you compensate for more powerful modifications you make down the road (downpipes, turbo upgrades, water-meth, etc.), while Edge's tunes cannot.

Customer Question with this tuner am I able to adjust top speed or remove completely that the factory has preselected?

Asked by: Eric - 5/15/2017
Customer Answer On non-warrantied tunes, you can adjust the truck's speed limiter, or even completely remove it. That being said, we DO NOT recommend taking these trucks above 125mph, due to the likelihood of driveshaft failure at those speeds.

Customer Question i have a 2011 ford f150 ecoboost, what performance parts do i need to put on my truck to run 91 octane or 93, please help i was running 91 and i started having a turbo lag and power loss?

Asked by: javiersaenz - 3/20/2017
Customer Answer 5-Star's tuning does not require additional bolt-on parts. If you're experiencing power loss with your truck, you should check its spark plugs and make sure you have SP-534 iridium plugs that are properly gapped. Also check and see if you're getting moisture ingestion from your intercooler and that your throttle body is clean.

Customer Question how much mpg gain will your 87 economy tune will add?. Looking to install into my parents 2012 ecoboost.

Asked by: Ben - 10/29/2016
Customer Answer That's going to depend on what kind of driving they're doing. In general, the Economy Tunes are really only meant for city driving in stop-and-go traffic. In those situations, you can see gains of 2-4mpg or more. For highway and rural driving, your better bet would be the Performance/Tow tune, which can generally add 2mpg or more, as long you drive conservatively.

Asked by: JUSTIN - 10/18/2016

Customer Question So I just ordered the x4. I currently have a DiabloSport Trinity 93 Octane tune on the truck. When I get my blank x4, do I need to revert back to the factory tune on my DiabloSport to get the ECU strategy codes? Or can I just keep my current tune and plug the x4 in?

Asked by: Zack Hayley - 7/28/2016
Customer Answer We recommend returning your truck back to stock with your Diablosport device before tuning with the SCT, not because of any strategy code change, but because the SCT device will store whatever tune is in your truck as the stock file when you tune with the X4, and you want the tune in the truck to actually be your factory tuning files.

Customer Question I currently have a DiabloSport Trinity running the 93 Octane Canned tune. Will I see or feel any benefit from getting an SCT x4 with custom tuning? I have a 2011 Eco with aFe Stage 2 CAI and Turbosmart BOV's.

Asked by: Zack - 7/26/2016
Customer Answer You'd likely see a slight bump in power output with a custom tune over one of Diablosport's pre-loaded tunes. Transmission function and shifting, however, is usually much improved with a custom tune, as there's a lot of variation between Ford's strategies.

Customer Question Hi, I bought a used 2013 F-150 Ecoboost. If there is a custom tune already installed, will the X4 pick that up and overwrite? If so, then is my stock tune pretty much gone at that point? Thanks, Jerry

Asked by: Jerry - 7/19/2016
Customer Answer Pretty much. Any additional tuning you do will cause the X4 to save the tune currently in your truck as your factory tune. If you want to start over from scratch, you can go to your nearest Ford Service center to get a flash back to a factory strategy, though they'd likely charge you.

Customer Question Am I able to calibrate my speedometer because I am running 35 inch tires?

Asked by: Mike - 7/9/2016
Customer Answer Yep. You'll submit your tire size after you purchase the tuner, and you'll be able to change your tire size with the device if you want to go bigger/smaller/different. The device does use "revs per mile" for the speedometer/odometer calculation, so you'll need to convert properly to a get a correct reading if you change you tire size in the future.

Customer Question When choosing the custom Tunes If I choose example "91 Octane Performance" is this the fuel that is required to be ran in the vehicle from then on out while programed with that tune?

Asked by: Darrel - 5/6/2016
Customer Answer Pretty much. The octane rating of the tune is the minimum octane fuel that you can use. So for a 91 octane Performance Tune, you would have to use 91 octane gasoline or higher, but never lower due to detonation risks.

Customer Question On SCT's website, they claim the tuner alone will add 74 horsepower and 124 foot-pounds of torque. Are these numbers accurate? Does that mean with 5-star custom tuning, these numbers will be even larger?

Asked by: Landon - 4/7/2016
Customer Answer As far as accuracy goes, they are, but they also kinda aren't, mainly because every dyno is different and calibrated in a multitude of various ways. I believe SCT also measures by max gains instead of peak-to-peak gains, which skews their numbers high. In general, 5-Star's custom tunes will make more power than SCT's preloaded tunes, but what your truck may show on the dyno is going to to depend on the dyno you're using, your truck's drivetrain, the fuel octane being used, and the particular tune being used.

Customer Question Is there an increased risk of inter-cooler condensation while tuned? If so is there a fix?

Asked by: Nick - 3/22/2016
Customer Answer Tuning won't increase the chances of intercooler condensation or moisture build-up. Intercooler condensation is caused by both PCV blow-by and ambient conditions. The only real fix is to clean out your intercooler and decide on whether to run a catch can system (and which one) or to drill a hole in your intercooler, which we really don't recommend.

Customer Question Hello I am look at purchasing the SCT x4 tuner for my 2013 F-150 ecoboost screw. A few questions though. 1. How much hp will I gain over the stock tune that is on the truck? 2. Will I be able to return the truck to stock tune? 3. Will I need to return the truck back to stock tune if I return the truck to a dealer? 4. Where can I find a breakdown of all the tunes so I know which ones to get uploaded.

Asked by: klay - 3/20/2016
Customer Answer 1). That entirely depends on the tunes you choose and for what fuel octane they're for. 5-Star's test truck picked up over 100lb-ft of torque and 70 horsepower using a 93 octane performance tune. 2). The SCT X4 saves a copy of your factory tune, and allows you to return the truck to stock, if need be. 3). It's recommended, mostly because dealerships will perform software updates as part of Ford-issued TSBs, which can cause issues with tuned trucks. 4). A breakdown of tunes and a wealth of other information can be found in our listing for this product.

Asked by: blaine - 3/1/2016
Customer Answer A standard X4 without custom tunes would work fine with those modifications, as none of them strictly require a custom tune. However, this package comes 5-Star custom tunes, which will give you better gains and drivability than SCT's canned tunes.

Customer Question I have a 2013 Ecoboost with 66,000 miles on it. Will the warranty take effect as soon as I purchase the tuner or does it take effect from the initial purchase of the vehicle back in 2012?

Asked by: Chris - 2/26/2016
Customer Answer The warranty time period and mileage are based on the total age and odometer reading of your truck. So in your case, your truck wouldn't qualify for the 5-year/60,000 mile warranty, due to the fact that its total odometer reading is already beyond our 60,000 mile limit. While you would qualify for our 6-year/100,000 mile warranty, you would only get three years or 34,000 miles worth of coverage, which honestly, probably isn't worth the additional cost.

Customer Question I read a review that indicated that after installing the tune the vehicle would not pass emissions. The review indicated that the readiness monitors would not clear with the customer tune. Can you tell me if this is true for a 2011 Ford F150 Ecoboost? Robert King

Asked by: ROBERT KING - 2/25/2016
Customer Answer Whether or not a truck will pass emissions is dependent on the modifications being used in conjunction with the tuning. On a stock truck with the factory downpipes, the tuning will not cause any issues passing emissions due to oxygen sensor readiness. However, on a truck with downpipes (catted or off-road), 5-Star disables the rear O2 sensors to eliminate the check engine light, but disabling the O2 sensors will still cause a readiness code that will be picked up by OBD-II emissions testing. The only exception is Kooks GREEN Catted Downpipes, which won't pop a CEL and don't require the O2 sensors to be disabled.

Customer Question Is it safer to use higher octane gas for the actual tune your running or it doesn't matter? For example: Using 93 octane gas on a 91 tune, using 89 octane gas on a 87 tune, and etc.

Asked by: Brandon - 2/24/2016
Customer Answer Yep. You can always use a higher octane than what you're tune is made for, and it can be a good idea if you're wary of your local fuel quality or if you live in an extreme climate. Here in Phoenix, we have both problems, and during the summer, running an 89 octane tune with 91 octane gas gives an extra margin of safety when using a truck when its 110°+ Fahrenheit and there's extra load on the motor from blasting the A/C. However, you can NEVER use an octane that's LOWER than what you're tuned for. That can lead to serious problems with your engine.

Customer Question I live at 4500 ft does your tunes take elevation into account? Also the experts say 85 octane fuel is the same as 87 at this elevation so our pumps are usually 85, 87 and either 89 or 91 what is your recommendations? Also could we do a factory tune as option 4? Thanks Jason

Asked by: Jason - 2/9/2016
Customer Answer In general, 5-Star recommends doing specialty altitude tunes above 5000ft, so while 4500ft is below that figure, if you are in an area with varying elevation and are going to be above 5000ft, then getting high-altitude variations of the tunes is recommended. We recommend sticking with 87 octane and above, as 85 octane can cause poor performance if you do come down from altitude. The SCT device stores your factory tune on its own, and an additional factory tune is not required.

Customer Question Two Questions 1) Currently my 2013 LIMITED 3.5l ECOBOOST adapts to different fuels (Octane) Why do I need a tune for 87 Octane fuel and another one for 91 Octane. Shouldn’t the Tune Adapt like the OEM Program does? 2) My Truck has a selection for TOW/HAUL mode on the shifter. How will the canned TUNE react to my TOW/HAUL mode selection? Will it disable this feature?

Asked by: LASERNAV - 1/31/2016
Customer Answer 1). The factory tuning doesn't really adapt (though the PCM does have adaptive learning functionality for your driving, which is partially based on octane), it's just so conservative that you can use lower grade fuel without effecting overall functionality. The tuning from 5-Star has extremely specific parameters and ignition timings, which are designed based on the specific octane of the tune to generate much more power than stock. 2). Neither SCT's canned tunes or 5-Star's custom tunes effect your truck's Tow/Haul mode, as that's specific to general transmission functionality. Granted, if you get 5-Star's Performance/Tow tunes, you likely won't need to worry about manually selecting Tow/Haul mode much.

Customer Question I just installed larger tires will this tuner do the recalibration of the speedo, and I have a totally stock truck other wise can this tuner give me better mpg with a tune?

Asked by: Steve Hill - 1/24/2016
Customer Answer The tuner can recalibrate your truck's PCM for larger tires. MPG gains will depend on your choice of tune, but generally, 5-Star's higher octane Performance/Tow tunes can squeeze out 1-2 extra highway MPGs over the stock tuning, assuming you're actually driving like you want to get good fuel mileage.

Asked by: Jeffrey Ramos - 10/28/2015
Customer Answer As long as the engine is well-maintained and running in good condition, 5-Star's custom tunes should not overly effect the stresses put on the engine, transmission, or driveline. However, on an engine with that many miles, we strongly recommend giving your entire driveline a once over to check for wear and tear and fix any possible issues before tuning.

Customer Question I can't decide between the SCT X4 and the Superchips Flashpaq. Lots of feedback on gains with an Ecoboost but what about a 2012 F-150 6.2L. The Superchip claims a nice increase. What should I expect with a 87-93 performance tune? Top end power only or throughout the curve? I have taller tires and will be adding a cold air intake but that's about it.

Asked by: Billy - 10/13/2015
Customer Answer 5-Star's X4 with 6.2L V8 Custom Tuning is located right here. 5-Star's tuning provides power through the entire rev range, but adds a bunch of power on the low-end, which will help you turn those bigger tires.

Customer Question I'm very interested in getting one of these tuners, and getting the 100k warranty! Talk about a great way to get your truck running right and on the road for a long time! I'm wondering a little bit about how the warranty works. Would I still be able to maintain the stage 3 warranty if I didn't want to get TSB's done by ford? It's my understanding I'd have to pay out of pocket to have any TSB done, and I've read that they're hardly effective and really just bandaids. I suspect that a tune alone would get my truck running better than any TSB could ever indirectly fix some issue with my truck Have y'all dealt with a lot of warranty claims?

Asked by: Ian - 10/12/2015
Customer Answer We'll require all of the latest TSBs to be performed for our Warranty Coverage. While Ford's hardware changes for their TSBs are fairly useless, but the software updates are fairly useful beyond fixing some of the issues Ford had with the EcoBoost trucks, and are necessary so that 5-Star can build you your warrantied tunes. Usually, most TSB issues updates are done at no charge, since they're mandated by Ford, however, some customers do have issues. If you have a problem with your dealership providing you an update, please call us directly at 1-877-578-2433.

Customer Question You can tack this onto my other question if you're able! I was just reading over the warranty packet, and it looks like the warranty only applies to 2015+ trucks, is that true? Or am I not understanding correctly?

Asked by: Ian - 10/12/2015
Customer Answer The correct warranty information for the 2009-2014 F150s is located here.

Customer Question I have a 2014 F150 Ecoboost Limited. My main interest is to get the speedometer and odometer calibrated after installing different size tires. Is the a tuner just for that purpose without having to pay for the other features? I don't do any hauling or towing and I'm not interested in more power or performance. My truck gets great fuel mileage as it is.

Asked by: Dane - 9/17/2015
Customer Answer Most actual tuning devices will be overkill for simply adjusting for tire size. If that's your sole goal, you should just see how much your local Ford dealership or authorized service center would charge you, as they can simply adjust the sizes in their IDS tools.

Customer Question I live in an area that uses 10% ethanol. will the tunes work switching from blend to non-blend fuels?

Asked by: Randy - 8/17/2015
Customer Answer The tunes will work fine with 10% ethanol fuel blends, as long as you stick to the correct fuel octane of the tune you're currently running.

Customer Question I frequently use my F150 off road. Can I adjust or disable the TPMS system to allow me to air down my tires with the SCTX4 tuner?

Asked by: Frank - 8/9/2015
Customer Answer None of SCT's tuning devices are capable of disabling your truck's TPMS system, nor can custom tunes.

Customer Question Through reading the Q&A i see some people purchased this with multiple Octane ratings in their custom tunes package. If i consistantly run 89 Octane (midgrade here in NC) will the other tunes such as 91 Performance do any good?

Asked by: Tommy - 6/5/2015
Customer Answer No, in fact, we strongly discourage running octane lower than what your tuning is for, so if you only use 89 octane and will never use 91 or 93, you'd be better off just getting several 89 octane tunes. That beings said, using 91 octane tunes with 91 octane fuel does provide a slight bump in both performance and fuel economy.

Customer Question If I get bigger tires will I need to get new tunes to fit the tire size? And if so if I buy the tires from Stage 3 are the tunes covered by the Lifetime Tunes?

Asked by: Josh - 5/29/2015
Customer Answer On non-warrantied tunes, you can adjust the tire size yourself using the X4, as that feature is unlocked. On warrantied, tunes, we would build you new tunes at no charge under our Lifetime Tunes program. If you are going to adjust tire yourself, you do need to covert the size of the tire over to "revs per mile".

Customer Question What info is being monitored or logged when in normal use? Does it monitor boost, MPGs, etc? There is a pic above with it mounted to the a-pillar. Do you really need to monitor what's going on when in use?

Asked by: Jon M - 5/4/2015
Customer Answer You can monitor almost any information that's output from the OBD-II port, which is actually quite a lot on the EcoBoost F150s. In the image you're referencing, it's actually mounted on the windshield using SCT's X4 Suction Cup Mount. You by no means need to monitor, but some folks like to.

Customer Question I have question about an 87 octane performance tune. I live in Colorado (elevation from 4500-6200 feet)and the only octane rating I've seen were 85/87/91. Could I get this with a 97 performance tune? Also, what would you recommend because this is a daily driver and the occasional boat (8K lbs) hauler. Thanks

Asked by: Shon - 4/28/2015
Customer Answer 5-Star doesn't typically offer pure Performance tunes in 87 octane, due to the fact that so much timing has be pulled due to the lower fuel octane that power differences between the Performance/Tows aren't as noticeable, but still have pretty firm shifting. Since you are at altitude, you may want to consider calling us directly so we can have 5-Star build you high-altitude variations of those tunes so your truck runs a bit better.

Customer Question I purchased this item from Stage 3 about a month ago. All of my custom tunes from 5-Star work great except for the Performance/Towing Tune. When I use it my Service AdvanceTrac light comes on, my blinkers quit working, and when I hammer on the throttle the whole truck shakes like the transmission or the turbos can't catch up. What might cause this?

Asked by: Josh Reeves - 4/25/2015
Customer Answer It sounds like a couple of things could be going on. For your shacking while under throttle, that could be a spark plug issue. The AdvancedTrac and turn signal issues could indicate an incomplete load of the tune or an error on the tuning device. Whatever the case, your best bet would be to call us directly at 1-877-578-2433 so we can help you get these issues resolved ASAP.

Customer Question Does the Sct X4 have an option to change the top speed of the vehicle?

Asked by: Chris Spencer - 4/14/2015
Customer Answer 5-Star adjusts the speed limiter of the EcoBoost F150s up to 125mph on non-warrantied tunes, which is about as fast you want to go with the stock driveshafts in the truck.

Customer Question I have been going back and forth between getting a tuner with custom tunes or getting something like the Edge CTS. I current have a 2011 Eco with 71000 miles, AFE Stage 2 intake, Solo 4" exhaust with the Mach-46 muffler, and some new motorcraft spark plugs from you all that I believe came gapped at .030. It seems as though my mileage has gone to crap since installing my intake, averaging 10.7 in the city and barely getting above 15 on the highway. Which would you all recommend? And can custom tunes be downloaded to a Mac computer?

Asked by: Knight - 3/8/2015
Customer Answer Custom tunes are always preferable over more standard "canned" tunes, however, if you saw that large of a mileage drop, you may want to consider giving your install a once-over and possibly looking into other potential causes. The only issue is that SCT's software is not compatible with OSX. You would need to run a copy of Windows 7 in either Boot Camp or Parallels in order for the device to work with your computer.

Customer Question Will I be able to tow with the 87 economy tune? Will this hurt the truck? If I use the 87 performance/tow or 93 performance will that still help my MPGs?

Asked by: Harrison - 3/6/2015
Customer Answer You could tow with the economy tunes, I just don't recommend it, since the shift points and boost pressure are designed to improve MPGs and not tow a heavy load. You'd be looking at some pretty hairy driving. All of the other tunes will improve fuel economy to some degree, with the 91 and 93 octane tunes having the most noticeable MPG gains.

Customer Question In one of the answers to another question you state "We haven't had reliability problems with any of 5-Star's tunes on trucks that are properly maintained and updated with the latest TSBs." If I understand the process correctly, you have to exhibit symptoms of issues that pertain to a particular TSB before the dealer will update? Is that not the case or if so, how do you get around that to get your truck to a point that it can be tuned?

Asked by: joesta - 12/17/2014
Customer Answer Keep in mind that the only TSBs we really care about are Ford's PCM reflashes, and not any mechanical maintenance, and in general, those reflashes are performed as part of standard maintenance or if you take your truck in for warranty work. Now, we have had some dealerships refuse to perform TSB updates without the truck expressing symptoms, but those cases have been rare, and the majority of customers were able to get these updates successfully completed without any hassles. Most trucks at this point in the production cycle are fully up to date. If you do have issues getting your Ford dealer to honor TSB updates or if you want to see if your truck's up to date, give us a call directly at 1-877-578-2433.

Customer Question Can you explain the 5 five different custom tunes so a person that doesn't know much about an automobile can understand the differences? They seem to overlap each other and choosing 5 out of 14 tunes is difficult.

Asked by: Tim - 10/18/2014
Customer Answer Starting from lowest gains to biggest: "Trans Only" tunes don't add any power to your truck, but they do adjust the shifting, gear holding, and shift pressures of your transmission to help give your truck improved drivability. "Economy" tunes are designed to increase fuel economy by limiting the amount of time your truck uses its turbochargers and by adjusting shifter to be more economy-focused. "Performance/Tow" tunes jump up the power levels of your truck significantly while adjust shift patterns and pressures for firmer shifts and longer gear holding, which makes these tunes great for daily driving or towing. "Performance" tunes offer the most power, and have shift points and pressures that get your truck going in a hurry at the expense of some drivability.

Customer Question What all do the Trans tunes entail ?

Asked by: Travis 13 Ecoboost - 4/24/2014
Customer Answer The transmission only tuning alters your truck's shift points, converter lockup, shift pressure, and torque reduction management, which all works together to make shifting slightly firmer while improving the drivability of your truck for daily use.

Customer Question Are variables specific to my truck setup (provided in custom tuning info email) already included in each custom tune? I noticed the variables on the custom tunes read "stock". Does stock mean the info i submitted, or do I need to go back and update my changes for tire size (etc) each time i tune? I dont want to setup tune incorrectly or have errors.

Asked by: Alberto Salazar - 4/8/2014
Customer Answer "Stock" would be whatever tire size you've already submitted for your initial tune, so you don't need to change it if your wheels and tires haven't changed. The only time you need to mess with that setting is if you've changed tire sizes since you ordered your tuning and submitted us your information.

Customer Question i am curious how a custom tune will void the warranty but a canned tune may not? if you can go back to stock settings regardless, whats the difference?

Asked by: mark 2012 f150 fx4 - 3/21/2014
Customer Answer Custom tuning and "canned" can both result in Powertrain repairs not being covered under a warranty. Returning the truck to stock doesn't "erase" evidence that a tune was installed on vehicle, though there are some methods of hiding the fact that your truck was tuned at the dealership level.
