ICON Vehicle Dynamics is the off-road suspension authority for Toyota truck owners and one of the most respected names in the broader aftermarket. Founded in Riverside, California in 2007, ICON built its reputation on engineering excellence, race-bred valving philosophy, and obsessive support for the Toyota Tacoma, 4Runner, and Tundra platforms. Today ICON's catalog also covers F-150, Raptor, Super Duty, Ranger, Bronco, Ram, Chevy, GMC, and Jeep applications, but the core of the brand still beats Toyota.
ICON's lineup is built around four pillars: 2.5 Series Velocity Sensitive coilovers and shocks (the volume product), 2.5 VS RR CDC adjustable coilovers (mid-tier), 3.0 Series and 3.0 Internal Bypass shocks (premium off-road and race), and Delta Joint Upper Control Arms (the gold standard in maintenance-free UCAs). Stage 3 stocks the full ICON catalog with free shipping over $70. Visit the official ICON Vehicle Dynamics website for manufacturer specs and warranty registration. Three reasons. First, focus: where most suspension brands try to cover every chassis in North America, ICON went deep on Toyota first and earned a reputation for nailing the geometry, valving, and spring rates on Tacoma, 4Runner, Tundra, FJ Cruiser, and Land Cruiser. Second, race pedigree: ICON has a long history in Ultra4 racing, KOH, and Baja, and that valving experience shows up in every retail shock. Third, the Delta Joint: ICON invented the sealed high-misalignment ball joint that effectively replaced the uniball/ball joint dilemma for UCAs. The Delta Joint alone is the reason many off-road builders default to ICON.
Three questions narrow it down.
One: how much do you weigh the truck down? ICON sells "standard" and "Heavy Duty" (HD) tunes for most coilovers. HD tunes have stiffer spring rates engineered for owners running steel bumpers, winches, roof racks, drawer systems, RTTs, or sliders. Pick HD if you carry weight. Pick standard if you run a stock-weight truck.
Two: do you want adjustability? ICON's standard 2.5 VS RR coilovers are pre-valved with no external adjuster. The CDC (Compression Damping Control) variant adds an external knob that lets you tune compression damping for street vs trail. CDC is the closest ICON equivalent to FOX DSC.
Three: how serious is the off-road use? Casual trail use is fine on 2.5 VS RR. Regular trail and washboard use benefits from 2.5 VS RR CDC for adjustability. Hard off-road, desert running, and pre-runner builds need 3.0 Series or 3.0 Internal Bypass shocks.
ICON's flagship coilover. 2.5 inch body, remote reservoir, Velocity Sensitive valving, available in standard and HD spring tunes. The VS RR is the right answer for the majority of ICON customers: it bolts in, lifts the truck within the kit's range, dramatically improves on-road and off-road ride quality, and pairs with 2.5 RR rear shocks for a complete suspension overhaul. Most ICON customers run this exact configuration.
Same hardware as the VS RR but with the addition of an external Compression Damping Control adjuster. CDC is a single-knob adjuster that lets you tune compression damping in real time without disassembling the shock. Step up to CDC if you want to dial the truck softer for street and firmer for the trail, or if you change driving conditions often. Cost premium over standard VS RR is moderate.
The 3.0 inch body holds substantially more oil and dissipates heat dramatically better than the 2.5. ICON's 3.0 RR coilovers are engineered for sustained high-speed off-road duty, heavy desert use, and pre-runner builds. Overkill for trail rigs and daily drivers, but the right spec for owners who actually run the truck hard for hours at a time.
Internal Bypass shocks have additional internal oil passages that change damping force at different points in shock travel. The result: supple at small inputs (street comfort), firm at big inputs (off-road impacts). ICON's 3.0 IB shocks compete directly with FOX 3.0 Bypass and are what serious off-road builders run on trophy-truck-adjacent vehicles. Available with optional CDC adjuster on select fitments.
ICON's Delta Joint is a sealed, high-misalignment ball joint that lasts longer than a uniball, articulates further than a factory ball joint, and requires zero maintenance. Tubular UCAs use a welded steel tube construction and the Delta Joint. Billet Delta Joint UCAs use CNC-machined billet construction, weigh less, and have a premium fit and finish. Both are ICON's answer to the UCA question on lifted F-150, Tacoma, Tundra, 4Runner, and other platforms.
Beyond shocks, ICON makes platform-specific sway bar systems for Tacoma and 4Runner that improve articulation off-road without giving up on-road stability, plus body mount relocation kits that allow larger tires on Tacoma and 4Runner without rubbing.
VS valving means the shock damping force varies based on shaft velocity, soft at low velocities (small bumps, body roll) and progressively firmer at higher velocities (sharp impacts). The result is a shock that feels comfortable on broken pavement but firms up automatically when the terrain gets rough. VS is ICON's core valving philosophy across all 2.5 and 3.0 series shocks.
CDC is an external single-knob adjuster that tunes compression damping force on the shock. Soft = better street comfort. Firm = better off-road impact absorption. CDC is ICON's equivalent to FOX DSC, with one knob instead of two (FOX DSC controls high-speed and low-speed compression independently). For most users, the simpler CDC adjustment is plenty of tunability without overcomplication.
IB shocks have multiple internal oil passages that change damping force at different shock travel positions. Near ride height the shock is supple. Toward end of travel the shock firms up dramatically. This is the same engineering principle as FOX Bypass shocks. Internal Bypass is offered in ICON's 3.0 series for serious off-road and race use.
ICON's signature ball joint replacement for UCAs. The Delta Joint uses a sealed, high-misalignment design that articulates further than a factory ball joint, lasts longer than a uniball, and never needs greasing. Delta Joint UCAs are the answer to the long-running uniball-versus-ball-joint debate on lifted trucks.
ICON offers HD spring rates and revalved damping on most coilovers for owners who carry meaningful weight (steel bumpers, winches, RTT, drawer systems, sliders). The HD tune prevents nose-diving and front-end sag that happens when standard-tune coilovers are loaded with accessories. If you wheel an overland-built Tacoma or 4Runner, HD is the right pick.
ICON's Stage Kits are bolt-in lift kit packages that take the guesswork out of pairing components. Each Stage adds capability and price.
Stage 1: spacer lift only (entry leveling, no shock change). The cheapest way to get a leveled stance, but compromises ride and shock life. Not recommended for most customers, ICON includes it for budget shoppers.
Stage 2: 2.5 VS RR front coilovers + 2.5 VS RR rear shocks. The most popular ICON kit. Bolt-in suspension upgrade with leveling and dramatically improved ride quality.
Stage 3: Stage 2 plus Tubular Delta Joint UCAs. The right answer when running 2 inches or more of front lift, since the UCAs restore proper geometry and free up droop travel.
Stage 4: Stage 3 plus an add-a-leaf, replacement leaf pack, or rear coil springs (depending on platform) to add rear lift to match the front. Used when you want a balanced lifted stance, not just a level.
Stage 6, 7, 10: ICON's progressively bigger lift packages, typically using 3.0 series coilovers and shocks, additional steering and brake line components, and platform-specific extras for serious off-road and overlanding builds.
ICON's flagship platform. Stage 2 with 2.5 VS RR coilovers and 2.5 RR rear shocks is the volume pick for stock-weight trucks. Step up to Stage 3 with Delta Joint UCAs if running 2 inches or more of front lift. Step up to HD tune if running steel bumpers, winch, or overland weight. Hard off-road or pre-runner Tacomas should look at Stage 6 or 7 with 3.0 Series shocks. The 2024+ Tacoma platform has rolling ICON releases as ICON validates fitments.
Same Stage Kit ladder as Tacoma. Stage 2 with 2.5 VS RR is the volume pick. Stage 3 adds the Delta Joint UCAs for lifted 4Runners. HD tune is essential for 4Runners running drawers, RTT, and overland weight (which is most of them). The new 2025+ 4Runner is releasing fitments in stages.
Tundra is heavy and benefits from the HD tune. Stage 2 with 2.5 VS RR HD coilovers and rear shocks is the right answer for most owners. The 3.0 Series steps up for serious off-road use. The 2022+ Tundra has dedicated ICON fitments now that the platform has matured.
F-150 ICON support centers on the 2.5 VS RR coilovers paired with 2.5 RR rear shocks for the volume bolt-in. Step up to CDC for adjustability. Add Delta Joint UCAs at 2 inches of lift. The 2021+ F-150 has dedicated ICON Stage Kits in the standard and HD tunes.
Raptor came with FOX from the factory. ICON does offer Raptor coilovers and shocks for owners who want to switch brands or rebuild after the OEM FOX wears out, but most Raptor owners stay in the FOX ecosystem for fitment and parts availability. ICON makes more sense on Raptor as a UCA upgrade than as a complete suspension swap.
ICON support on Super Duty is more limited than on lighter Ford and Toyota platforms. ICON does sell coilover conversions and steering stabilizers for Super Duty, but FOX 2.5 Performance Elite and Bilstein 5100 are the more common picks for Super Duty trucks. If you specifically want ICON on a Super Duty, the 2.5 VS RR is available, but cross-shop FOX Performance Elite first.
The 2019-2023 Ranger has solid ICON support with Stage 2 VS RR coilover packages. The new 2024+ Ranger and Ranger Raptor are still building out their ICON catalog through 2026.
Bronco gets ICON 2.5 VS RR Stage Kits in standard and HD tunes. The Bronco's chassis and suspension geometry suit ICON's Toyota-derived valving philosophy well, and ICON has invested heavily in Bronco-specific fitments.
Ram 1500 ICON support includes 2.5 VS RR coilovers and rear shocks for both 2009-2018 and 2019-2025 platforms, plus Delta Joint UCAs for lifted Rams. ICON is a strong choice for Ram owners who want a Tacoma-grade off-road feel on a half-ton platform.
ICON's Jeep lineup includes 2.5 VS RR Series shocks, 3.0 Series shocks for serious off-road, body mount kits, and lift kit packages. Many Jeep owners cross-shop ICON against FOX and King for Wrangler and Gladiator builds.
The closest direct competitor in the premium off-road space. Both make excellent 2.5 and 3.0 coilovers. ICON tends to ride slightly softer and more "settled" out of the box, FOX tends to ride slightly tighter and more "performance" feeling. ICON's CDC is a single-knob compression adjuster; FOX DSC is a dual-knob high-speed and low-speed compression adjuster, slightly more tunable. FOX wins on OEM partnerships (Raptor) and Live Valve adaptive damping (no ICON equivalent). ICON wins on Toyota truck platform depth and the Delta Joint UCA. For Toyota trucks, ICON is the default. For Ford trucks, FOX is the default. Both are excellent.
Different tiers and different customers. Bilstein's volume sellers (5100, 6112) are entry-level shocks at value pricing. ICON's volume seller (2.5 VS RR) is a mid-tier premium coilover at premium pricing. Bilstein for daily-driven trucks at value. ICON for serious off-road builds with adjustable damping and Delta Joint UCAs. They do not really compete head-to-head, they serve different customers.
King is the boutique race shock. ICON's 3.0 Series competes directly with King 2.5 and 3.0 coilovers. King has slightly more racing prestige and a more aggressive out-of-box feel. ICON has a deeper retail catalog, more platform support, and broader availability. King is excellent for purists. ICON is excellent for builders who want race-tier capability with a more usable street ride.
ICON shocks are designed to be rebuilt, similar to FOX. Service interval is roughly 30,000 to 50,000 miles for daily-driven trucks and after every major race for race trucks. Rebuilds typically run $150 to $350 per shock and restore damping to factory spec. ICON has a network of authorized service centers and the rebuild process is well-supported.
Warranty: ICON offers a one-year limited warranty against manufacturing defects on most retail shocks, plus a separate Delta Joint warranty for UCAs. Damage from off-road impacts, corrosion, or normal wear is not covered, but a properly maintained ICON shock will run 50,000+ miles before needing service.

Our build specialists have run ICON on Tacomas, 4Runners, Tundras, F-150s, and Broncos, and they can tell you whether you actually need HD spring tune, whether CDC is worth the upgrade, and which Stage Kit matches your build. Call us at 623-434-5277.
The number is the shock body diameter in inches. 2.5 Series is ICON's volume product for daily drivers, weekend off-roaders, and overlanders. 3.0 Series has a larger body, more oil, more heat capacity, and is engineered for sustained high-speed off-road duty, desert running, and pre-runner builds. 2.5 is the right answer for the majority of customers. 3.0 is for serious off-road only.
VS (Velocity Sensitive) is ICON's core valving technology that varies damping force based on shaft velocity. All 2.5 and 3.0 series shocks use VS valving. CDC (Compression Damping Control) is an external knob adjuster that lets you tune compression damping force without disassembly, available on most 2.5 series shocks. IB (Internal Bypass) is a multi-passage internal design that changes damping force at different shock travel positions, available on 3.0 series for serious off-road. VS is standard. CDC is the adjustable upgrade. IB is the race-tier capability.
The Delta Joint is ICON's proprietary sealed high-misalignment ball joint designed to replace the factory ball joint or uniball in upper control arms. It articulates further than a factory ball joint, lasts longer than a uniball, and requires zero maintenance. The Delta Joint solved the long-standing trade-off between ball joint comfort and uniball capability. ICON Delta Joint UCAs are the gold standard in maintenance-free upper control arms.
For daily-driven trucks with mild off-road use, ICON 2.5 VS RR rides slightly softer and more settled out of the box than FOX 2.0 Performance Series. FOX rides tighter and more performance-oriented. Both are excellent. ICON is generally the default choice for Toyota trucks (Tacoma, 4Runner, Tundra). FOX is generally the default choice for Ford trucks (F-150, Raptor, Super Duty). For Bronco and Ram, both brands have strong support and the choice comes down to feel preference and budget.
At the 2.5 tier with adjustable damping, ICON 2.5 VS RR CDC and FOX 2.5 Performance Elite DSC are extremely close. ICON has a single-knob compression adjuster, FOX has a dual-knob high-speed and low-speed adjuster. FOX has slightly more tunability. ICON has slightly better off-road feel out of the box. At the 3.0 race tier, ICON 3.0 IB and FOX 3.0 Bypass are both excellent and the choice is largely preference. ICON is more common on Toyota race builds. FOX is more common on Ford race builds. Both are race-ready.
Stage 1 is a spacer lift only, with no shock change. Stage 2 adds 2.5 VS RR front coilovers and rear shocks. Stage 3 adds Delta Joint UCAs for lifted trucks running 2 inches or more. Stage 4 adds rear leaf or coil components to balance the lift front-to-rear. Stages 6, 7, and 10 are progressively bigger lift kits with 3.0 series shocks and platform-specific add-ons. Most customers buy Stage 2 or Stage 3 depending on lift height.
ICON 2.5 VS RR with standard tune rides firmer than stock but is not harsh. Most owners describe the ride as planted, controlled, and compliant. The HD tune rides somewhat firmer than standard and feels a little stiffer empty, which is by design (HD is engineered for loaded trucks). 3.0 Series shocks are off-road-biased and will feel busy on smooth pavement. Most daily drivers run standard-tune 2.5 VS RR and find the on-road compromise excellent.
ICON shocks are designed to be rebuilt. Service interval is 30,000 to 50,000 miles for daily-driven trucks. Rebuilds run $150 to $350 per shock through ICON's authorized service network. A properly maintained ICON shock easily runs 100,000+ miles across its service life with periodic rebuilds.
Yes. Any time you change ride height by more than half an inch, camber, caster, and toe move out of spec. After installing ICON coilovers and lifting the truck, get a four-wheel alignment to bring the geometry back to factory spec. If you are running 2 inches or more of front lift, also add Delta Joint UCAs (Stage 3 or higher) and possibly a camber and caster adjustment kit to dial alignment in.
HD (Heavy Duty) is ICON's stiffer spring rate and revalved damping option for trucks carrying meaningful weight: steel bumpers, winches, roof racks, RTTs, drawer systems, sliders, etc. The HD tune prevents nose-diving and front-end sag that happens when standard-tune coilovers are loaded with accessories. If you wheel an overland-built Tacoma, 4Runner, or Bronco, HD is the right pick. If you run a stock-weight truck, standard tune is correct and HD will ride too stiff.
Yes, but the geometry benefits really show up when you also have an upgraded coilover or shock. ICON Delta Joint UCAs are designed to restore proper ball joint angle and free up droop travel on lifted trucks. You can install them on a stock-suspension truck for marginal benefit, but the ROI is much higher when paired with a Stage 2 or higher kit.
ICON shocks are valved and sized for specific lift ranges (typically 0-2", 0-3", 1.75"-3", and so on). Always buy the ICON kit that matches your actual or planned lift height. Buying a kit rated for less lift than you run will cause the shock to top out or run out of travel; buying a kit rated for more lift than you run will leave damping under-utilized.
